The reliable way to find an offline mobile indie game is to test its core play loop, not merely whether its icon opens without Wi‑Fi. Use an official store listing to discover candidates, read the developer’s own notes for login, save, advertising and first-launch requirements, then install while connected and verify the finished game in airplane mode. Record the game version and the date you checked because offline behavior can change after an update.
Define “offline” before you search
For a useful, testable standard, an offline game is one whose core play loop remains usable without a network connection after installation and any required initial download. Android Developers describe the same principle for offline-first software: an app should perform all, or a critical subset, of its core functionality without internet access. Applied to games, that means you can start and continue the principal single-player activity with Wi‑Fi and mobile data disabled.
The core-loop test
Ask what you actually do for most of the game. In a puzzle game, that may be solving a level; in a roguelike, entering runs, fighting and progressing; in a platformer, playing stages and saving progress. If that activity works in airplane mode, the game can reasonably be called playable offline even when optional services cannot connect.

Connectivity requirements apply to separate features. A game can have offline levels but still use the internet for its first data download, account authentication, cloud saves, advertisements, leaderboards, daily challenges or multiplayer. Treat each item independently:

- First launch: may require an initial download or a one-time device check.
- Regular play: the core loop may work without a connection.
- Cloud saves: need a connection to upload or download progress, even when local play works offline.
- Ads: an offline session may show no new ads, but that does not prove the title has no advertising system.
- Online modes: multiplayer, leaderboards and rotating daily content generally need a connection.
Square Enix’s support guidance illustrates the distinction: its games may require internet access for cloud-save functionality on Android and iOS while regular gameplay does not need a connection. Use that same separation whenever a listing makes a broad “offline” claim.
Find candidates in the right order
1. Search official stores for leads
Start with Google Play or the Apple App Store rather than an unsourced “best offline games” list. Combine a connectivity phrase with a genre and an audience term, such as offline roguelike indie, no internet puzzle game, single-player platformer or offline arcade. Search results are discovery tools, not proof: a store keyword can describe one mode while another mode still requires a server.
Open the full listing and note the developer name, platform, last-updated date, price, in-app purchases and any labels such as single-player. Screenshots and the word “offline” are useful clues, but they do not answer whether the first launch, saves or advertisements work without a connection.

2. Read the developer’s own page
Use the named studio’s website, support page or store description to look for explicit statements about:
- offline play and which modes are included;
- an account, login or age-verification requirement;
- first-launch files or a mandatory initial download;
- local saves versus cloud saves;
- advertising and whether ads are optional or connection-dependent;
- multiplayer, leaderboards, daily challenges and other online-only features;
- supported operating systems and current release status.
A developer statement is stronger evidence than a third-party listicle because it can identify exceptions. It is still a claim about a particular release, so confirm it against the current store listing and your own device test.

3. Separate “download once” from “play offline”
Many support pages say that downloading, installing and updating require internet access while the completed game can be played offline. That is compatible with an offline game, but it means you must prepare before boarding a plane or entering an area without service. Install the title, open it once while connected, allow every required data package to finish, and only then test without a network.
Verify the game in airplane mode
The following procedure gives you a repeatable answer for a specific device and version. It is more reliable than assuming that a store badge applies to every feature.
- Record the baseline. Write down the game’s exact version, your phone model and operating-system version, the store region and the date. Save a screenshot of the listing’s offline wording.
- Install while connected. Use Wi‑Fi or mobile data, complete the download and wait for any additional in-game files. Do not begin the test until the title reaches its normal main menu.
- Complete first launch. If the game asks for permissions, an account or a one-time sign-in, note whether it can be skipped. Start a new session while still connected so you know the normal entry path.
- Disable all network paths. Turn on airplane mode, then confirm that Wi‑Fi and mobile data are off. If your phone permits Bluetooth or other radios to remain enabled, that is acceptable; the relevant test is internet access.
- Start a fresh core session. Launch the game, create or select a local profile and begin the principal activity. Play long enough to reach a meaningful checkpoint rather than stopping at the title screen.
- Close and reopen. Force-close the app, leave airplane mode enabled, reopen it and attempt to continue. This catches games that launch offline but require a server when returning to a saved session.
- Inspect saving and advertised content. Make a change, reach a checkpoint and verify that the local save can be loaded. Try any mode advertised as offline. Mark cloud synchronization, leaderboards, daily challenges, multiplayer and ad-supported rewards as unavailable if they fail.
- Restore connectivity and document differences. Turn networking back on, check whether the save synchronizes, and look for an update. Record exactly what required a connection and what remained usable offline.
A game that opens in airplane mode but cannot start a new core session fails the practical offline test. A game that plays normally but cannot upload a cloud save still passes the offline-play test; cloud synchronization is a separate online feature.
Compare candidates with the same checklist
Use one worksheet for every title. Consistent questions prevent a broad “offline” label from hiding a deal-breaking requirement.

When a field is not documented, write “not stated” instead of treating silence as a guarantee. An absent account note is not evidence that no account is required.

Documented indie leads to investigate
The following studios and titles have published offline claims. They are leads for your shortlist, not permanent guarantees: verify the current listing, version and platform before travelling.

How to use these leads
For Endless Wander, test a fresh run and a resumed run separately: the listing’s cloud-save language should not be interpreted as a requirement for local play. For Ravenware’s games, treat the studio wording as a starting point and confirm the exact product page you intend to install. With Biriki Games, test whether an ad-reward button simply disappears offline or blocks progression. For Vaultris, decide whether the free portion contains enough levels for your trip and whether the one-time unlock is completed before you lose connectivity. For Gündoğdu Games, select a specific title first; a studio-level promise is not a substitute for title-level verification.
Match the test to your actual travel requirement
If you need a plane-safe game
Prioritize a title that starts a new session, resumes a local save and exposes its main levels with every network radio disabled. Complete all downloads and purchases before departure. Do not rely on a game that only works after a daily server check, even if its store page uses the word “offline.”
If you want no login or account
Look for an explicit “no login,” “no account” or “no server required for saves” statement. During first launch, test both skipping sign-in and reopening the app later. An optional account may still be useful for synchronization, but it should not be necessary for local progress if that is your requirement.
If advertisements are a deal-breaker
“Offline” only means a connection is not needed for the core loop. A title may contain ads that load whenever a connection is available, or it may offer ad-based bonuses that disappear in airplane mode. Look for a separate no-ads claim and observe the game with and without connectivity. Vaultris is an example of a developer making a distinct no-ads statement; Biriki Games explicitly warns that some titles can load ads when connected.

If you move between devices
Local saves stay on the device unless the game offers another transfer method. Cloud saves require internet access to synchronize, as the Square Enix support explanation makes clear. Before switching devices, reconnect, upload the save and verify the download on the second device. Do not assume that a game advertised as offline also provides offline cross-device progress.

The game opens but the first level will not start
Cause: an initial data package or server check was not completed. Fix: reconnect, finish every download, reach the normal menu, then repeat the airplane-mode test. If the check is mandatory on every launch, record the title as unsuitable for fully disconnected play.
A save exists but cannot be loaded offline
Cause: progress is stored only in the cloud or the game validates it online. Fix: test a clearly local checkpoint and inspect save settings. If loading remains blocked without a connection, classify the core loop as partially offline rather than fully offline.
Offline mode removes a required reward
Cause: progression depends on an ad view, daily mission or server-issued currency. Fix: determine whether the main campaign can advance without that reward. If not, the game fails your offline requirement even if individual levels launch.
The listing and the installed version disagree
Cause: a later update changed authentication, advertising or online services. Fix: record the installed version and date, capture the current listing, and contact the developer through its support channel. Prefer the behavior of the version you will actually use over an old review.

The game works on one platform but not another
Cause: Android and iOS builds can have different first-launch flows, store availability or save systems. Fix: test the exact platform and region you own; do not transfer an Android claim to iOS or vice versa without evidence.
Reinstalling deletes the only save
Cause: progress was local and no cloud or export option existed. Fix: before reinstalling, reconnect and confirm synchronization if available, or use the developer’s documented transfer method. A game can be excellent offline and still provide no recovery after app deletion.
Build a shortlist you can trust
After testing several candidates, rank them by your non-negotiables rather than by star ratings. A simple pass/fail worksheet is enough:

- Pass a close-and-reopen test using a local save.
- Mark first-launch, update and cloud-save requirements separately.
- Reject any title that requires an account or server check if your trip cannot provide connectivity.
- Confirm that the edition, platform and region match your device.
- Complete purchases and downloads before departure.
- Keep at least one backup title whose offline behavior you have already verified.
This process produces a defensible shortlist even when store metadata is incomplete. It also makes trade-offs visible: a free game with optional ads may be preferable to a paid game with a mandatory server check, while a cloud-enabled title may be the right choice when cross-device progress matters.
Recheck after updates
Offline status is a versioned property, not a permanent category. New releases can add an account gate, change ad delivery, remove a mode, alter save storage or change platform availability. Before an important trip, open the store listing, note the new version and date, launch the game while connected, and repeat at least the airplane-mode start and save-load checks. Keep your notes so you can tell whether a later failure is a software change or a device problem.
What can—and cannot—be claimed about offline indie games
There is no reliable published statistic establishing what share of indie mobile games work offline. A percentage would create false confidence. The stronger approach is title-level evidence: a current developer or store statement, followed by a reproducible test on the exact device and version you plan to use. The result should describe the tested scope—such as “single-player levels and local saves work offline; cloud saves and leaderboards do not”—rather than reducing every behavior to a single yes or no.
Using that standard, you can find mobile indie games suitable for a flight, commute or unreliable connection without confusing installation requirements, optional online services or advertising systems with the core play experience.
