To find out why a YouTube live stream process stopped on Ubuntu, identify how it was launched, then compare its application and supervisor logs with kernel messages and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health notices. The YouTube player going offline does not, by itself, show whether the encoder exited or YouTube stopped receiving usable content.
Start by preserving the incident details
Before restarting the encoder or rotating logs, record the approximate time the stream disappeared, the time zone, the Ubuntu release, the encoder name and version, and whether the host rebooted. Use the same time zone when comparing records; convert timestamps if necessary. If the incident is ongoing, capture the relevant logs before taking actions that might obscure them.
Find the logs for the way the process was started
First establish whether the encoder ran as a systemd service, in a user session, in a container, under another supervisor, or directly from an interactive terminal. Each has a different likely log destination. A system-wide service journal is useful only if that unit managed the encoder.
For a systemd service
Replace <unit> and the example incident window with the actual unit and time range:

systemctl status <unit>
sudo journalctl -u <unit> --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pager
Look for the last application output, an exit status or signal, a restart count, and messages from systemd about stopping or restarting the unit. Ubuntu documents service-specific inspection with journalctl -u, for example for LXD services: Ubuntu Server: LXD containers — Troubleshooting.
For a shell, container, or other supervisor
- If you launched the encoder from a shell, inspect that terminal or the output destination configured by the command or launcher.
- If the process ran in a container, check the container runtime’s logs as well as any service that launched it.
- If another supervisor managed it, inspect that supervisor’s records for the incident window.
Do not treat an empty service journal as proof that the process produced no error if systemd did not manage it.
Check kernel and host events
Kernel records can help explain a process termination that the encoder log does not. Inspect the incident window rather than relying only on the latest messages:

sudo dmesg -T | tail -n 250
sudo journalctl -k --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pager
Search around the failure time for memory pressure or out-of-memory (OOM) events, device resets, kernel errors, and security denials. Ubuntu describes dmesg as displaying the kernel ring buffer and notes that access is restricted by default to privileged users with CAP_SYSLOG on Ubuntu 20.10 and later: Ubuntu: Kernel protections — dmesg restrictions.
Check for AppArmor denials
AppArmor denial records can appear in dmesg and other logs that collect kernel messages. They may include the operation, profile, requested path or name, and process ID or command. Ubuntu cautions that explicit AppArmor deny rules do not produce a log entry, so the absence of a denial message does not conclusively rule out policy involvement. See Ubuntu Server: AppArmor — Checking and debugging denies.
Account for Ubuntu edition and release
Ubuntu 22.04 release notes state that systemd-oomd shipped by default on Ubuntu Desktop to help avoid overload before the kernel OOM killer acts, and mention oomctl for checking OOMD status. This is specific to that release and edition; do not assume the same setup on every Ubuntu installation. See the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release notes.

Compare the local records with YouTube’s stream health
Open the relevant stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its stream-health messages around the time in question. YouTube says these messages include timestamps and distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow errors: YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages. Compare each message’s time with the encoder output and Ubuntu logs.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. An ingestion or format error while the encoder is still running points toward the stream output, format, or delivery path; it does not by itself explain why a local Ubuntu process exited.
Determine whether the process stopped or delivery failed
Use the records together rather than treating the offline player as a diagnosis:

- Compact, Connected Design: Includes a 2TB M.2 SSD, 10GbE LAN, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C connectivity, and HDMI 2.1b.
- Local process exited: Look for the encoder’s exit status or signal, final application output, and any corresponding supervisor event.
- Host or resource event: Match kernel messages, OOM evidence, device errors, or security records to the same time.
- Process still running, stream unhealthy: Investigate encoder output and the network path; YouTube may have stopped receiving usable content even though the local process remains alive.
- Explicit stop or shutdown: A recorded operator action, systemd stop, or scheduled shutdown may look different in local logs from a crash, abrupt signal, resource termination, or host reboot.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a stream by stopping content from the encoder and say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That platform behavior does not identify the local cause; use the local exit and supervisor records to establish whether the process was stopped. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Investigate connectivity if the encoder is still alive
If the process continues running but YouTube stopped receiving a usable stream, check outbound upload capacity, packet loss or interruptions, and network changes near the incident. YouTube advises keeping the total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth, recommends 20% headroom, and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream: YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
Compare the total stream bitrate with the connection’s available upload bandwidth, not its advertised download speed. The 20% headroom is YouTube’s operational recommendation, not a guarantee against every network interruption.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What to conclude when the logs are incomplete
A definitive diagnosis requires the launch method or unit name, incident timestamp and time zone, relevant application or supervisor records, and nearby kernel messages. Ubuntu release and encoder version can matter for release-specific defaults and application errors. If logs were not retained, rotated, or written to an unknown destination, the original cause may remain unresolved; report what the records establish and distinguish it from what they cannot establish.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep looping, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a camera encoder. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
