To find what’s making an ASUS laptop slow, check what is happening while the slowdown occurs: Task Manager can reveal busy apps and CPU, memory, or disk pressure; Windows Storage can show whether free space is low; and MyASUS System Diagnosis can test supported hardware. Work through those checks before changing settings, buying an upgrade, or resetting Windows—the right cause depends on when and how the laptop slows down.
First, pin down when the laptop is slow
“Slow” can mean a delayed startup, apps that take a long time to open, lag while several programs are running, or sluggishness only during a game or video call. It can also mean that web pages load slowly while the rest of the computer responds normally; that points toward an internet connection or browser issue rather than necessarily a slow laptop.
- Does the whole computer respond slowly, or only one app or web pages?
- Does the problem happen at startup, all the time, or only during sustained work such as gaming or video calls?
- Did it begin after a Windows update, new app, connected peripheral, or change in workload?
Disconnect optional peripherals and see whether anything changes. ASUS includes this check in its Windows 10/11 slow-system troubleshooting guidance. If the slowdown is limited to one app, note that before investigating the whole system.
Use Task Manager to see what is busy
Task Manager is the quickest way to replace guesses with observations. Microsoft recommends monitoring CPU, memory, and disk use to identify processes that may be slowing a PC; ASUS also advises checking background programs, updates, scans, and downloads.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Reproduce the slowdown—for example, open the slow app or repeat the activity that causes lag.
- On Processes, look for apps or processes using substantial CPU, memory, or disk while the problem is happening.
- Open Performance to view CPU, memory, and disk activity. Note which resource is under pressure and when.
- Open Startup apps to review what launches with Windows. Disable only items you recognize and do not need to start automatically.
If you recognize an app that is using resources and are not using it, close the app normally and see whether responsiveness improves. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes: they may be needed by Windows or another program. If Windows Update, a scan, or a download is active, let it finish and check again rather than treating a temporary workload as a persistent fault. Microsoft’s Windows performance tips explain the same resource checks.
Check updates and free storage
Let Windows Update finish
Open Windows Update in Settings and check whether an update is downloading or installing. Allow active work to complete; restart if Windows requests it, then test the laptop again. An update in progress can temporarily add background activity.

Review available space safely
Low free storage can contribute to poor performance. In Windows Settings, open System > Storage to review space use and temporary files. Storage Sense can help remove appropriate temporary files, but do not delete arbitrary folders or files just to free space. ASUS identifies insufficient disk space as a possible cause of a slowdown.
Run MyASUS System Diagnosis if your model supports it
Search the Start menu for MyASUS, open the app, and look for System Diagnosis. If available, run the slow-system scenario or checks relevant to the symptom, such as memory, disk, application usage, fan, or boot. Review any reported error and follow the troubleshooting suggestions shown by ASUS.

MyASUS offers hardware and customized checks, but System Diagnosis is not available on every device. ASUS also notes that a Microsoft Store installation may expose only some features if the device lacks a suitable ASUS System Control Interface driver or supported version. A missing diagnosis tab is therefore an availability limitation, not evidence that the laptop has failed. See ASUS’s MyASUS System Diagnosis guidance and its slow-system troubleshooting page.
Check for software, malware, heat, and driver issues
Scan for malware if resource use is unexplained
Malware can consume CPU or disk resources. If Task Manager shows unexplained activity or the slowdown began after installing software, run a scan through Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. ASUS cautions that some free software can be bundled with malware; that does not mean free apps in general are unsafe.

Look for a heat-related pattern
If the laptop slows mainly during sustained, demanding work and its fans are unusually active or the chassis feels very hot, check for blocked airflow and fan problems. ASUS says high device temperatures can reduce performance. Its overheating and fan guidance is relevant to this symptom; a stand or cooling pad is worth considering only if heat or airflow is implicated, not as a general fix for slowness.
Update through the applicable official channel
Keep Windows and drivers current, and use ASUS’s official model-specific instructions for ASUS updates. Do not treat a BIOS update as a casual first troubleshooting step: check the exact model instructions and follow them carefully. An update is more useful when it addresses a relevant compatibility or stability issue than when applied without a diagnosis.

Use a clean boot to test for app or service interference
If basic checks do not explain persistent slowness, a Windows clean boot can help determine whether a startup app or non-Microsoft service is interfering. It temporarily disables services and startup apps, so some functionality may be unavailable while testing. This procedure is best for personal devices; managed work devices may be restricted by network policy. Microsoft warns that advanced boot-option changes can make a computer unusable, so follow its instructions rather than improvising.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your Windows version, including hiding Microsoft services before disabling other services.
- Restart and check whether the slowdown remains. If it disappears, a disabled app or service may be involved.
- Re-enable items systematically, restarting and testing between changes, until the slowdown returns; the last group re-enabled helps narrow down the conflict.
- When finished, return Windows to Normal Startup and re-enable the items you disabled.
Decide whether to escalate, repair, or upgrade
If MyASUS reports a hardware error, follow its recommendation or contact ASUS support for the model-specific repair path. If software troubleshooting fails, ASUS lists options such as using a restore point or resetting Windows. Back up personal files before a reset.
Consider a memory or storage upgrade only after identifying the bottleneck and checking the exact ASUS model and configuration; not every laptop can be upgraded. Microsoft notes that software adjustments may not significantly improve older hardware. Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14, according to Microsoft’s performance guidance; that is a support-status consideration, not proof that Windows itself is causing a slowdown.
