Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA black screen between lessons can come from the video source, OBS scene, YouTube ingest, or an individual viewer’s device or network. Find the first place the picture disappears before changing settings: compare OBS preview, a local recording if available, YouTube Live Control Room preview, and public playback. The exact cause depends on where the fault first appears.
Find where the picture first disappears
Check the same lesson transition at each stage. This order is a practical way to localize the problem; it is not a test sequence prescribed by YouTube.
- OBS preview: Watch the transition in the active scene. Note whether the video source vanishes, the whole scene goes black, or the preview stays normal.
- Local recording: If you have one, inspect the same moment. A black interval here as well as in OBS points toward the source or encoder path.
- YouTube Live Control Room preview: Compare it with OBS. If OBS and the local recording look normal but the YouTube preview does not, inspect the Live Control Room Health Indicator and connection.
- Public playback: Ask whether the broadcaster and multiple viewers see the problem. If only one viewer does, start with that viewer’s device or connection rather than changing the encoder.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes viewer-specific issues, shared-network problems, encoder faults, and outbound-connection problems. If several viewers on one shared network are affected, investigate that network. If viewers on different connections report the same issue, check the broadcaster’s encoder and stream health.
If the black screen appears in OBS or a local recording
First confirm that the intended scene is active and the media source is enabled and visible. Then check the source type and its end-of-playback behavior.

One lesson file: check Media Source
- Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled if the lesson is meant to repeat.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents this setting as hiding the source when the file finishes; if it is enabled, the source can disappear at the end rather than remain visible.
- Check the scene composition. A source may be hidden, covered by another source, or absent from the scene that becomes active at the boundary.
Multiple lessons: check VLC Video and playlist visibility
- For an ordered playlist, inspect the OBS VLC Video source and confirm the intended files and order.
- Check Loop Playlist if the list should restart after the last lesson.
- Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS provides behavior options that can continue, pause, or stop playback when the source is not visible. Confirm that the source stays visible through the lesson boundary.
- VLC must be installed for VLC Video to be available as an OBS source.
OBS documents looping and visibility controls, but does not promise gapless transitions between separate files. If a brief black interval occurs at every boundary after checking those settings, one possible workflow is to join the lessons into a single continuous video and play that file. Treat this as a production option, not a guaranteed fix. Before returning the 24/7 feed to production, make a local recording or short test stream long enough to capture a complete transition.
OBS’s media-source documentation is dated January 11, 2022; labels or behavior may differ in your installed version. Check the current properties in your OBS build.

If OBS looks healthy but YouTube is black or reports an error
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and read the Health Indicator message and timestamp beside the error.
- Match your fix to the reported problem. YouTube’s error guidance covers video or audio format, bitrate, audio settings, and video settings, among other stream configuration issues.
- Check the encoder’s direct output and any available local recording, then review encoder errors and CPU load.
- If the encoder output is healthy, test the outbound connection and compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s current recommendations for your selected resolution.
Do not change bitrate blindly or rely on a universal target: the appropriate setting depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload capacity the connection can sustain. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign of unstable network connectivity or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. If the evidence points to capacity, lower the video bitrate to a level your stable upload can support while observing YouTube’s limits.
If only some viewers see black video
Ask whether the broadcaster sees the fault and whether other viewers can reproduce it. YouTube’s support guidance says a problem reported by one viewer is more likely to be on that viewer’s computer or internet connection. Have an affected viewer try another device or connection, and compare with someone watching elsewhere. If reports cluster on one shared network, investigate that network. Avoid changing the encoder without broadcaster-side evidence.

Fix connection problems only when the evidence points there
A black interval that happens precisely at every lesson boundary more strongly suggests checking the source, playlist, or scene first. Network troubleshooting becomes relevant when OBS reports dropped frames, the YouTube Health Indicator identifies a connection issue, or the problem is broader than file transitions.
- Compare OBS output with the Live Control Room and local recording.
- Check encoder errors, CPU load, and upload stability.
- If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. A cable will not repair a source that disappears at the end of a file.
- If connection capacity is insufficient, adjust bitrate based on stable upload performance and YouTube’s current limits.
Choose local or cloud operation for a 24/7 stream
With OBS, a local file or playlist runs through the local encoder, so continuous operation depends on the local machine, power, and network being available. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists cloud options for continuous prerecorded streams. Its page describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for that use. Compare playlist controls, recovery behavior, output quality, storage, stream limits, and current terms directly; a different operating model does not by itself prove it will fix a particular lesson transition.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is an optional YouTube-only service for uploaded videos and playlists. Its stated workflow is: upload the lessons, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo says it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first free day with no card. These are StreamNeo’s product claims, not independently tested fixes for a specific black-screen fault. Test the lesson transitions before relying on any service for a 24/7 channel.

Common symptoms and next steps
| What you see | Likely area to check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview and recording go black at each file boundary | Media source, playlist, visibility, or scene | Check Loop, Show nothing when playback ends, Loop Playlist, Visibility Behaviour, and active scene composition. |
| OBS and local recording are normal, but YouTube preview is black | Ingest, stream configuration, or outbound connection | Read the Health Indicator message and timestamp; follow the matching error guidance. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or the issue is intermittent | Network stability or unsustainable bitrate | Check upload stability, consider wired networking, and adjust bitrate only when connection evidence supports it. |
| One viewer reports black video; others are unaffected | That viewer’s device or connection | Try a different device or connection and compare with another viewer. |
| Many viewers on the same network report it | Shared network | Compare playback from a viewer on a different connection. |
Protect the channel while troubleshooting
Use only lesson recordings you have the right to stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes copyright and stream-configuration considerations; a technically healthy stream does not establish that the content is permitted. Review YouTube’s applicable policies for the channel and material, and do not assume that prerecorded or educational content is exempt from copyright rules.
For an always-on feed, keep the stream’s purpose and programming clear to viewers. YouTube’s API documentation, updated September 14, 2026, gives a 24/7 feed as an example of one ongoing live stream alongside a separate simultaneous broadcast. That example describes an API scenario; it is not a general assurance that every channel can run unlimited concurrent broadcasts.
