Change the thumbnail on the correct broadcast in YouTube Studio: open Create → Go live, select the active stream in Live Control Room, choose Edit, replace the thumbnail in the stream details, and save. The thumbnail is stream metadata—not part of the video feed—so changing your encoder’s picture will not fix it.

Change the thumbnail on the active stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and locate the broadcast in Live Control Room. You can also check Studio’s Live content list.
  2. Confirm that you selected the currently active broadcast. YouTube distinguishes upcoming, current, and past streams; editing a scheduled stream or an old replay will not change the active one.
  3. Choose Edit for the active broadcast. In its stream details, replace the custom thumbnail and save. YouTube allows metadata edits in stream settings; the exact labels may vary by account.
  4. Check that Studio shows the saved image. Then refresh or revisit the public watch page later to see whether the new thumbnail has appeared.

You can edit the stream details while the encoder continues sending video. The thumbnail is separate from the incoming video feed, so a thumbnail change should not require changing the encoder’s image. [YouTube’s stream settings guidance; StreamNeo’s topic-specific guidance]

If the new thumbnail does not appear

Make sure you edited the right broadcast

Check the stream title and state in Live Control Room or the Live content list. A scheduled event, an active broadcast, and a past replay are separate items; changing one does not update another. YouTube’s encoder guide describes these stream states: YouTube Help: encoder streaming.

Check for reused settings

If you created the broadcast with Reuse settings, YouTube copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. That can carry over an old thumbnail. Edit the current event’s thumbnail and save it rather than assuming the previous stream’s image has been replaced automatically. [YouTube Help: stream settings]

Allow for display delay

A saved change may not show on the public watch page immediately. YouTube says, “It may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube,” but does not specify a guaranteed wait. First confirm the new image in Studio, then check the public page again later. [YouTube Help: custom thumbnails]

Check the image if upload fails

YouTube’s general video-thumbnail guidance recommends JPG or PNG, a 16:9 aspect ratio, 3840 × 2160 pixels where possible, and a minimum width of 640 pixels. It lists upload limits of 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails and 50 MB for desktop video thumbnails. These are general video-thumbnail guidelines; if the live-stream upload control in your account shows different requirements, follow that control. [YouTube Help: custom thumbnails]

When to troubleshoot the encoder instead

If the video feed itself is wrong, missing, or unhealthy—not just the thumbnail—check Live Control Room’s stream health and error information. It reports ingestion and encoder issues such as unsupported format, incorrect bitrate, and invalid audio or video settings. Those checks address the incoming stream; they do not replace editing thumbnail metadata. [YouTube Help: troubleshoot live streaming]

Keep the thumbnail accurate

Choose artwork that represents what viewers will actually find in the stream. YouTube’s thumbnail policy prohibits images that mislead viewers into expecting content that is not in the video. For a 24/7 story or ambience stream, make the thumbnail consistent with the stream’s real format and content. [YouTube Help: thumbnail policy]

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps streaming with your computer off; it does not go live from a camera. This is an alternative for running the broadcast, not a fix for a mismatched YouTube thumbnail: edit thumbnail metadata in YouTube Studio as described above.
