Check the game’s official store page for your exact platform and country, then verify that the purchase button works, your edition is licensed for that account, required patches and DLC are available, and the online services still operate. A page that opens in a browser is not proof that new sales are allowed, and a game that can be bought may still have discontinued multiplayer features.
The reliable answer is therefore specific to an edition, platform, region, account and date. Follow the checks below before paying, or before assuming a previously purchased copy can still be downloaded and played.
What “available” actually means
Availability has several separate tests. Treating them as one yes-or-no question causes most mistakes.

- Available to buy: the official storefront accepts a new purchase for your account, country and platform.
- Available to download: an account that already owns the license can still reach its library and redownload the files.
- Playable offline: the installed build launches and its single-player or local modes work without a service connection.
- Playable online: authentication, matchmaking, servers, user-generated content and other network features still function.
- Complete enough to use: required patches, DLC, peripherals, activation checks and platform updates remain obtainable.
A title can pass one test and fail another. For example, a delisted game may remain in an existing Steam library, while its store page no longer accepts new orders. Conversely, a game can remain for sale after its publisher has ended multiplayer servers.

Why an official-looking store page is not proof of a new sale
Publishers and platform operators may leave a product page online for support, ownership checks or search traffic after removing its purchase option. Microsoft’s guidance states that “Delisting a product will make it no longer purchasable,” and notes that a direct product link can remain accessible. Check the live controls on the page rather than relying on its existence.
Look for an enabled purchase button, a current price and a checkout flow that reaches your account. A page that offers only “wishlist,” “unavailable,” “not sold separately,” “owned,” or a library link does not establish that a new customer can buy the game. Regional storefronts may show different results because distribution rights, ratings, taxes and technical support vary by market.
Do not infer availability from a search result, an old review, a retailer’s cached listing or a third-party key listing. Those sources may describe a previous edition, an invalid activation code or a platform that is no longer supported.
Start by identifying the exact product
Write down the identifiers before opening a store. Availability checks fail when a reader searches for a franchise name and accidentally verifies a remaster, deluxe bundle or wrong platform.
- Official title and edition, including region-specific subtitles, remasters, bundles and complete editions.
- Platform and generation, such as a particular console family, PC storefront or handheld model.
- Country or storefront region attached to the purchasing account.
- Publisher or developer, especially when several games share a similar name.
- Base game, expansion, season pass and required peripheral as separate items.
- The account ecosystem used for purchase and installation.
Record the platform’s product identifier or edition name if the page displays one. Screenshots can help distinguish similarly named releases, but the account’s own library and purchase history are the decisive records for an existing entitlement.

Step-by-step availability check
- Choose the storefront and region. Sign in to the account you would use to purchase. Set the country storefront that matches your payment account and intended device; do not rely on a foreign store page.
- Open the official product page. Navigate from the platform’s store search or the publisher’s current support site. Confirm the edition, platform, age rating and publisher shown on the page.
- Test the purchase control. An active price and purchase button should add the exact edition to the cart and proceed toward checkout. Stop if the page offers only a wishlist, an error, a subscription entitlement or library access.
- Check ownership wording. If the page says you already own the item, verify the account’s library and download option instead of attempting a second purchase. If it says the item is unavailable, treat it as delisted until an official notice says otherwise.
- Search official support and news pages. Search the exact edition name with terms such as “delisted,” “removed from sale,” “license,” “server shutdown,” “online services” and “maintenance.” Read notices for dates and affected platforms, not just headlines.
- Inspect requirements. Note mandatory patches, account linking, activation checks, subscriptions, downloadable content, storage space and named accessories. A base-game listing may omit a dependency needed for a particular mode.
- Verify the modes you need. For a new purchase, check whether the campaign, local multiplayer, competitive matchmaking, co-op, user-generated content and cloud features each remain supported. Network features can have a different status from offline play.
- Save an evidence record. Store the exact URL, storefront country, platform, edition, displayed price, relevant notice and the date and time in UTC. Availability can change after your check, so repeat it immediately before payment or travel.
What the major storefront rules tell you

These policies describe platform behavior, not a permanent guarantee for every title. A publisher can impose additional license, server or peripheral conditions, so the game-specific notice remains controlling.
If you bought the game before
Delisting and ownership are separate events. A platform may stop accepting new orders while preserving the entitlement in an account’s library. Sign in to the account that made the original purchase, open the library or purchase history, and look for an install or redownload command. Do not assume that a different family account, a disc-only installation or a subscription copy grants the same rights.
Steam’s documentation explicitly says retired games remain in players’ Steam libraries. Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS guidance likewise described continued redownloads for earlier purchases during the eShop transition. Those statements support the general check—use the original account’s library—but they do not promise that every DLC item, patch or cloud save will remain available forever.
If the item is missing, confirm that you are using the original account, the same platform generation and the same storefront region. Review purchase history and any family-sharing or subscription status. Contact the platform’s support team with the transaction ID rather than buying a second copy from an unverified seller.
Buying or using a physical disc or cartridge
A physical copy changes the licensing path but does not guarantee a complete, permanently playable product. Before buying used media, identify the exact regional release and platform generation. Some releases require a download, a day-one patch, an account activation or a separate online service.

Check the contents of the release
- Determine whether the disc or cartridge contains the full campaign or only an installer that retrieves data.
- Check the publisher’s support page for mandatory patches, compatibility updates and installation servers.
- Confirm that the console accepts the disc or cartridge’s region and that backward compatibility covers this specific release.
- Verify that downloadable expansions, codes and season passes have not already been redeemed; used codes generally do not transfer.
- Identify required cameras, instruments, adapters or other peripherals and whether replacements are still supported.
Test before relying on it
Install while connected to the internet, launch the title, apply available updates, then disconnect and test the modes you expect to use. Reconnect to test account sign-in, matchmaking and downloadable content. A disc may continue to start an offline campaign even after a server shutdown, while online features stop working.

Server status is title-specific and can change independently of sales. An official shutdown notice should identify the affected platform, the final service date and which features disappear. “Online services ended” may cover matchmaking but not the campaign, local multiplayer, saves or already installed DLC.
Make a feature list before purchasing:
- Campaign or story mode without a network connection.
- Local multiplayer, split-screen or LAN play.
- Ranked and unranked matchmaking.
- Co-operative sessions hosted by the publisher.
- Leaderboards, cloud saves, user-generated levels and community downloads.
- Account authentication required at launch or at intervals.
Launch the installed game with the network disabled when offline play matters. For online play, check the publisher’s service-status page and try a current matchmaking test; an old forum post is not a current guarantee. Some games display a server error only after reaching the main menu, so a successful installation alone proves little.
Digital licenses, accounts and platform changes
Digital access is an account license governed by the platform’s terms, not ownership of an unrestricted file. The PlayStation Software Usage Terms explain this distinction directly. Similar account conditions apply across digital ecosystems: access can depend on the purchasing account, regional rights, platform compatibility and the continued availability of authentication services.
Keep the account credentials, two-factor recovery method and purchase receipt available. Before changing a console region, closing an account or moving to a new platform generation, check whether the license transfers. A cross-generation entitlement, subscription entitlement and family-sharing permission are different from a permanent purchase recorded in your own transaction history.

Backups can preserve installed files but cannot recreate a revoked license or a required server. If you need long-term offline access, perform an authenticated installation and patch while the service is available, then test the game offline before depending on it.
Region, platform generation and date can change the answer
There is no universal catalog. Distribution rights can differ between countries, and a title may be sold on one platform while delisted on another. A publisher can also withdraw a soundtrack, character or expansion in one territory because its license expired there.
Write the result in a form that another person can reproduce: “Edition name — platform — storefront country — account type — checked 19 October 2026 UTC.” Include whether the result was a new purchase, an existing-library redownload, a physical installation or an online-service test. When the purchase matters, repeat the check immediately before payment; a listing, price or server notice can change without changing the game’s name.

Troubleshooting failed checks
The purchase button is missing
Confirm the signed-in account, country storefront and edition. Try the platform’s own store search rather than an old direct link. If the result remains unavailable, search the publisher’s support notices for a delisting or license expiry. Avoid unofficial keys until you can verify activation, region and refund terms.

The game is in your library but will not download
Check storage, platform compatibility, account ownership and service status. Review purchase history for the base game and each DLC item. A subscription may have expired, or a backward-compatible version may require a separate entitlement. Capture the exact error code for platform support.

The disc launches but asks for an update or activation
Connect to the internet, install the final supported patch and determine whether activation is one-time or required at every launch. If the update server is unavailable, test the unpatched offline modes and consult the publisher’s compatibility notice; do not assume all content is present on the media.
Online play cannot connect
Check the title-specific shutdown or maintenance notice, account restrictions, platform network status and subscription requirement. Test another online game to separate a local network problem from a service outage. If the publisher has ended the service, no router change can restore matchmaking; only offline or local modes may remain.

- Displayed price and currency, including any subscription condition.
- Base game, DLC, patches, peripherals and storage requirements.
- Offline modes tested and result.
- Online modes tested, server notice and stated end date, if any.
- Screenshot or saved page text with the UTC date and time.
This record distinguishes a temporary outage from a permanent delisting and gives support staff the details needed to investigate an entitlement.
Bottom line
To find out whether a licensed game is still available to buy and play, verify the signed-in regional storefront’s purchase control for the exact edition, then check your account library, installation requirements, DLC and peripherals, and the publisher’s online-service notice. Treat new sales, prior ownership, offline play and online play as separate answers. Record the platform, region and UTC date, because licensing and servers can change after a page has been published.
