Use the exchanges’ live corporate-action tables, then verify every date and condition in the issuer’s exchange filing before you buy. On NSE, open Corporate Filings → Corporate Actions to see the security symbol, purpose and ex-date. If the final date is missing, search Corporate Announcements and open the issuer’s attachment. Confirm the record date, book closure, entitlement or payment details in the issuer notice, and use BSE’s corporate-actions page as a second check when appropriate.
What a corporate action is and why the exchange record matters
A corporate action is an event that changes shareholders’ cash entitlement, number of shares, face value or participation rights. Common examples are dividends, bonus issues, stock splits, rights issues and shareholder meetings. An exchange table is useful because it puts the issuer’s event into a standardized, searchable record. It is not, however, a substitute for the issuer’s filing: the attachment normally contains the ratio, amount, issue price, entitlement rules and payment or allotment mechanics.
Dates can change between an initial announcement and the final exchange row. A board-meeting notice may say that a dividend or split will be considered; it does not prove that the action was approved or that you are eligible. Treat the final ex-date and record date in the confirmed corporate-action notice as the dates that control your decision.
The quickest NSE workflow
- Open NSE’s Corporate Filings page. Select the Corporate Actions table. The main table exposes the security symbol, the purpose of the action and the ex-date.
- Search by company or symbol. Narrow the results to the issuer you own or are considering. Filter the purpose, such as dividend, bonus, rights, split or another action, when the interface provides that option.
- Open the issuer-specific corporate-action record. The issuer’s Corporate Filings—Corporate Actions view can show purpose, face value, ex-date, record date and book-closure dates. Read the complete row rather than relying on a headline or calendar entry.
- Follow the filing when a date is incomplete. If an action is announced but the table does not yet show a final ex-date, move to NSE’s Corporate Announcements interface. Search by company or symbol, subject and date range.
- Open the announcement and its attachment. The attachment is the place to verify the dividend amount, bonus or split ratio, rights price and entitlement, record date, payment date, allotment date and any conditions. NSE’s announcements interface also supports CSV download for your own tracking.
- Cross-check the issuer archive. NSE’s investor-relations corporate-actions archive lists the purpose, announcement date, record date and attachments. The archive displayed an update date of 3 September 2026; because the pages are live, check the displayed date and filing again when you use it.
- Refresh before acting. Re-open the exchange row immediately before placing a trade. A company can revise a record date or publish a replacement notice after the first announcement.

How to use BSE for confirmation
Check BSE’s corporate-actions information when the security is listed on BSE or when you want an independent exchange-side confirmation. Search for the security and compare the action purpose, ex-date and record date with the NSE entry. If the two pages differ, do not guess which date applies. Open the latest issuer notice and any revised exchange filing, then confirm with your broker or the exchange’s current record before trading.

BSE’s explainer uses the same practical distinction as NSE: the cum-dividend date is the last purchase date for dividend eligibility, while the ex/record date is when the share price reflects the distribution. The issuer notice remains the authority for payment, allotment and special conditions.
Ex-date, cum-date, record date and payment date
The terms describe different points in the timetable. Never infer eligibility from the announcement date alone.

“Ex-Dividend Date … On this day the price of the equity share of the Company gets adjusted for the dividend pay out.” — NSE definition
A dividend and a split can both have an ex-date, but they do different things. A dividend distributes cash; a split changes the number of shares and the face value while keeping the company’s overall value conceptually apportioned across more units. Read the purpose and face-value fields instead of interpreting the ex-date in isolation.
What to check for each action type
Dividend
- Confirm whether it is interim or final and the amount per share in the issuer attachment.
- Record the ex-date, record date and payment date separately.
- Use the cum-dividend definition and the final exchange timetable to determine the purchase deadline; do not rely on the announcement date.
- Check whether a revised notice changes the amount, record date or payment schedule.
Bonus issue
- Find the approved bonus ratio and the existing share class covered by it.
- Verify the ex-date, record date and allotment or credit date.
- Read the attachment for treatment of fractional entitlements, if any, and the point at which the new shares become available.
Face-value split
- Compare the old and new face value shown in the corporate-action record.
- Confirm the ex-date and record date, then read the attachment for the credit or allotment timetable.
- Do not confuse a face-value split with a bonus issue: the purpose, ratio and accounting treatment are different even if both increase the number of share units.
Rights issue
- Verify the rights ratio, issue price, entitlement date, opening and closing dates and the procedure for applying.
- Check whether renunciation, oversubscription or payment-in-installments rules are stated in the attachment.
- Do not assume that owning the stock automatically results in fully paid new shares; the filing will state the action required.
AGM and other actions
- For an AGM, read the meeting date, record date and voting or participation instructions.
- For mergers, schemes or other actions, rely on the detailed circular and the specific conditions rather than a short table description.
- Keep the primary attachment with your records because later notices can replace earlier summaries.
Notice periods under NSE Regulation 42
NSE’s current Regulation 42 compliance guidance says a listed entity must give the stock exchanges advance notice of at least three working days for a record date for dividend, bonus and rights actions. The calculation excludes the date of intimation and the record date itself. The notice must specify the purpose of the record date.

The same guidance states that schemes of arrangement require at least seven working days’ notice. These are minimum notice requirements, not a promise that an action cannot be amended. A replacement filing can alter the timetable, so always use the latest exchange and issuer documents.

Notice that the dividend rows and split rows carry ex-dates but require different follow-up questions. For dividends, the missing facts are usually the amount and payment timetable. For splits, the critical facts are the old and new face values and when the additional units will be credited.

A pre-purchase verification checklist
- Correct security: Match the symbol, company name and listing exchange.
- Final purpose: Confirm that the row says dividend, bonus, rights, split or another completed action—not merely a board meeting.
- Latest notice: Look for a revised announcement or replacement attachment.
- Dates: Write down announcement, ex-date, record date and payment or allotment date separately.
- Eligibility: Use the final ex-date and record-date rules; never infer eligibility from when the headline appeared.
- Terms: Read the ratio, amount, face value, issue price and application requirements in the attachment.
- Cross-check: Compare NSE and BSE where both list the security, then resolve discrepancies through the latest issuer filing.
- Timestamp: Note when you accessed the page because live rows can change.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Buying because a board meeting was announced
A board meeting is an intention to consider or approve an action. Wait for the decision, the exchange filing and the final dates.
Using the announcement date as the eligibility date
The announcement starts your search; it does not identify the last eligible purchase date. Locate the final ex-date and record date.

Third-party calendars can become stale. Re-open NSE or BSE and the issuer attachment close to the trade, and record the access time.

Ignoring the attachment
A short table may omit the ratio, issue price, payment method or allotment conditions. Download or retain the primary attachment before making a decision.
Assuming every ex-date has the same effect
The purpose determines the consequence. A dividend changes cash entitlement; a split changes unit count and face value; a rights issue requires an election and payment under stated terms.
Failing to investigate conflicting dates
Do not average or choose the earlier date. Search the announcements interface for a revised filing, inspect the latest attachment and verify the final row on the relevant exchange.

For several holdings, download the NSE announcement results as CSV and maintain a simple log with symbol, purpose, announcement date, ex-date, record date, payment or allotment date, attachment name and the time you last checked it. Update the log whenever an exchange row or issuer attachment changes. This creates an audit trail without treating a static spreadsheet as more authoritative than the live exchange page.
Before each trade, repeat the short path: Corporate Filings → Corporate Actions, issuer detail, latest announcement attachment, then BSE confirmation when relevant. That sequence separates discovery from verification and reduces the risk of acting on an early or superseded notice.
