Start with your country’s or region’s official climate or environment agency, then check your local government’s hazard and resilience information. Compare sources by the hazards covered, location scale, time period and data behind the map. A climate-risk map is useful for screening—not, by itself, a definitive assessment of a specific home or site.

Start by defining the location and decision

“My area” could mean a neighborhood, municipality, county, watershed or wider region. Choose the scale that fits your question, and identify what you need the information for: health, a home purchase, a business, infrastructure or community planning. A dataset made for a broad region may not resolve conditions on one property.

Next, list the hazards and assets that matter. Possible hazards include flooding, drought, landslides, wildfire, high winds and extreme heat. Consider which people, buildings, services or ecosystems could be affected. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit describes exposure as the presence of people, assets or ecosystems in places where hazards could harm them, and offers an exposure-matrix exercise for pairing assets with potential hazards.

Use official sources, starting locally

Look first for a location-based portal from your national or regional climate or environment agency, then consult local-government hazard, emergency-management and resilience pages. Local authorities may provide maps, plans or guidance that reflect local geography and planning rules. There is no single portal that covers every country or answers every hazard question.

For U.S. readers, the Climate Mapping for Resilience and Adaptation (CMRA) Assessment Tool is a starting point for climate data and projections in selected geographies. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit Help Desk describes it as a good place to start for U.S. local data. CMRA presents downscaled global climate-model results for selected geographies and projected changes in the severity and frequency of five common climate-related hazards through this century. Its geographic coverage and model-based projections are not a parcel-level finding.

The Toolkit also points U.S. readers to federal resources with different purposes, including FEMA’s National Risk Index and Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool, NOAA coastal resources, Heat.gov, Wildfire Risk to Communities, State Climate Summaries and Climate Explorer. Use the tool that matches the question rather than treating these resources as interchangeable.

Keep historical evidence, current conditions and projections separate

These time horizons answer different questions:

  • Historical events and records: What hazards have occurred, and what evidence is available about past conditions?
  • Recent trends and near-term conditions: What changes have been observed, and what conditions are relevant in the nearer term?
  • Future projections: How might hazards change over coming decades under the assumptions and scenarios used by the source?

A long-term climate projection is not a weather forecast or an emergency warning. For an immediate threat, use local weather forecasts and emergency alerts. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit’s guidance on understanding exposure distinguishes historical, near-term and future hazard questions.

Check what a map or score actually measures

  • Publisher and update date: Identify the responsible agency and when the page, map or underlying data was updated.
  • Geographic resolution: Check whether the result is for a broad region, a local area or a finer unit—and whether that scale can support your decision.
  • Hazard definition: Find out what the source counts as flooding, extreme heat, wildfire or another hazard.
  • Time period and baseline: Distinguish historical records from future projections and check which baseline and future period are compared.
  • Scenario, model and dataset: Read how future results were produced and what assumptions they use.
  • Type of result: Determine whether it shows a hazard, exposure, vulnerability or a combined risk measure. A hazard map does not automatically establish who or what is exposed, or how vulnerable they are.
  • Intended use and limitations: Check whether the resource is for public screening, emergency response or technical planning, and what its publisher says it cannot determine.

A clear map or score is not necessarily a precise one. For example, CMRA’s downscaled model results are projections for selected geographies; they should not be read as a guarantee of future conditions at an individual address.

Choose a hazard-specific source for a focused question

For U.S. questions, the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit lists different federal resources for different hazards and contexts. Check each tool’s documentation for its geographic coverage, data and limits.

Know when a map is not enough

Public portals can help identify issues to investigate, but a consequential decision may require local technical evidence. For a property transaction, development proposal, infrastructure project or safety decision, ask the relevant local authority what assessment applies; consult a qualified practitioner when the available data or its interpretation is insufficient.

Local rules can depend on details that a broad map does not settle. In England, for example, Environment Agency flood guidance applies to England and takes account of factors including catchment, flood zone, development vulnerability, lifetime and selected climate allowance. Its planning thresholds and methods should not be applied in other jurisdictions; readers should follow the requirements that govern their own location.

New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment provides a local climate-risk assessment guide and coastal hazards and climate change guidance. The 2024 coastal guidance states: “This guidance does not describe what will or won’t happen with climate change or sea-level rise in any specific area.” That is a useful reminder that a framework can guide assessment without predicting a particular place’s outcome.

A practical reliability check before you act

  1. Write down the location scale and the decision you are making.
  2. Find the official national or regional source and the relevant local authority’s information.
  3. List the hazards and assets that matter to that decision.
  4. Compare historical evidence, current or near-term information and future projections as separate kinds of evidence.
  5. Record the source’s date, resolution, hazard definition, period, scenario and model or dataset.
  6. Use a hazard-specific official resource where one is available, and read its limitations.
  7. Ask local authorities or a qualified local practitioner for a site-specific assessment when the decision is too important or detailed for public screening maps.
