A tripped breaker means a protective device interrupted power after detecting excess current or another fault condition. Common causes include an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance or cord, a short circuit, a ground fault, or an arc fault. You can safely note what lost power and switch off or unplug devices on that circuit, but don’t open the panel or keep resetting the breaker. If it trips again, won’t stay on, or you see warning signs such as burning marks, buzzing, or heat, stop and contact a qualified electrician.

What to check first

  1. Note what lost power. Record the affected rooms, outlets, and appliances, and whether a high-current device was running when power stopped.
  2. Look for warning signs. Burning marks, buzzing or crackling, or a hot electrical device are reasons to avoid resetting the breaker. Electrical Safety First warns: “Don’t ignore burn marks, ‘arcing’ (buzzing or crackling) sounds, fuses blowing, circuit-breakers tripping, or if it feels hot to touch.” Electrical Safety First’s guidance discusses these signs in the context of earthing and bonding.
  3. Reduce the load. If there are no warning signs, turn off or unplug appliances on the affected circuit. Do not unplug a product if reaching it or touching it would be unsafe. Too many appliances and malfunctioning products are among the possible causes identified in CPSC consumer guidance.
  4. Identify the device only if its label or controls make it clear. A standard breaker, an AFCI, a GFCI, or a dual-function device may respond to different conditions. The handle position alone does not identify the cause.
  5. Make at most one reset attempt only if an obvious overload was removed and there are no warning signs. Some tripped handles sit between ON and OFF. If the breaker is clearly tripped, move it fully to OFF and then to ON, as described by ESFI. If it trips again or will not stay on, stop.

Do not remove the panel cover, touch internal wiring, open outlets to search for a fault, or repeatedly reset a breaker. If the cause is unclear, seek qualified help.

What may be causing the trip

Overloaded circuit

Several appliances, especially high-current ones, may draw more current on a circuit than it can safely carry. If switching off or unplugging some loads lets one reset hold, an overload is plausible—but that does not prove there is no other fault. Avoid running too many appliances on the same circuit; CPSC advises investigating trips rather than treating a reset as a fix.

Faulty appliance, plug, or cord

A malfunctioning product can trip a breaker. If one appliance or a visibly damaged cord appears connected to the event, stop using it and disconnect it only if that can be done safely. A repeated trip associated with a product needs diagnosis; don’t keep testing it by reconnecting it.

AstroAI Digital Multimeter Tester 2000 Counts with DC AC Voltmeter and Ohm Volt Amp Meter; Measures Voltage, Current, Resistance, Continuity and Diode, Blue
  • Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
  • Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
  • Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
  • Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
  • Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.

Short circuit or wiring fault

A short circuit or other wiring fault can cause a trip, sometimes quickly. A homeowner cannot safely locate it by opening a panel or outlet. If there is no obvious load-related explanation, or the trip recurs, leave diagnosis to an electrician. CPSC lists short circuits among possible causes in its consumer safety guidance.

Ground fault

A GFCI device is designed to respond to current taking an unintended path, which can create an electric-shock hazard. Moisture exposure or faulty equipment may be involved, but a trip alone does not establish which. ESFI’s overview explains the protective role of GFCIs.

Arc fault

An AFCI is designed to detect dangerous arcing associated with damaged, overheated, or stressed wiring or devices. An AFCI trip should not be dismissed as a nuisance or assumed to be an overload: historical CPSC AFCI meeting material lists several possible trip causes, including overload, short circuit or high in-rush current, ground fault, arc fault, and improper installation. The document is technical historical context, not a current code guide.

How the protective device changes the clues

Device type Designed to respond to What that means for your checks
Standard breaker Overcurrent An overload is one possibility, but a faulty appliance, short, or wiring problem can also be involved.
AFCI Arc faults Look for a pattern involving a device or circuit, but don’t infer the cause from the trip alone or repeatedly reset it.
GFCI Ground faults or leakage current Moisture or equipment may be relevant; a trip does not identify the exact source.
Dual-function device More than one type of fault protection A trip may reflect different protection functions, so the label or device instructions matter.

These distinctions describe protective functions, not a homeowner diagnosis. ESFI’s breaker comparison explains the types; it should not be used as a guide to current code requirements or breaker replacement. Do not replace a breaker or select one based on a generic recommendation: compatibility and installation matter.

When to stop and call an electrician

  • The breaker trips again after the load is reduced, trips immediately, or will not reset.
  • You notice burning marks, buzzing or crackling, or a device that feels hot.
  • You cannot identify a clear, safe explanation for the trip.
  • A product, cord, outlet, or circuit appears damaged, or a trip recurs after using a particular device.

Do not continue resetting the breaker to restore power. Contact a qualified electrician; local licensing rules differ by jurisdiction. CPSC advises consulting a licensed electrician when in doubt, and ESFI recommends contacting an electrician when the problem continues.

What service-call figures do—and don’t—show

In ESFI’s 2024 survey, conducted in California and covering occupations in electrical contracting, design, engineering, and planning, 54% of electrical contractor service calls involved tripped breakers or fuses. ESFI also reported that 74% of contractors saw evidence of dangerous arcing when responding to an AFCI-related service call. These figures describe that survey and its service-call context—not the share of homes with a problem or all electrical calls nationally. ESFI’s survey page provides the figures.
