To find a GST rate, first classify the actual supply in the GST Portal’s Search HSN Code tool, then verify the matching entry in the current CBIC GST rate schedule and any applicable rate notification. Search suggestions identify possible HSN (goods) or SAC/service-classification codes; they do not, by themselves, prove that a code or rate applies to your transaction.
What HSN and SAC codes do in a GST rate lookup
HSN is the Harmonized System of Nomenclature classification used for goods. For services, GSTN uses a service classification code commonly referred to as SAC. The classification identifies what is supplied; the GST rate comes from the corresponding entry in the CBIC schedule, read together with its description, conditions, exclusions and later notifications.
| What you are supplying | Code path | What must be matched |
|---|---|---|
| Goods, such as a manufactured, traded or imported product | HSN search | The complete code and the schedule description, including material, form, use and any stated thresholds or conditions |
| Services, such as consulting, repair, transport or software-related work | Service classification/SAC search | The service activity and the exact schedule entry, including exemptions, recipient conditions and place-of-supply implications where relevant |
A familiar product name is not always a tariff description. A catalog label such as “fabric,” “equipment” or “maintenance” can cover several classifications with different rates. Treat the code search as the discovery step and the CBIC schedule as the rate-verification step.

- For services, the activity delivered: the work performed, deliverables, contract scope and whether it is a standalone service or part of a bundle.
- Transaction context: who receives the supply, where it is supplied and whether a special exemption or concessional condition may apply.
Do not choose a code solely because it appears in an older invoice, a supplier’s master data or a marketplace listing. Those records can be useful leads, but your classification must describe the supply you are making now.
Step-by-step: use the GST Portal Search HSN Code tool
1. Open the official search facility
On the GST Portal, go to Home > Services > User services > Search HSN Code. GSTN states that the facility is available both before and after login, so you can use it for an initial classification check without first opening a return or invoice screen.
2. Choose code search or description search
Choose the HSN search option when you already have a candidate code. Choose description search when the code is unknown. In description search, identify whether the supply is Goods or Services, then enter a trade, commercial or technical description.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use more than one search phrase when the first wording is too broad. Try the name used by customers, the technical term used in specifications and a description of the item’s principal function. For a service, describe the activity and result rather than only the industry you work in; “security monitoring service,” for example, is more useful than a general label such as “security business.”
3. Review every suggested code-description pair
The tool may return nearby descriptions or possible codes. Open the details and compare each candidate with the actual supply. Check the wording, not just the first few words of the result. A near match can differ in composition, intended use, processing, presentation or service scope.

Record the candidate code, the complete description displayed by the portal and the facts that support your choice. Keeping that record gives your accounts team a traceable reason for the classification and makes later review easier if the schedule changes.
4. Confirm that goods and services are not being mixed
Use the goods path for a physical product and the service-classification path for a service. If a contract includes both, analyze the components and then determine whether GST treatment requires them to be treated separately or as a composite or mixed supply. Do not force a service into an HSN result simply because the supplier’s software labels every item “HSN.”
5. Do not treat a suggestion as an automatic ruling
GSTN describes the revamped search as a way to suggest possible descriptions or codes. It does not make the portal result a determination that your classification is correct for every fact pattern. Where two entries remain plausible, compare the full schedule language and obtain a professional view before invoicing a material or recurring transaction.
How to select the right result when descriptions are similar
Compare the schedule language with the physical or contractual facts
Write down the facts that make your item different from neighboring entries. For goods, this may be material, composition, processing, intended use, technical specification or weight. For services, it may be the actual activity, the deliverable, the customer’s role, or whether the work is an intermediary, transport, leasing, repair or professional service.
Common trade language and tariff language do not always align. GSTN introduced commercial and trade-description searching because matching everyday descriptions to technical classifications can be difficult. That feature helps you find candidates; it does not remove the need to read the detailed description.

Use product attributes only when the classification makes them relevant
CBIC’s rate FAQ uses sarees to illustrate why attributes matter: classification can vary with the constituent fibre, and cotton sarees are further distinguished by fabric weight. The practical lesson is to capture the attributes that the applicable entry actually names. Do not assume that every product is classified by fibre or weight, and do not generalize the saree example to unrelated goods.
Check the complete code
Do not create a shorter code by deleting the last two digits of an eight-digit HSN. GSTN has warned that truncation can produce a six-digit number that is not itself a valid tariff entry. If your accounting system stores a shorter value, verify the complete code and description in the official directory or search result before using it for reporting.
Verify the GST rate in the CBIC schedule
1. Open the relevant goods or services schedule
After selecting a candidate classification, locate the corresponding CBIC GST rate schedule for goods or services. Search by the complete code and read the row’s description from beginning to end. The rate cell is not enough: the same broad category can have separate entries, exclusions or conditional rates.
2. Read conditions, exceptions and explanatory language
Check every footnote, condition and exception attached to the entry. A concessional rate may depend on the product’s composition, packaging, recipient, end use, documentation or another fact. An exemption may apply only to a specified service or circumstance. If the schedule refers to a notification, open the current Central Tax (Rate) or Integrated Tax (Rate) notification index and check later amendments.
3. Confirm the schedule is current for the transaction date
Rates can change through notifications. For a live invoice, verify the entry and any amendment that applies on the date of supply rather than relying on a downloaded chart, an old invoice or a search result captured months earlier. Keep a copy or internal reference to the schedule entry and notification used in your decision.

4. Separate classification from other GST questions
Finding a rate does not settle every GST issue. You may still need to determine whether a supply is exempt, whether a reverse-charge rule applies, how a bundled supply is treated, or which place-of-supply and tax type rules apply. The HSN or SAC lookup answers the classification-and-rate question only when the complete entry and its conditions fit the transaction.
| Verification question | What a satisfactory answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Does the code describe the actual supply? | The complete code and detailed wording match the product’s attributes or the service contract. |
| Is it the goods or services schedule? | The classification is in the correct HSN or service-code section. |
| Is there a conditional rate? | Every condition and exception in the entry has been tested against the transaction facts. |
| Could a later notification apply? | The current CBIC rate notification index and amendments have been checked for the supply date. |
| Is the code complete? | The value has not been made by simply truncating an eight-digit code. |
Apply the result to invoices and returns
Put the verified classification on the invoice
Use the complete, verified HSN for goods or SAC/service classification for services in the invoice fields required for your transaction and reporting configuration. The description on the invoice should be consistent with the classification; an unexplained mismatch between a code and the item name can create questions during reconciliation or review.
Use the same decision in your outward-supply workflow
GST Portal guidance for outward supplies and GSTR-1 uses HSN/SAC information in the relevant reporting workflow. Map the verified code to the correct product or service master, tax rate and unit settings in your billing system, then check that the value flows correctly into the return. A correct lookup can still produce an incorrect return if the accounting master retains an old code or rate.
Maintain an evidence file
For recurring supplies, retain the product specification or service agreement, the portal search result, the CBIC schedule entry, any notification relied on and the date of review. If composition, packaging, contract scope or another relevant attribute changes, repeat the classification check instead of copying the old result.
Goods and services: practical differences
Goods
Start with the physical characteristics and tariff description. Ask what the item is, what it is made of, how it is processed and whether the schedule distinguishes its form or use. A product sold under one brand or model name can still fall into different entries when its composition or presentation changes.

Services
Describe the activity actually supplied, not merely the customer’s industry or the name of your department. Read the service entry and its conditions together. Contracts that include software access, implementation, support, training, equipment or other elements may need a component-by-component analysis before you decide whether one classification covers the supply.
Bundled transactions
When goods and services are supplied together, list the components, identify the principal supply and examine the composite- or mixed-supply rules that apply to the facts. A single invoice line called “package” is not a substitute for that analysis. If the treatment materially affects tax, obtain advice based on the contract and actual delivery model.
Common problems and how to fix them
| Problem | Why it happens | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| No result for the product name | The portal may use technical or tariff wording different from the marketplace or trade name. | Search the material, function, processing and technical description separately; then compare the returned descriptions with specifications. |
| Several nearby codes appear | The item may differ by composition, use, form, weight or another attribute. | List the distinguishing facts and read the full schedule entries and conditions before selecting one. |
| A supplier gave a code that does not fit | The supplier may classify a different version, use an old schedule or have entered a truncated value. | Re-run the search for your own supply and verify the complete code against the CBIC schedule. |
| The rate on an old invoice differs from the current schedule | A notification may have changed the rate or condition. | Check the notification effective for the date of supply and update the item master with a documented effective date. |
| Goods and services are mixed in the system | Some billing software uses one generic field for both. | Configure separate goods and service classification fields and test the outward-supply export before filing. |
| A code was shortened to six digits | Someone removed the last two digits of an eight-digit code for convenience. | Return to the official search or directory and store the complete valid code and description. |
| The entry has a condition you cannot prove | The rate depends on documentation, composition, recipient or another fact not captured in the file. | Collect the missing evidence or use the standard applicable treatment only after professional review of the transaction. |
When a professional classification review is warranted
Escalate instead of guessing when:
- two or more tariff entries remain plausible after reading the full descriptions;
- the rate difference is significant or the supply is high-value or recurring;
- the product is a new formulation, kit, composite item or unusual presentation;
- a contract combines goods, software, installation, support or other services;
- an exemption, concessional rate or reverse-charge condition may apply;
- the code or rate changed during the period covered by your invoices; or
- you cannot demonstrate the condition attached to the rate you want to use.
Give the adviser the specifications, photographs or technical sheets where relevant, contract and invoice wording, recipient and delivery facts, candidate codes, schedule entries and the supply dates. A conclusion based on those facts is more reliable than asking for a rate against a short product nickname.
A repeatable internal control for GST classification
- Create a classification record for each new product or service with its commercial and technical descriptions.
- Search the GST Portal in the correct goods or services mode and save the complete candidate code-description pair.
- Compare the candidate with the actual composition, processing, presentation, contract scope and other attributes named in the schedule.
- Check the CBIC rate schedule, conditions, exceptions and relevant rate notifications for the supply date.
- Have a second reviewer approve ambiguous or high-impact classifications.
- Map the approved code and rate to the invoice and GSTR-1 master data.
- Set a review trigger for changes in product formulation, packaging, service scope, law or rate notifications.
This process keeps the portal’s search function in its proper role: it finds likely classifications, while the schedule and transaction facts support the rate used in compliance.
Quick checklist before issuing an invoice
- Is the supply correctly identified as goods or services?
- Did you search by both the familiar description and the technical description when necessary?
- Does the complete code’s detailed wording match the actual item or service?
- Did you check composition, processing, presentation, weight or other attributes that the entry distinguishes?
- Did you read every condition, exception and explanatory note?
- Did you check current CBIC rate notifications for the supply date?
- Did you avoid creating a six-digit code by truncating an eight-digit code?
- Does the invoice and outward-supply master use the same verified classification and rate?
- Is there a written explanation and supporting evidence for an ambiguous or conditional classification?
What the lookup can and cannot establish
The GST Portal search can help you discover a likely HSN or SAC from a known code or description. It cannot decide, without reference to your facts, whether a near-match is legally correct or whether a conditional entry applies. The CBIC schedule and current notifications provide the authoritative rate framework, but the final answer remains dependent on the exact product or service, its attributes, transaction structure and date. If those facts are not known, there is no responsible single rate to quote.
