Start by checking the encoder preview: if the prerecorded video is black there too, fix the file, scene, or source routing before changing YouTube settings. If the encoder preview and local recording show the picture but YouTube does not, inspect Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health errors and verify the outgoing video settings. This sequence helps locate the failure without assuming one cause.
Why is my YouTube live stream showing a black screen?
Picture can disappear at different points: in the prerecorded file, in the encoder’s scene or output, at YouTube ingest, or only on a viewer’s device or connection. A successful connection to YouTube does not prove that the encoder is sending video. Use the checks below to identify where the picture first goes missing.
How to diagnose and fix the black screen
1. Check the encoder preview and media source
- Open the encoder you are using and confirm the intended scene is active.
- Check that the prerecorded media source is visible in that scene and is playing. Confirm that video—not only audio—is routed to the outgoing scene.
- Check whether the encoder reports errors or unusually high CPU load. YouTube recommends inspecting the stream directly in the encoder and checking the audio and video sources routed to it.
If the preview is black, work on the source, scene, or encoder first. Confirm the file itself plays with a picture, then check that the source is enabled and visible in the active scene. Update the encoder to its latest version. Exact source controls vary by encoder and operating system.
2. Compare the encoder output with a local recording
If available, inspect a local archive or recording of the encoder output as well as its preview. If both are black, the fault is likely before YouTube ingest: the file, scene, source routing, or encoder. If the preview and archive look correct but YouTube receives no picture, move to the Live Control Room checks. YouTube notes that trying a different encoder may help when the sources and archive appear sound but the output is not.

3. Read Live Control Room’s stream-health messages
When local output looks healthy, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator and its timestamped errors. YouTube marks critical errors in red and moderate errors in yellow. Read the specific message before changing settings; the error reference covers issues such as missing video, unsupported formats, resolution or bitrate mismatches, frame-rate problems, and keyframe interval.
Correct the reported issue rather than changing unrelated settings. A codec change, for example, is not a useful first move unless the error or your encoder configuration points to a codec problem.

4. Verify the outgoing video configuration
Compare the encoder’s actual outgoing stream with YouTube’s selected ingest setup. Match the resolution and frame rate, and check that the encoder is sending a supported video stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe frequency is 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s published settings; follow the exact error message if Live Control Room identifies a specific mismatch.
5. Determine whether the problem affects one viewer or many
- One viewer sees black: the problem may be that viewer’s device or connection.
- Several viewers on the same network see black: investigate that shared network.
- Viewers on different networks report black while your encoder output looks healthy: check the encoder’s outbound internet connection. YouTube recommends testing outbound internet strength and contacting the internet service provider if the test indicates a problem.
6. Test the actual prerecorded setup before going live
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health during the broadcast. For a prerecorded stream, run the actual file through the intended scene and encoder during the test. That exercises the media source and routing that a generic test pattern would not.

Why is my YouTube stream black but I can hear audio?
Audio with no picture narrows the symptom but does not identify a single cause. Check whether the encoder preview and local archive also lack video. If they do, inspect the prerecorded file, active scene, source visibility, and video routing. If local output has picture, use the Live Control Room’s timestamped errors to check for missing video, unsupported settings, resolution mismatch, frame-rate problems, or keyframe issues. Avoid changing audio settings when the reported fault concerns video.
Why does OBS show the video but YouTube is black?
If OBS’s preview and local output show the picture, but viewers do not, first read YouTube’s stream-health message and verify the outgoing resolution, frame rate, video stream, and keyframe frequency. The preview confirms what OBS is displaying locally; it does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a valid video stream. If no relevant ingest error appears, check outbound internet strength and compare reports from viewers on different networks to help localize the issue.

Optional equipment for scheduled prerecorded playout
If you need dedicated hardware to schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live, YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream feature. That is an optional workflow, not a general black-screen repair: it will not resolve a bad source file, incorrect routing, unsupported stream settings, or a network fault. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming and Streamlabs among software encoders; their inclusion does not establish that either will fix a particular ingest problem.
