A black screen in OBS Studio can come from the wrong capture source, a game that blocks Game Capture, different GPU assignments on a laptop, or a fullscreen game that stops rendering when it loses focus. Start by identifying exactly what is black and which source you are using; no single setting fixes every case.
First identify where the image disappears
Check whether the black screen appears in the OBS preview, in a recording or live output, or only after you minimize a fullscreen game or switch to another window. Then select the affected source in OBS and note whether it is Game Capture, Window Capture, Display Capture, or a video input. These are different capture paths, so troubleshoot the one you actually use.
If the preview is black but you have not checked a recording, make a short test recording and review it. A fullscreen game may stop rendering while minimized or out of focus; OBS recommends testing the recording or keeping OBS visible on a second monitor before deciding capture has failed. Choose a capture source that matches what you want to show

For a game on Windows, try Game Capture first. For an ordinary application, choose Window Capture; to show the whole monitor, choose Display Capture. On macOS, OBS points users to macOS Screen Capture or Display Capture; on Linux, it points to Window Capture. Fix Game Capture on a Windows laptop with multiple GPUs
A laptop may have both integrated and discrete graphics. If OBS and the game are assigned to different GPUs, Game Capture may fail to capture the game. The appropriate assignment depends on the source: OBS’s GPU Selection Guide recommends High Performance for Game Capture and Window Capture, and Power Saving for Display Capture.
- Close OBS before changing its graphics assignment.
- Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Find or add OBS in the app list, open its options, and choose the setting appropriate to the capture source: High Performance for Game Capture or Window Capture; Power Saving for Display Capture.
- Reopen OBS and the game, then test the affected source again.
Do not treat one GPU preference as right for every capture type. There is also a separate Display Capture case: OBS says its newer method, available with OBS 27 or later on Windows 10 version 1903 or later, can capture a display even when OBS and the monitor use different GPUs. If automatic selection fails, try selecting the Windows 10 method manually in the source’s capture-method options. This is distinct from the Game Capture GPU-assignment advice. Work around games that block the Game Capture hook
Some games do not permit OBS to hook into them with Game Capture. OBS specifically names Destiny 2 and Counter-Strike 2 as examples and recommends trying Window Capture with the game in windowed or borderless fullscreen mode. Game behavior can vary, so apply this branch when the problem is limited to a particular game rather than assuming OBS is broken.
- In the game’s display settings, switch from exclusive fullscreen to Windowed or Borderless Fullscreen.
- In OBS, add or select a Window Capture source and choose the game’s window.
- Make a test recording while the game is visible; if the game stops drawing when it loses focus, test with OBS on a second monitor.
During diagnosis, disable overlays, FPS counters, or monitoring software that could conflict with capture, then test again. OBS also notes that some games may require running OBS as administrator; treat this as a game-specific workaround, not a universal first step. Certain DX12 games may have capture or crash issues; if the game offers DX11, OBS suggests trying that mode. Consult the current OBS troubleshooting examples for game-specific notes.

Check Display Capture compatibility and method
For the newer Windows Display Capture method described by OBS, the stated requirements are Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. If OBS’s automatic capture-method selection produces a black image, open the Display Capture source properties and try the Windows 10 method manually. The cited guidance is specific to that method and does not mean every black Display Capture screen has the same cause.

If the image is visible but choppy, or OBS reports encoding overload, that is a performance problem rather than necessarily a black-screen capture failure. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends reducing GPU demand.

- Close other GPU-heavy applications.
- Limit the game’s frame rate or use V-Sync so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
- Reduce demanding in-game graphics settings.
- Simplify the OBS scene by reducing complex sources or effects.
When to consider additional hardware
A capture card can be relevant when the target is an external HDMI device, such as a console, rather than a game or app already running on the computer. That is a separate capture setup; buying a capture card, GPU, HDMI cable, adapter, or webcam is not a general fix for a black OBS software-capture source.
