You do not need to wait for a major Steam event to buy a game cheaply. Add the game to your Steam Wishlist, enable email or mobile alerts, and then verify every alert against SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal. Buy only when the same edition, regional total and included content meet a price threshold you chose in advance.
Why a wishlist alert is better than watching the Steam store
Steam discounts appear outside the large seasonal promotions. Steam’s Wishlist Notifications can alert you when a wishlisted game is discounted as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal or Weekend Deal. That makes the Wishlist a useful first line of defense against missing a short promotion between major events.
An alert is not proof that a price is exceptional. The percentage shown on the store page is calculated from the game’s current reference price, while your real question is whether today’s regional total is good compared with that game’s own history. A 30% reduction can be excellent for one title and ordinary for another. Treat the alert as a signal to investigate, not as an instruction to purchase.

The reliable process has three stages:
- Use Steam to catch a discount.
- Use price-history tools to establish context.
- Compare identical editions and contents, then apply your personal buy threshold.
Step 1: Configure Steam Wishlist notifications
Add games you may actually buy
Open a game’s store page in Steam and select Add to your Wishlist. Include games you would buy at a realistic price, not every title that looks interesting. A focused list makes email and mobile alerts useful instead of noisy. Remove games that no longer interest you or that you already own through another edition or bundle.

Enable both notification channels
In Steam’s account and notification settings, allow Wishlist notifications by email and in the Steam mobile app. Steam describes these alerts as notices sent by email or through its mobile app when a Wishlist game enters a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal or Weekend Deal.
Notification delivery depends on Steam’s current promotion rules. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says promotional notifications require all of the following conditions:

| Discount of at least 20% | The promotion must be “any type of discount at or above 20%.” A smaller reduction may not trigger the promotional notification. |
| Duration longer than eight hours | The discount must run for over eight hours, so very short price changes may not generate an alert. |
| Verified email | Your Steam account must have a verified email address for email delivery. |
| Permission enabled | Wishlist and promotional notification permissions must be turned on in your account settings. |
| Cooldown for the same app | Valve documents a one-to-two-week cooldown before another Wishlist email for the same game can be sent. |
These rules explain why an alert may not arrive for every visible reduction. They also mean that a notification can arrive after a game has already been discounted elsewhere or after a shorter promotion has ended. Keep your own checks active rather than relying on one message.
Step 2: Record the deal before comparing it
When an alert arrives, open the game’s Steam page and write down the details that determine its value. Prices, regional availability and promotion end times can change while you are comparing stores.
- Your region and currency: Record the price shown to your account, including any taxes or other charges displayed at checkout.
- Edition: Note whether the offer is Standard, Deluxe, Complete or another package.
- Included content: List the base game, season passes, expansions and cosmetic or soundtrack items included.
- Promotion end time: Capture the date and time shown by Steam, including the time zone if it is displayed.
- Ownership status: Check whether you already own the base game or any downloadable content that the offer contains.
Saving these details prevents a common mistake: comparing a discounted Deluxe package with the historical price of the Standard edition, or comparing a bundle that contains content you already own with a clean purchase of the missing items.
Step 3: Check the price history in SteamDB
Open the game’s history page
Search for the title in SteamDB and open its price-history view. SteamDB records price changes in real time; its documentation says a publisher price change or discount is detected and recorded within minutes. The page provides a price graph, a lowest recorded price and previous discounts.

Use the graph to answer four questions:
- How close is the current regional price to the recorded low?
- How often has this edition reached a similar price?
- How long has it been since the last comparable discount?
- Does the current offer cover the same edition and downloadable content as the low shown on the chart?
Do not read the lowest number in isolation. A historical low may belong to a different region, an introductory promotion, an edition that is no longer sold or a bundle with different contents. Confirm the currency, package and date attached to the low before treating it as a benchmark.

SteamDB can filter current discounts, bundles and Wishlist items. You can watch individual games or import a Steam Wishlist, allowing the tracker to focus on titles you might purchase. These tools are useful when Steam’s own notification cooldown prevents another email or when you want to monitor several editions of one game.
A price graph is evidence, not a promise that the same low will return. Use it to set a ceiling for your decision: for example, you might require the current total to be at or near the recorded low, or decide that a slightly higher price is acceptable only when the edition includes expansions you would otherwise buy.
Step 4: Cross-check with IsThereAnyDeal
Review the broader price history
Open the same game in IsThereAnyDeal and review its price history and reviews. The service lists prices from authorized stores, which helps you distinguish a legitimate activation offer from an unverified listing. Compare the exact package rather than relying on the game’s name alone.
Create a Waitlist rule
IsThereAnyDeal’s Waitlist can notify you when a game goes on sale, apply custom notification rules and import a Steam Wishlist. A rule can reflect your own threshold instead of notifying you for every percentage-off badge. For example, set an alert around a price you have already decided is fair, then leave it active until the game reaches that level.
Importing your Steam Wishlist avoids maintaining two lists manually. After importing, review the entries: remove titles you no longer want and check that the service matched the correct edition or package.

Compare like-for-like offers
The cheapest displayed number is meaningful only when the offers are equivalent. Use this comparison grid before purchasing outside Steam or choosing a different package.

When an offer is not identical, calculate the cost of obtaining the missing content instead of comparing headline prices. Keep a note of the final total you would actually pay, not just the advertised amount.
Set a personal buy threshold
A threshold turns price tracking into a decision rather than an endless search for a perfect low. Choose it before the next alert, when the discount badge is not influencing you. Your threshold can be a fixed currency amount, a percentage of the game’s regular regional price or a rule tied to the historical low.

A practical rule has two tests:
- Value test: The current total must be at or below the amount you believe the game is worth to you.
- Evidence test: The price should be close to a recorded low or be justified by additional content that was not included at that low.
If both tests pass and the edition is correct, buying now is rational. If only the value test passes, decide whether you are comfortable paying above the historical benchmark for immediate access. If neither passes, leave the alert active and wait.
Account for time and play plans
A low price is not savings if the game remains unplayed. Before buying, ask whether you expect to start it before the next likely discount and whether you would choose it over games already in your library. This is a personal opportunity-cost check, not a claim that any particular discount guarantees a saving.
When a bundle is actually cheaper
SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal can expose bundles that are easy to miss from an individual game page. A bundle can beat the price of one game when it contains several items you genuinely intend to own. It is not automatically better when it includes duplicates or extras you would never use.

Check bundle overlap
- List the games and DLC already in your library.
- List every item in the proposed bundle.
- Identify the remaining items you would otherwise buy.
- Compare the bundle’s final regional total with the cost of those remaining items separately.
- Confirm how the store handles ownership and whether the bundle price adjusts for items you already own.
Do not count a nominal discount for duplicated content as money saved. Evaluate only the content that changes what you will be able to play.
How to handle discounts between major events
Daily Deals, Midweek Deals and Weekend Deals can appear outside the large seasonal campaigns. Because these promotions may be shorter or may trigger only one Wishlist email during the documented cooldown, combine Steam alerts with the tracker watchlists described above.
When a short promotion appears, capture its end time first. Then check the historical graph and the equivalent package. If the promotion ends before you finish comparing, do not let urgency replace verification; a missed purchase is preferable to buying the wrong region, edition or seller.

A large percentage that is not a low price
The percentage-off badge is a starting signal. Compare the current total with the recorded low and with previous discounts for the same package. Do not infer that a 50% reduction is the best price the game has offered.
A historical low from another package
Price charts can contain multiple editions and bundles. Match the package identifier or the exact edition name before using a low as your target.

Third-party pages may show prices for currencies or regions different from yours. Confirm the amount in your own Steam account and verify that any external key can be activated in your region.

A notification that does not arrive
Check the 20% minimum, the requirement for a discount longer than eight hours, your verified email and notification permissions. Remember that Valve documents a one-to-two-week cooldown for another Wishlist email for the same app. Use a SteamDB watch or IsThereAnyDeal Waitlist rule as a second monitoring channel.
A bundle padded with unwanted content
Calculate the value of the items you would actually play. A bundle’s advertised percentage does not account for duplicates or games you would never install.
An unfamiliar seller
Use authorized-store listings where available and confirm activation region, DRM and refund terms. A lower number is not a better deal if the license cannot be activated or supported on your account.

A repeatable deal-check workflow
Use this sequence every time an alert arrives:
- Open Steam: Confirm the current regional price, edition, included content and sale end time.
- Capture the baseline: Note the total you would pay and any DLC or bundle overlap with your library.
- Check SteamDB: Inspect the price graph, lowest recorded price, prior comparable discounts and available bundles. Use its Wishlist or watch filters if you want continued monitoring.
- Check IsThereAnyDeal: Review price history, reviews, authorized-store offers and your Waitlist rules. Confirm that an imported Wishlist entry matches the intended package.
- Normalize the comparison: Compare the same edition and DLC contents, in your region, with activation and DRM requirements included.
- Apply your threshold: Buy only if the final total satisfies your value and evidence tests and the seller’s terms are acceptable.
- Otherwise wait: Keep Steam notifications, a SteamDB watch or an IsThereAnyDeal Waitlist rule active.
Maintain your tracking system
Price tracking works best when your lists stay accurate. Once a month, remove games you no longer want, verify that notification permissions remain enabled and review any Waitlist rules that produce too many alerts. When you buy a game, remove it from active monitoring unless you are tracking a specific expansion or complete edition.
For games with several packages, create separate notes for the base game, Deluxe edition and complete bundle. This avoids treating a low for one package as evidence about another. Keep the date and region beside every recorded low because prices and availability are volatile.
What “best discount” means in practice
The best discount is not necessarily the largest percentage or the lowest number ever displayed. It is the lowest acceptable total for the exact content you want, in your region, from a seller whose activation and refund terms you accept, purchased when you are ready to play. Steam Wishlist alerts provide timely opportunities; SteamDB supplies rapid change detection and historical context; IsThereAnyDeal adds authorized-store comparisons and customizable Waitlist alerts. Your threshold is what turns those signals into a sound purchase decision.
