Most “missing armor” cases in Diablo IV are caused by looking in the wrong place, a loot filter hiding an uncollected drop, an Armory loadout pointing to an item that was sold or salvaged, or a transmog appearance being confused with the physical item. Work through the checks below in order: inspect the active character, search the stash, turn off the loot filter, check Legendary recovery storage, then verify the Wardrobe separately.
First identify what is actually missing
Before changing settings or contacting support, decide whether you cannot find a physical armor item or only its visual appearance. These are separate records in the game.
The physical armor item
This is the helmet, chest armor, gloves, pants, boots, or other gear piece that can be equipped, stored, sold, traded, or salvaged. A physical item should be found in the active character’s equipment or backpack, in the stash, at a vendor, or in a recovery location if it was a qualifying Legendary drop that was left behind.
The Wardrobe appearance
A Wardrobe or transmog appearance is the visual design and color palette used by an equipped item. It can remain unlocked after the original armor piece is gone. Conversely, an armor item can still be in your inventory or stash while its appearance is unavailable because the eligible source has not been salvaged or a wardrobe problem is affecting the account.

The dropped item
A drop that was never collected is affected by loot-filter visibility. Stash search, Armory warnings, and Wardrobe checks cannot recover an item that is still on the ground and hidden by a filter. Start with the location that matches the point at which you last saw the armor.
Use this recovery order
The sequence below avoids spending time on a transmog fix when the item is simply in another tab, and avoids searching storage for an item that was never picked up.
- Inspect the active character. Open every equipment and backpack tab and look for the item by name, icon, slot, and approximate quality.
- Check the Armory loadout preview. If a saved build references the armor, look for the missing-item icon and read the loadout state. Blizzard documents that this icon appears when a saved item is no longer available because it was sold, traded, or salvaged.
- Search the stash. Use the stash search and filtering controls. Review all relevant tabs, and remove restrictive search terms before concluding that the item is absent.
- Temporarily disable the loot filter. Go to Options > Gameplay > Loot Filter and disable the active filter. You can also use the shortcut configured under Options > Controls > Toggle Loot Filter.
- Inspect Legendary recovery storage. If the armor was Legendary and you disconnected or left it on the ground before collecting it, check the special recovery stash tab Blizzard provides for that situation.
- Check the Wardrobe independently. If the gear is present but its look is locked or missing, treat that as an appearance issue rather than item loss.
- Document a possible patch defect. If every normal location and the Wardrobe have been checked, record the account and patch details before reporting the problem.
Check the active character’s inventory
Inventory is the fastest place to rule out a simple location mistake. Select the character that last used the armor, open each equipment and backpack tab, and inspect the complete contents rather than relying only on the currently visible page. A saved build may also reveal what happened even when you do not remember the item’s exact name.

Search by the item’s identity
- Use the armor slot first: helmet, chest, gloves, pants, or boots.
- Compare icons and item names with the saved build or a screenshot if you have one.
- Check items that were recently moved between equipment and backpack tabs.
- Do not infer that an appearance is missing merely because the original item is no longer present; salvaging can unlock the visual separately.
Read the Armory warning correctly
An Armory loadout is a record of a saved setup, not a vault that preserves every item. When the preview displays a missing-item icon, Blizzard says the referenced item is no longer available because it was sold, traded, or salvaged. That warning explains why the loadout cannot restore the armor; it does not indicate that the item is hidden in another inventory tab.
If the warning is present, search the stash only to verify that you did not move a duplicate or replacement item there. A sold, traded, or salvaged original cannot be brought back by refreshing the loadout.
Search the stash without hiding the answer
The stash is shared storage, so an item can be placed there by a different character from the one you are currently playing. Use the stash’s search and filtering controls, then broaden the search if no result appears.

A reliable stash search
- Open the stash on the character that can access it.
- Enter the armor’s exact name if you know it. If the name is uncertain, search by a distinctive word or inspect the relevant armor slot manually.
- Review every applicable stash tab rather than only the tab that was open during your last session.
- Clear the search field and filters, then repeat the inspection. A typo or an overly narrow filter can produce an empty result even when the item is stored.
- Check the item-state tools. Blizzard provides Favorite and Junk states, which can help narrow a large stash and also explain why an item was treated differently during cleanup.
Why a stash search can appear empty
- The armor is on another character’s shared-stash tab.
- The search term does not match the item’s displayed name.
- A slot, quality, or state filter is still active.
- You are looking for a transmog appearance, not the physical item.
- The original item was already salvaged, sold, or traded, and only the Wardrobe record could remain.
Do not use stash search to diagnose an uncollected world drop. Loot-filter settings control whether certain item labels are shown on the ground; they do not remove already collected gear from storage.

If you remember seeing the armor drop but cannot find it in inventory or stash, the active loot filter may have hidden its ground label. Blizzard’s documentation explains that hidden item types still appear when you inspect inventory, stash, or vendor views. Therefore, disabling the filter is most useful for finding a drop that was missed before collection.
Disable the filter in the menu
- Open Options.
- Select Gameplay.
- Open Loot Filter.
- Disable the active filter temporarily.
- Return to the area where the armor dropped and inspect the visible item labels.
Use the toggle control
You can also bind or use the shortcut shown at Options > Controls > Toggle Loot Filter. The control is useful when you want to switch filtering off briefly while checking a battlefield, then restore your preferred rules afterward.

What the filter can and cannot explain
| Situation | Loot-filter setting relevant? | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Armor is still on the ground and its label is hidden | Yes | Disable the filter and revisit the drop location. |
| Armor was collected but is not visible in inventory | No | Inspect every inventory tab and the stash. |
| Armor is in the stash but search returns nothing | No | Clear stash search and filtering controls. |
| Only the transmog look is locked | No | Open Wardrobe and verify whether an eligible source item was salvaged. |
Check Legendary recovery storage
Blizzard provides a special stash tab for a Legendary item that was left on the ground or was not collected before a disconnection. If the missing armor was Legendary and the circumstances match, inspect that recovery storage after checking the active character and normal stash.
When this check applies
- The item was Legendary.
- You left it on the ground instead of collecting it.
- You disconnected before collecting it.
When it does not replace normal searches
Recovery storage is not a general history of every item that has ever disappeared. It does not explain an armor piece that was deliberately salvaged, sold, or traded, and it is not a substitute for checking every backpack and stash tab. If the armor was a non-Legendary drop, use the inventory, stash, and loot-filter checks instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRestore a missing Wardrobe appearance
When the armor is present but its visual design is unavailable, stop searching for another copy of the item and inspect the Wardrobe. Blizzard states: “Salvage loot in your inventory to unlock transmog options, allowing armor to have the visual design and color palate you prefer.” The practical implication is that an eligible source item may need to be salvaged before its appearance becomes available.

Verify the source item
- Open the Wardrobe or transmog interface.
- Locate the armor slot and look for the design you expect.
- Confirm whether the appearance is unlocked, locked, or absent from the list.
- If you still have an eligible source item in inventory, verify that it has been salvaged rather than merely equipped or stored.
- After salvaging, return to the Wardrobe and check the same slot and color-palette choices.
Do not confuse an item with its appearance
| What you observe | Likely record involved | Appropriate check |
|---|---|---|
| The gear cannot be found anywhere | Physical item | Inventory, stash, Armory warning, loot filter, and Legendary recovery storage. |
| The gear is equipped or stored, but the look is locked | Wardrobe appearance | Confirm an eligible source was salvaged, then inspect Wardrobe. |
| The gear is gone, but its design is still selectable | Appearance remains; item is absent | Use the unlocked transmog on another compatible item. |
| A saved build shows a missing icon | Armory reference | Consider whether the item was sold, traded, or salvaged. |
Salvaging the source item can unlock its visual while destroying that physical copy. Decide whether you still need the item’s stats before salvaging it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tell a normal item state from a patch-related wardrobe defect
Some reports on Blizzard’s forums describe cosmetics becoming missing, locked, misnamed, or unavailable after patches. Those reports establish recurring player symptoms, not a guarantee that every account has the same defect or that one workaround will fix it.
Signs that the state is probably normal
- The item appears in inventory or stash after filters are cleared.
- The Armory explicitly identifies it as sold, traded, or salvaged.
- The appearance becomes available after an eligible source is salvaged.
- The missing label is explained by the active loot filter and reappears when filtering is disabled.
Signs that a patch defect may be involved
- The physical item and all normal storage locations have been checked.
- The Wardrobe entry is missing, locked, or renamed even though the source and prior unlock state are known.
- The problem began immediately after a game patch or hotfix.
- The same cosmetic behaves differently across characters or contexts without a clear item-state explanation.
A suspected bug should be reported with evidence rather than treated as proof that the armor was deleted. Forum symptoms can be patch-specific, so include the exact patch number in any report.
Prepare a useful Blizzard support or bug report
If the armor or appearance remains missing after the checks above, gather a reproducible record before opening a support request or bug report. This gives support enough context to distinguish an item-state change from a wardrobe defect.
Record these details
- Exact armor or cosmetic name and the armor slot.
- Class and character name or identifier, as appropriate for the support form.
- Whether the character is Seasonal or Eternal.
- Platform on which the issue occurred.
- Current patch number.
- Whether the item may have been salvaged, sold, or traded.
- Where you last remember seeing it: equipped gear, backpack, stash, ground drop, or Wardrobe.
- Whether the problem affects the physical item, its appearance, or both.
Capture the relevant screens
- All inventory equipment and backpack tabs.
- Stash search results with filters visible, including an empty result if that is what you see.
- The Wardrobe slot showing the locked, missing, or misnamed appearance.
- The Armory loadout preview if it displays a missing-item icon.
- The loot-filter settings if the item was an uncollected drop.
- The Legendary recovery tab when the armor qualifies for that check.
Describe the exact order of events: for example, whether the appearance was available before a patch, whether the source item was salvaged, and when the Wardrobe changed. Avoid claiming that an item was deleted unless the evidence rules out a filter, storage location, Armory state, and appearance-unlock issue.
A decision table for the most common symptoms
| Symptom | Most relevant explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Armor label never appeared during a drop | Loot filter may be hiding the item type. | Disable the filter at Options > Gameplay > Loot Filter, or use Options > Controls > Toggle Loot Filter, then revisit the area. |
| Armor was collected, then disappeared from the character | It may be in another inventory tab, the shared stash, or may have been sold, traded, or salvaged. | Inspect all tabs, search the stash, and read the Armory preview. |
| Legendary armor was left behind before a disconnect | It may be in Legendary recovery storage. | Inspect Blizzard’s special recovery stash tab. |
| Armor exists but the transmog is locked | The source appearance may not have been unlocked by salvaging, or a Wardrobe defect may be present. | Check the source item and salvage state; then inspect Wardrobe and patch timing. |
| Saved build shows a missing-item icon | The referenced item is no longer available. | Consider sold, traded, or salvaged status; the loadout cannot restore that original copy. |
| Cosmetics became missing or misnamed after a patch | A patch-related Wardrobe defect is possible. | Capture screens and report the exact cosmetic, character, platform, Seasonal/Eternal context, and patch. |
Prevent the next “missing armor” incident
- Review the loot filter after changing characters or builds, especially before activities that produce many drops.
- Use stash search and item-state tools such as Favorite and Junk to keep valuable gear identifiable in shared storage.
- Before salvaging a source item, decide whether you need its stats; salvaging is the action Blizzard identifies for unlocking its transmog appearance.
- Check an Armory loadout after major gear changes so you know whether it still references available items.
- When a cosmetic changes unexpectedly after a patch, capture the Wardrobe state immediately instead of repeatedly salvaging or discarding items.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
There is no authoritative percentage for how often Diablo IV players lose armor, how frequently Wardrobe defects occur, or how often recovery succeeds. A missing item should therefore be diagnosed from its recorded state and your sequence of actions, not from an assumed incident rate. The documented explanations are practical UI states: hidden ground labels, normal storage locations, Legendary recovery storage, Armory references to sold/traded/salvaged items, transmog unlock requirements, and patch-related cosmetic symptoms.
