Visiting rules depend on the facility and its corrections agency; a prison being open to in-person visits does not mean every visitor is cleared to enter.
Find the person’s current facility first
Start by confirming where the person is currently incarcerated and whether the prison is federal, state, or local. Transfers can make an old facility page irrelevant, and there is no single U.S. status page covering every prison.
For state or local custody, USAGov directs visitors to the relevant state or local corrections department. For federal custody, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) inmate locator and visit guidance. USAGov’s inmate locator guidance was last updated November 17, 2025; BOP visiting guidance applies to federal institutions.
Check the prison’s current in-person visiting status
Open the corrections agency’s official facility page and look for “visiting,” “visitation,” or “family visitors.” Check for an explicit in-person status, recent facility notices, and any linked policy or schedule. Some agencies publish facility-level status pages; for example, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) visitor information includes in-person status and facility-specific exceptions with update times. Its entries are specific to California institutions, not a nationwide schedule.

Distinguish an ongoing policy from a temporary operational notice. A facility may generally allow visits but suspend or change them temporarily. Check the status page again near the date you plan to go.
Confirm that you are approved to visit
Facility status and individual visitor clearance are separate checks. For federal custody, BOP says visitors must be cleared and placed on the incarcerated person’s approved visiting list. State and local agencies set their own requirements, so do not assume the federal process applies elsewhere.

Read the schedule and facility rules
“Visiting allowed” does not tell you when or how you can visit. Read the facility’s current rules and schedule for details that may affect whether you can enter:

- Whether you need an appointment or reservation, and how to make one.
- Which days and hours apply, including any schedule differences by housing unit.
- When visitor processing closes; arriving during posted visiting hours may not be enough.
- What identification you must bring, what clothing is permitted, and which items are allowed inside.
BOP’s general guidance directs visitors to each institution’s specific visiting regulations. Its facility pages may show typical hours that do not apply in every case, so check the institution’s own regulations rather than relying on a general listing. BOP institution pages provide facility information and links to local rules.
Check whether visitation is open today or canceled
For a same-day or imminent visit, check the facility’s official status and notices again, then call the facility if the status, schedule, or your eligibility is unclear. A warden can restrict or cancel federal visits, and schedules can change: the Rhode Island Department of Corrections advises visitors to verify requirements and schedules before each visit. RIDOC visiting information is an example of a state agency’s guidance, not a rule for other jurisdictions.
When you call, ask whether in-person visits are operating on your intended date, whether your scheduled visit is affected, and whether any facility-specific rule or approval issue could prevent entry. Do not rely on an old notice or a general visiting-hours listing when travel is at stake.

Government guidance can help you find the right authority, but the facility’s current instructions govern the practical details of a visit. Do not apply one state’s schedule or BOP procedures to a different jurisdiction.
