The reliable answer comes from the game’s publisher, not a generic “cross-platform” label. Write down every player’s exact hardware and storefront, check the publisher’s current support page for that specific platform pairing, edition, and mode, then verify the game’s cross-play setting and account or friend-invite requirements. A directory can help you discover candidates, but the publisher’s current documentation is the final authority.
Cross-play can change after patches, platform releases, policy changes, or mode updates. Record the date you checked and test the actual invite or matchmaking path before planning a session.
What cross-play actually means
Cross-play (also called cross-platform multiplayer) allows players using different supported platforms to join the same multiplayer session or matchmaking pool. The game’s servers, account system, platform pairing, edition, and sometimes the selected mode all have to support the connection.
“Different platform” can mean several things: a PlayStation console with a PC, an Xbox console with a Nintendo Switch, or a mobile device with another mobile device. It does not mean that every combination works. A game may support PlayStation–PC play but exclude Nintendo Switch, or allow cross-play in public matchmaking while restricting a particular mode.

A store badge or a third-party list is therefore only an indication. The current publisher support page, FAQ, or store listing for the exact game and version is the authoritative check.
Use this verification workflow
Follow these steps in order. They separate a general claim that a game is “cross-platform” from the pairing you actually need.
- Record each player’s exact setup. Note the console or device generation and the storefront. Examples include PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, iOS, and Android. “PC” alone may be too broad because different PC storefronts can use different account or entitlement systems.
- Search the publisher’s documentation. On the publisher’s support site, FAQ, or official store page, search for cross-play, cross-platform multiplayer, and the named pairing, such as “PlayStation and PC.” Look for a current date, version note, or platform list.
- Use a maintained directory for discovery. Steam’s Cross-Platform Play curator can help you find a title and inspect groupings such as PlayStation and PC, Xbox and PC, Nintendo Switch, or mobile. Treat the entry as a lead: directories can lag behind patches and policy changes.
- Check the exact edition and mode. Confirm whether the information applies to your edition, live version, test branch, or legacy release. Then check whether the feature covers public matchmaking, private sessions, ranked play, co-op, or the specific mode you intend to use.
- Inspect the game’s settings. Find the multiplayer or gameplay menu and look for a cross-play or cross-platform-play switch. The control must be enabled on the players’ systems if the game requires it.
- Check account and friend requirements. Some games require each player to link an account with the publisher’s service. Friends may need to be added through an in-game or cross-platform friends list rather than the console’s native list.
- Test the real connection. Send a private invite, search for the other player by the game’s account name, or join a controlled session. This verifies the complete workflow instead of assuming that a platform label guarantees every mode.
Start with the exact platform pair
Write the pairing as a two-sided statement before searching. For example, “PS5 with Steam,” “Xbox Series with Nintendo Switch,” or “Android with iOS.” Include the storefront on PC and the console generation where relevant.

Where to look for authoritative information
Publisher support page or FAQ
Search the publisher’s own support domain first. Useful terms include “cross-play,” “cross-platform multiplayer,” “supported platforms,” and the two platform names. Read the surrounding conditions, not just the headline. A support article may specify a minimum version, a mode limitation, an account-linking step, or a date when the information was updated.
Official store listing
The game’s store page can list supported platforms and online features. Use it to confirm the edition and storefront, then compare its wording with the publisher’s support documentation. A platform icon or badge does not establish that every pair can play together.

Maintained directories
Steam’s Cross-Platform Play curator is useful for discovery and for viewing platform groupings. It is not a substitute for current publisher documentation. Entries can become stale after patches, server migrations, platform releases, or policy changes, so verify the specific pairing elsewhere and note when you checked.

Confirm the edition and game mode
Cross-play is negotiated by the game’s online backend and the version running on each player’s device. The following situations can produce a “yes” in one context and a “no” in another:
- A live release supports cross-play while a test branch or legacy version uses separate servers.
- Public matchmaking is shared, but a special mode or event is not.
- A platform is listed as supported, but only for selected modes.
- Cross-play works between two platform groups but not a third group.
- A patch has changed the supported pairings or required account service.
Look for explicit wording about the mode you plan to play. If the documentation says only “online multiplayer,” do not infer that ranked, private, local, or every co-op mode is included.
Turn on the in-game setting
After the documentation confirms the pairing, inspect the game itself. Menu names vary, but the switch is commonly under Settings, Gameplay, Multiplayer, or Online.
Rocket League example
The official instructions provide a concrete path: Select Settings from the Main Menu, select the Gameplay tab, and check the Cross-Platform Play box. If the option is unavailable, check that the game is updated and that the account or platform restrictions described by the publisher do not apply.

Some games require the option to be enabled for every participant. Have each player open the relevant menu and confirm the current value before sending an invite. A disabled option can prevent matchmaking or limit the available modes even when the servers support the pairing.

Understand the effect of disabling it
In Fortnite, Epic Player Support warns: “If crossplay is disabled, some game modes may only work in Solo mode.” This illustrates why a missing match is not always evidence that the platform pairing is unsupported; a local setting can change which queues are available.
Check accounts, friends, and invitations
Platform compatibility is only one part of a working session. The game may use a publisher account or cross-platform identity to connect players who are not on the same console network.
Account linking
Read the game’s sign-in and account-linking instructions. Confirm that each player is signed in to the required service and that the account is linked to the correct platform profile. Do not create a second account casually: progress, entitlements, or friend lists may be attached to the original identity.

Many games require an in-game friend search rather than a native console friend list. Use the other player’s exact game account name or identifier, accept the friend request, and check that the person appears online in the game’s own roster.
Invites and joinability
Epic Online Services describes a cross-play system as including the ability to “authenticate players, streamline friend management, and provide game invite and joinability functionality” across supported platforms. In practical terms, a game can support the servers yet still require its own invite flow. Send the invitation from the game’s social menu and use the recipient’s in-game notification or join command.
Verify with a controlled private session
A private test avoids confusing a full public queue with a compatibility problem.

- Update both installations to the same current live release.
- Sign in to the required publisher accounts.
- Enable cross-play in each player’s settings.
- Add the other player through the game’s cross-platform friends list.
- Create a private lobby or party in the intended mode.
- Send the in-game invite and have the other player accept it.
- Start the session and confirm that both players can join, communicate, and load into the same match.
If the private test works but public matchmaking does not, investigate queue rules, region selection, input restrictions, or mode availability rather than immediately concluding that cross-play is absent.
What to compare when several games or pairings are possible
When choosing between titles, record the same facts for each one. A simple comparison makes hidden restrictions visible.

Use “not stated” when official documentation does not answer one of these questions. Absence of a statement is not proof that the feature exists.

Cross-play versus cross-progression or cross-save
Cross-play concerns who can join the same multiplayer session. Cross-progression or cross-save concerns whether characters, unlocks, settings, or saves carry between platforms. A game can provide one without the other, so check progression separately.
Cross-play versus cross-buy or play-anywhere
Cross-buy or a play-anywhere entitlement concerns whether one purchase grants access on more than one storefront or platform. It does not prove that players on those platforms share multiplayer servers.

PS4 with PS5, or Xbox One with Xbox Series, is a cross-generation question. It may be handled differently from PlayStation with PC or Xbox with Nintendo Switch. Confirm both the generation pairing and the broader platform pairing.

Accessories cannot create server support
A controller adapter, headset, cable, or other accessory can change how a player interacts with a device, but it cannot make game servers accept an unsupported platform pairing. Compatibility is determined by the game and its online services.
Interpret official wording correctly
Specific wording is more useful than a broad marketing phrase. For example, Epic Player Support states: “Players on Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam can randomly matchmake with or against each other in all Online Match types.” That statement identifies the platforms and the scope—random matchmaking in all Online Match types—for the service described. It should not automatically be extended to private lobbies, another edition, or a different title.
When a page says “supports cross-play,” look for the details that qualify it: the named platforms, whether the claim applies to matchmaking or invitations, the modes included, and any account or setting requirement. If the page names only a platform family, continue searching for the exact generation and storefront.

The other player cannot be found
- Confirm that both players are using the game’s account names, not merely console usernames.
- Check that both accounts are linked to the required publisher service.
- Verify that each player has accepted the in-game friend request.
- Recheck privacy, parental-control, and communication settings that can block friend search or invitations.
The cross-play switch is missing
- Update the game to the current live version.
- Look under Gameplay, Multiplayer, Online, or Social settings rather than only the main account menu.
- Check whether the platform, edition, or region has a documented restriction.
- Search the publisher’s support page for a recent change to the control’s location or name.
Matchmaking works but a private invite fails
- Confirm that the private mode is included in the official cross-play statement.
- Use the game’s own party or invite command instead of the console’s native invite.
- Check that both players are on the same live patch and have the same required downloadable content.
- Test a different supported mode to separate a mode restriction from a general account problem.
One mode is unavailable
Check whether cross-play was disabled locally. Epic’s Fortnite support notes that disabling it can leave some modes available only in Solo mode. If the setting is enabled, read the publisher’s mode-specific documentation and check whether the queue separates players by input method or platform group.
A directory disagrees with the publisher
Prefer the current publisher support page and record the date of the check. A directory entry may not reflect a recent patch, platform release, server change, or policy update.
Keep a dated compatibility record
For a regular group, save a short note with the game title, edition, platform pair, modes confirmed, account requirement, setting path, and date checked. Revisit it after a major patch or when a new console generation or storefront is added. This is especially useful when a game has separate legacy and current editions or when different players use multiple PC storefronts.
A useful record might read: “Game title — PS5 and Steam — public matchmaking and private lobby confirmed — publisher account and in-game friends list required — cross-play enabled in Settings > Gameplay — checked on [date].” Keep any variable date or account notation inside your own notes; the important point is to preserve the exact conditions that were tested.
