The reliable way to find hands-on indie demos is to plan from the event organizer’s own exhibitor showroom, not from a general convention map. Filter for an Indie Game Area or country pavilion, record each studio’s booth code, plot those codes on the official floor map, then verify public-day access, dates and the latest schedule just before you travel. Tokyo Game Show and Gamescom expose different amounts of information in advance, so your route should account for queues, trade-only hours and showcases that may reveal demos not obvious in the directory.

Start with the organizer’s exhibitor showroom

International shows contain hundreds or thousands of stands, and a booth that sounds independent may be filed under a national pavilion, a platform area or a project label instead of the word “indie.” The organizer’s searchable showroom is therefore your primary index. It has the current edition’s exhibitor names, categories and, where published, booth locations. Fan-made lists and old social posts can point to the wrong hall or an earlier build.

Open the showroom before booking travel. Search the event’s own filters for Indie Game Area, independent, country pavilion, national pavilion and any named indie project. Save the page for each promising studio rather than copying only the game title: the studio record is the item most likely to contain a booth code, pavilion name, platform information or a note that the exhibit is online only.

Tokyo Game Show’s official showroom demonstrates why this matters. Its 2024 Indie Game Area directory grouped an international set of studios and pavilions, including Chile, India, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Games from Spain. Each listing was tied to a booth location, with codes such as 09-W65 and 10-W02. Those codes are more useful for navigation than a country name alone because they identify a position in the venue’s grid.

Separate physical exhibits from online exhibits

Do not assume that every showroom result is playable in the hall. The TGS showroom explicitly separates real in-person exhibits from online exhibits and also exposes links for the Indie Game Project, official streaming and a Steam special venue. A game listed online may be downloadable or streamable without having a station at the convention. Mark each result as physical, online or unclear while you plan; only the first category belongs on a booth route unless the event later confirms otherwise.

Capture the fields that affect a visit

For every candidate, record the following in a spreadsheet or note:

  • Studio and game name exactly as listed.
  • Indie area, country pavilion or other exhibit-area label.
  • Hall, booth code and pavilion name.
  • Whether the listing describes a playable demo, a trailer, merchandise, a talk or an online exhibit.
  • Public-day or business-day eligibility, if stated.
  • Platform or input requirements, such as PC, console, keyboard, controller or touch.
  • Any time-limited presentation, appointment or queue instruction.

This record prevents a common mistake: spending a morning crossing the venue for a studio that is present only in a livestream or whose playable build is reserved for a trade session.

Turn booth codes into a practical route

Once you have a shortlist, open the organizer’s official floor map. The TGS showroom links its floor map and exhibitor search alongside public-day and business-day ticketing, overseas visitor support, official streaming, its online exhibit and the Steam special venue. Use the map rather than relying on a screenshot from a previous edition, because halls and booth assignments can change.

  1. Copy each booth code exactly. Preserve letters, numbers and hyphens; 09-W65 and 10-W02 are distinct locations, not alternate formatting for one stand.
  2. Identify the hall or zone. Place all candidates in hall order before optimizing the walking sequence. A short distance on paper can still mean a security checkpoint, escalator or separate entrance.
  3. Group by pavilion. National pavilions often cluster multiple studios, allowing you to sample several games without another cross-hall trip.
  4. Mark high-priority demos. Give the first pass to games with a confirmed playable build and limited opening hours. Put trailers, merchandise and “coming soon” listings in a lower-priority loop.
  5. Add queue and meal buffers. A route that touches every booth with no waiting time is not a usable schedule. Reserve at least one unassigned block in each half-day for queues, talks or a demo that runs long.
  6. Export an offline copy. Save the map image, booth list and venue name on your phone. Hall Wi-Fi and mobile service can become unreliable when the show is crowded.

Use a two-pass route

On arrival, make a fast reconnaissance pass through the indie and pavilion zones. Confirm that the booth exists, check queue signs and note any age, language or appointment restrictions. On the second pass, spend your available time at the strongest demos. This is more resilient than committing to a minute-by-minute itinerary before seeing actual queue lengths.

Check dates, ticket types and who can enter

International shows commonly divide trade or media access from public admission. A booth may be staffed and playable during a business session but unavailable to a general visitor until the public opening. Read the organizer’s ticket page for the specific edition and day you will attend; do not infer access from a press article or a previous year’s calendar.

Gamescom 2025 illustrates the split: the event ran from August 20 through August 24, 2025, with a trade and media opening on August 20 and public admission beginning August 21. Gamescom is held at Koelnmesse in Cologne and opens to the public for multiple days. Visitors can try upcoming PC, Xbox and PlayStation games before release, but the exact stations and session rules still depend on the exhibitor.

TGS’s showroom exposes both public-day and business-day ticketing and an overseas visitor-support area. Use those official resources to determine whether your ticket covers the day on which a target pavilion is operating. Check opening and closing times, age rules, bag checks, re-entry policy and whether a separate reservation is needed for a stage or appointment. If you are crossing borders, confirm the venue city, local transit and entry requirements independently of the game list.

Choose the right day for your goal

  • Trade or media day: better for quieter conversations and appointments, but not necessarily available to the public and not a guarantee that every indie booth has a playable build.
  • First public day: useful for catching opening showcases while still offering several days to return if queues are long.
  • Later public days: often provide more scheduling flexibility, but a popular demo may have a longer queue or limited daily capacity.

The correct choice depends on whether you value access to staff and presentations or the broadest public-program availability. Treat the organizer’s current ticket labels as authoritative for that edition.

Read the schedule for indie programming and broadcasts

Exhibitor search tells you where a studio is; the event schedule tells you when a game may be shown outside the booth. Look for indie showcases, first-look sessions, developer talks and official broadcasts before finalizing your route. A stage appearance can reveal a title that is not clearly tagged in the directory, and a broadcast may let you preview a game while you wait in another queue.

Gamescom’s 2025 schedule listed Gamescom Awesome Indies on August 21. The program described first-look gameplay and independent developers, studios and publishers. The same schedule included Xbox broadcasts from the show floor and Future Games Show streams. Put these events on your calendar with travel time to the stage or viewing area; a presentation in another hall can make a tightly packed booth route impossible.

For TGS, use the showroom’s links to official streaming and the Indie Game Project in parallel with your in-person plan. Streaming is not a substitute for a confirmed physical station, but it can expose announcements, gameplay footage or interviews that help you decide which booth deserves a return visit.

Tokyo Game Show: finding indie pavilions efficiently

What the directory can tell you

The 2024 TGS Indie Game Area directory is organized around studios and pavilion groups rather than a single global “best indie games” list. Its international mix included Chile, India, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Games from Spain. Because each entry is tied to a booth location, you can build a country-pavilion loop and still retain studio-level precision.

Start by filtering to the Indie Game Area, then open each pavilion group and capture every booth code that has a physical exhibit. If a listing points to an online exhibit, place it in a separate digital queue. The distinction is especially important when a country’s physical presence is smaller than its online catalog.

Build a TGS visit plan

  1. Open the current TGS exhibitor showroom and select the Indie Game Area or relevant pavilion filters.
  2. Record booth codes, then locate them on the current official floor map.
  3. Place the densest pavilion cluster in your first route block so you can sample several games before queues grow.
  4. Check the public-day or business-day ticket page that matches your badge.
  5. Review overseas visitor support if you are traveling internationally, and save the official streaming and online-exhibit links as fallback options.
  6. Recheck the list and map shortly before departure for changed assignments or participating studios.

Do not carry the 2024 directory forward as if it were a permanent layout. It is evidence of how the event labels indie and country exhibits, not a promise that the same studios, games or booth numbers will appear in another edition.

Gamescom: finding playable indie games at Koelnmesse

Use both the hall plan and the program

Gamescom’s Cologne venue is large enough that a floor map alone cannot identify every worthwhile indie demo. Combine the exhibitor directory with the event schedule. Filter for independent studios, publisher or country-pavilion labels, then cross-check those names against Gamescom Awesome Indies and other official show-floor broadcasts.

Because Gamescom is public for multiple days, you can distribute priorities: reserve the first public day for the most time-sensitive showcases and use later days for booths that need a second queue attempt. If you have trade or media access on the opening day, confirm whether a target stand is operating for that audience rather than assuming a public station is already active.

Account for platform and build differences

Gamescom promotes opportunities to try upcoming PC, Xbox and PlayStation games before release. “Playable” does not mean the same build or controls are available at every station. Ask the attendant which platform you are using, whether the demo is a short guided slice or free exploration, and whether progress carries between stations. Note the build or demo title in your records so you do not mistake a stage presentation for a public hands-on version.

Tokyo Game Show and Gamescom compared

The most useful comparison is operational: how much planning information each organizer publishes and how predictable a hands-on visit will be.

Comparison point Tokyo Game Show Gamescom Planning implication
Indie and pavilion discovery The official 2024 Indie Game Area directory lists studios and pavilion groups from multiple countries with booth codes. Use exhibitor categories together with the public program, including Gamescom Awesome Indies in 2025. Search both the area filter and national-pavilion labels; do not rely on the word “indie” alone.
Booth-level mapping The showroom links an official floor map and exhibitor search; examples include 09-W65 and 10-W02. Plan from the current Koelnmesse floor information and the organizer’s exhibitor listings. Copy codes into a route and save an offline map.
Access model The showroom exposes public-day and business-day tickets plus overseas visitor support. In 2025, trade/media access opened August 20 and public admission began August 21; public days continued through August 24. Match your ticket to the day a booth or showcase is available.
Advance demo information Listings distinguish in-person exhibits from online exhibits and connect to streaming, the Indie Game Project and a Steam special venue. The schedule can reveal first-look gameplay and broadcasts, but the exhibitor record remains the authority for a physical station. Keep physical, online and schedule-only items in separate route categories.
Scale indicators TechRadar reported 772 exhibitors, including 299 international exhibitors, across 4,083 booths at TGS 2025, citing the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) 2025. The supplied Gamescom evidence establishes a large public event at Koelnmesse but does not provide a comparable booth total. Treat the TGS figures as 2025 edition statistics, not a standing capacity or forecast.

What to do at the booth

Confirm that the demo is genuinely hands-on

A display can show a trailer, a developer walkthrough or a prerecorded build while the booth is labeled as an exhibit. Ask a staff member whether visitors can control the game, how long a session lasts and whether a queue ticket is required. If the station is occupied by a presentation, ask when public play resumes instead of waiting without an estimate.

Record useful information without slowing the queue

  • Write down the exact game title, studio and platform.
  • Note whether the build is a demo, vertical slice, beta or online trial.
  • Ask about language options and accessibility settings before starting.
  • Photograph signage only when permitted; avoid recording people or unreleased material against booth rules.
  • After playing, add a one-sentence note about what you experienced while the details are fresh.

Handle queues strategically

Use a long queue for a high-priority game while a companion checks nearby pavilions or a scheduled stream. If you are alone, choose one queue at a time and set a reminder for your next stage event. Return later rather than blocking the route when a booth reports that its daily capacity is full.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When the directory or map does not match reality

The booth code is missing

Search the studio name without the game title, then search the pavilion label. A publisher or national group may own the listing. If no physical location appears, treat the entry as online or unconfirmed and ask the information desk at the venue.

The booth moved

Use the latest map and check signs at the hall entrance. Edition-specific reassignment is possible; do not navigate from a cached screenshot. Update your route immediately so a stale code does not consume a session block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game is listed but not playable

Reclassify it as a trailer, talk, appointment-only demo or online exhibit. Look for a scheduled presentation or official stream instead of assuming the booth is malfunctioning. A listing can remain accurate about an exhibitor while saying nothing about public hands-on access.

You have the wrong access day

Check the ticket label and the event’s public-versus-business calendar. If a target is trade-only, move it to an eligible day or use the official stream and online venue. Do not attempt to enter a restricted session with a public ticket.

Queues exceed your schedule

Protect the few items that are both confirmed playable and hard to replace. Drop low-priority trailers first, then use indie showcases and broadcasts to cover titles you cannot reach physically. Keep a second route block for the following day when your ticket permits a return.

Plan for international travel and accessibility

Venue planning is part of demo planning. Confirm the city and venue name on the official event page, then map entrances, transit and the hall containing your first pavilion. TGS’s overseas visitor support is designed for international attendees; consult it for the edition you will attend rather than relying on a generic travel post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the organizer’s accessibility information, queue seating, elevator locations and restroom access before arrival. At the booth, ask for captions, subtitles, alternate controls or a seated station when available. Requirements vary by studio, so an area-level indie label cannot guarantee a particular accommodation.

Carry a charged phone and an offline copy of your route. A small power bank can be useful for maps and ticket QR codes, but it is ancillary equipment; the essential information remains the organizer’s directory, map, schedule and access rules.

Edition-specific scale and why it changes your strategy

TechRadar reported that Tokyo Game Show 2025 had 772 exhibitors, including 299 international exhibitors, spread across 4,083 booths, citing CESA’s 2025 figures. Those numbers describe that edition only. They explain why an unfiltered walk through the venue is inefficient, but they should not be treated as a permanent event capacity or as a forecast for a future show.

For any edition, compare the organizer’s published detail on four axes: clarity of indie and pavilion filters, availability of a downloadable or viewable booth-level map, public versus trade access and ticket complexity, and how much hands-on information is available before arrival rather than reserved for live showcases. A show that publishes fewer demo details requires more schedule watching and more flexibility on site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
