For wheelchair-accessible public transit directions, open a destination’s directions in Google Maps, choose Transit, then select Options → Wheelchair accessible under Routes. Google documents this filter on desktop and Android. It filters transit itineraries; it does not certify every part of a journey or destination.
Filter transit routes for wheelchair accessibility
The setting appears within transit directions, not driving directions. Google’s desktop and Android instructions follow the same sequence, with slightly different actions and labels.

Route filtering and place accessibility are different
The route filter narrows transit itineraries. Place information describes accessibility attributes reported for a particular destination. Depending on the place and available information, those attributes can include entrances, seating, restrooms, and parking; Google’s Android help also lists elevators. Neither function establishes that every part of a venue or journey will meet a traveler’s needs.
Show accessibility information for places on Android
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then App & display.
- Turn on Emphasize accessibility info.
- Search for a place and open a result marked with the wheelchair icon to view its accessibility summary.
Google says wheelchair-accessible place information is available only in certain countries; its current Android help does not name them. A wheelchair icon or a listed attribute is useful information, not proof that all amenities or routes through the venue are accessible. See Google’s Android accessibility instructions and its 2020 Accessible Places announcement.

If you cannot find the option
Google introduced wheelchair-accessible transit routing in 2018 and said it would work with additional transit agencies to expand it. The official instructions do not provide a current global list of supported cities or a country-by-country coverage table. If the option is absent, the available information does not establish that a setting is broken; the feature may not be available for that trip or the relevant agency data may be missing. Google’s 2018 announcement describes the introduction and expansion plans.
Google’s 2020 announcement said Accessible Places was beginning to roll out in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with more countries planned. That is a historical rollout statement, not a current complete availability list. The current Android help still says place accessibility information is available only in certain countries.
Confirm live station conditions
A route marked accessible cannot guarantee that an elevator is working now or that temporary disruptions have been reflected. When an elevator or other facility is essential to your trip, check the transit operator’s current service information. For example, SEPTA advises riders to check real-time station elevator status and points to its trip-planning feature for elevator status; use the operator serving your own route. What about wheelchair-accessible walking directions?
Google’s 2023 accessibility roundup describes a wheelchair-accessible toggle under walking route options for stair-free directions. However, the current Google Help pages cited above document the transit filter but do not give equivalent current steps or a coverage statement for wheelchair-accessible walking routes. If you see a walking option, check the current app interface in your location and verify that the route suits your needs. See Google’s 2023 accessibility roundup.
