First check whether the website is blank in Chrome itself or whether it looks normal on screen but the saved screenshot is blank or black. Those are different problems: a blank live page calls for Chrome troubleshooting, while a blank capture calls for isolating the screenshot tool. Which method made the image—Snipping Tool, Print Screen, or a browser capture workflow?

Decide whether Chrome or the capture is failing

Reload the page and check the address. Open a second website, then compare the same page in another browser. Keep the live page visible while you test a capture method.

  • Chrome shows a blank page: troubleshoot the page, Chrome, its profile, and the connection below.
  • Chrome shows the page normally, but the saved image is blank or black: try another capture method. If that works, the problem is likely specific to the original capture workflow rather than the website’s live rendering.

If only one website fails while other sites load, the site itself may be responsible; contact its owner. If multiple pages fail, continue with the Chrome checks.

Fix a website that is blank in Chrome

Update Chrome, then restart it

Check that Chrome is up to date, exit Chrome fully, and reopen it. If the problem remains, restart Windows. Close unused tabs and other apps as well if the computer may be short on memory. Google includes updating, restarting, and freeing memory among its loading-problem checks: Chrome pages don’t load.

Compare Incognito and normal browsing

Open the affected page in an Incognito window. If it works there but not in your regular window, test extensions: disable them in the regular window, then re-enable them one at a time until the problem returns. That helps identify an extension conflict without guessing which one is responsible.

Clear browsing data if the extension test does not help

Clear relevant browsing data, such as cached files and cookies, and test the page again. Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites, so make sure you can sign back in before doing this. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance covers Incognito, extensions, and clearing browsing data: Chrome pages don’t load.

Try turning off hardware acceleration

In Chrome, open Settings > System, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, and restart Chrome. Google documents this as a troubleshooting step for suspected hardware-acceleration problems: Fix hardware acceleration issues. It is reversible: if it makes no difference, you can turn the setting back on.

Reset Chrome only if the problem continues

If the page still fails, consider resetting Chrome settings. Treat reinstalling Chrome as a later step, not the first fix: understand what local profile data you need before uninstalling. Google says information associated with a signed-in Chrome profile is saved to the Google Account, but that does not remove the need to consider local data and profile implications. See Google’s reset and reinstall guidance.

Fix a blank or black screenshot when the page is visible

Leave the website open and visible in Chrome, then capture it with a different method. For example, if Snipping Tool made the blank image, try Print Screen or a browser capture workflow. If the other method works, focus on the original capture tool; if all methods fail, revisit Chrome’s rendering checks, including the hardware-acceleration test above.

A Windows 11 Microsoft Q&A thread includes an independent advisor’s suggestion to disable Chrome or Edge hardware acceleration and restart, plus a reply suggesting a laptop restart and Snipping Tool update. These are community suggestions, not an official Microsoft technical article or a verified fix for every black capture: Microsoft Q&A: black screen when taking a screenshot.
