If a 4K video appears black in an OBS YouTube Live loop, first find out where it turns black: in the OBS preview, in an OBS recording, or only in YouTube. Those outcomes point to different parts of the setup. Confirm that OBS is using the intended local-video source, test it in a simple scene, and compare with a smaller file before changing encoder or YouTube settings. Without details such as your operating system, OBS version, video codec, and OBS log, there is no single guaranteed fix.
Find out which part of the loop is black
Before changing settings, compare the OBS preview, a local OBS recording, and the YouTube player. Also note whether the video’s audio continues. This separates a source or rendering problem inside OBS from an issue with the outgoing stream.

These comparisons narrow the diagnosis; none alone identifies a cause. Keep the OBS log and system details available if the basic tests do not resolve it.
Check the OBS source and scene first
Use a media source for a local video
If the recording is a local file, use an OBS Media Source or VLC Video Source. Confirm that the source is present in the scene, enabled and visible, and that it points to the intended file. OBS’s performance guidance identifies Media Source and VLC Source as options for local video or audio files.

Test in a simple scene
- Make a temporary scene containing the video source and only what is needed to test it.
- Temporarily remove demanding sources, filters, and animated overlays.
- Play the file and check whether it appears in the OBS preview. If possible, make a short local recording and inspect it too.
- If the simple scene works, restore the removed elements one at a time. The element whose return brings back the symptom is a useful lead.
OBS notes that sources, filters, and complex scenes consume resources. This test can reveal whether scene workload is involved, but a successful test does not by itself prove which source or filter caused the original problem.
Compare with a smaller test file
If the stream output is below 4K, or the video is being scaled down in OBS, test a lower-resolution copy of the same material. OBS recommends lower-resolution media files as a way to reduce workload when displaying the full 4K source is unnecessary. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not proof that 4K resolution caused the black screen.

Check rendering and performance load
If OBS is lagging or reporting overload, check whether other applications are using substantial GPU resources. Simplify the scene, remove costly filters for a test, or lower the output resolution or frame rate and see whether the symptom changes.
Windows: try running OBS as administrator
OBS’s performance troubleshooting guidance recommends closing OBS and reopening it with Run as administrator on Windows when performance is an issue. This is a performance troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for a black media source.

Keep playback separate from encoding
OBS generally recommends a supported hardware encoder to move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. That may help encoding performance, but changing encoders does not universally fix a black Media Source. First determine whether the video is already black in OBS preview or local recording; investigate encoder settings separately if the local output looks correct but the YouTube stream does not.
Check YouTube settings only when the outgoing stream is affected
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following H.264 bitrates for 4K/2160p streams. These are ingest recommendations for the matching stream resolution and frame rate—not minimum requirements for local video playback and not a fix for a black source in the OBS preview.

Choose the row that matches your actual output. Make sure your available upload bandwidth can support the selected bitrate, with headroom for a stable connection. YouTube recommends testing in advance with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health during the event. Its live encoder guidance also says: “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available.”

A browser or desktop capture is a different source path from loading a local file with Media Source or VLC Source. Do not assume that a fix for a local media source applies to a captured browser or desktop. Test that capture source by itself in a simple scene and compare the OBS preview, a local recording, and the YouTube player. Note which output is black and whether audio continues; those observations help identify whether the symptom begins before or after encoding.

When the black screen remains
Gather the details below before making more changes. They give OBS support or a forum helper the context needed to discuss a system-specific issue. The OBS Help portal points users to support material and forums.
- Operating system and version, OBS version, and GPU and driver.
- Whether the source is Media Source, VLC Source, browser capture, desktop capture, or another source type.
- The file container and video codec; note any HDR state if known.
- Whether audio plays, and whether the OBS preview, local recording, YouTube player, or all of them are black.
- Whether a simple scene or lower-resolution test file changes the result.
- An OBS log from the session showing the issue.
