If Microsoft Office is already installed, you usually cannot display the complete 25-character product key from Word, Excel, Windows, or your Microsoft account. Microsoft normally ties modern Office licenses to an account instead of showing the original key again.
You can still identify the account that activates Office, check the installed edition and license status, and—on some older installations—display the last five characters of the installed key. Those five characters help distinguish between multiple licenses, but they cannot be used to recreate the full key.
Start with the account shown in Office
This is the most useful method for Microsoft 365 and most copies of Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016.

- Select File.
- Select Account. In some older versions, this may be called Help.
- Look under Product Information for Belongs to.
The address beside Belongs to is the Microsoft account or work/school account associated with the installation. Write it down exactly. It may not be the account currently used to sign in to Windows.

Next, open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and sign in with that address. If the license is listed there, use its Install or product-management option to reinstall or activate Office. For an already-redeemed key, signing in with the correct account is normally more useful than entering the key again.
Check which Office installation you have
Before running any command, inspect the same File > Account page. Record:
- The product name, such as Microsoft 365, Office Home & Student, or Office Professional Plus.
- The version and build number.
- The installation type, such as Click-to-Run or Windows Store.
- The account listed under Belongs to.
For more detail, select About Word, About Excel, or the equivalent option for the application. The About window normally identifies whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit.
This distinction matters because the licensing script used by older installations is stored in different folders. It also may not exist at all in a Microsoft Store or newer account-based installation.
Use OSPP.VBS to show the last five characters
Some Office 2013, Office 2016, and Office 2019 installations include Microsoft’s OSPP.VBS licensing script. The supported command can show the license status and the last five characters of an installed key. It cannot reveal the complete 25-character key.
Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
Run the command that matches your Office version and installation path. The commands are read-only status checks; using the wrong path does not damage Office.
Office 2016 or Office 2019
For 32-bit Office on 32-bit Windows, or 64-bit Office on 64-bit Windows, try:

Last 5 characters of installed product key:Save the suffix together with the license name and description. Office can return several entries when it has retained licenses for different applications or previous activations, so the surrounding details are important.
What “No installed product keys detected” means
If OSPP.VBS reports:
No installed product keys detectedthat does not necessarily mean Office is unlicensed. The installation may use:
- A Microsoft 365 account-based license.
- A newer vNext licensing system.
- Shared Computer Activation.
- A Microsoft Store installation.
- An organization-managed work or school license.
These licensing methods may not expose a traditional product key through OSPP.VBS. Return to File > Account and check the account, product information, and activation status instead.
Fix the “Can not find script file” error
This error generally means that the path does not match the installed Office version, bitness, or installation type:

The folder number refers to the licensing-tool generation, not necessarily the marketing name shown in Office. For example, newer Office products can still use the Office16 folder.
If neither folder contains OSPP.VBS, the installation may be Click-to-Run with a different licensing method, Microsoft Store-based, or account-activated. Do not treat the missing script as evidence that the license has disappeared.

Microsoft 365 normally has no recoverable installed key
Microsoft 365 is activated through a personal Microsoft account or an organization’s work/school account. A product key card may have been used when the subscription was first redeemed, but the subscription becomes associated with the account after redemption.

- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Account.
- Check Belongs to.
- Sign in to Microsoft with that account.
- Install or manage Microsoft 365 from Services & subscriptions.
If the account belongs to a company, school, or other organization, an administrator may have assigned the license. Contact that organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator if the wrong account appears or activation is unavailable.
Office 2024, 2021, and 2019 are usually account-linked
Most current retail editions of Office 2024, Office 2021, and Office 2019 do not require you to retain a key for normal reinstallation after the license has been redeemed. The account connected to the license is the important information.
There are exceptions for certain purchase channels and editions, including some volume-license and Workplace Discount Program products. Therefore, use this order:
- Check File > Account > Belongs to.
- Look in Microsoft Services & subscriptions.
- Use OSPP.VBS only if the installation contains the script and you need to identify a legacy license.
- Search your purchase records if a full key is specifically required.
Look in Microsoft Store order history
A Microsoft Store purchase may provide access to a key in the order record, although this is mainly useful when the purchase has not yet been associated with an Office installation.
- Go to the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in.
- Select your name in the upper-right corner.
- Open Order History.
- Find the Office one-time purchase or individual Office application.
- Select Install Office to view the available key or begin association.
Selecting Install Office in this order-history location does not necessarily install the application immediately. It can display the key and start the association process.
Do not be concerned if a Store key differs from a key or identifier shown on the Microsoft account page. Microsoft says these can be different types of keys and do not have to match.

What to do when Office says the key was already used
The message “This product key has already been used” normally means that the key was redeemed previously and is now attached to a Microsoft account. It does not usually mean the license is invalid.
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Try the Microsoft accounts you normally use.
- Find the Office product associated with the redeemed key.
- Install Office from that account.
- When prompted inside Office, sign in with the same account rather than redeeming the key again.
The pages at office.com/setup and microsoft365.com/setup are intended primarily for new, unused keys. They are not normally the correct route for reinstalling a product that has already been redeemed.

Workplace Discount Program
Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, or Project Professional purchased through the Workplace Discount Program may still require a product key after installation.
- Open the relevant Office application.
- Choose I don’t want to sign in or create an account in the activation window.
- Enter the Workplace Discount Program key.
Also check the program’s order details. Depending on the product and purchase date, the full key may be listed there.
Volume licensing
Volume-license editions such as Office Professional Plus are generally managed by an employer, school, or other organization. The organization’s administrator controls activation and may hold the relevant key or use a key-management service. Contact that administrator instead of trying to recover a retail key from the computer.

Searching the Windows registry for a 25-character Office key is not a dependable modern recovery method. Current installations can use encrypted licensing data, cached account tokens, or organization-managed activation rather than storing the full key in readable form.

Third-party key-finder programs may report a generic installation key, an identifier, a partial key, or a key unrelated to the license currently activating Office. Treat those results as unverified unless they agree with Microsoft account records or original purchase documentation. Avoid giving an unknown utility administrator access simply because it claims to reveal an Office key.

Where to find the complete key if you truly need it
If Office cannot be reinstalled through the linked account and you need the full 25-character key, check records outside the installed copy:
- The original purchase email.
- A product-key card, retail box, or certificate of authenticity.
- Microsoft Store order history.
- Workplace Discount Program order details.
- An employer or school administrator for volume-license products.
- Microsoft Support, with proof of purchase.
A preinstalled copy of Office is not proof that a paid license exists. A PC manufacturer may install Office as a trial or promotional application, which still requires a purchase, subscription, or existing account-linked license for activation.
Recommended procedure
- Open Word or Excel and select File > Account.
- Record the product name, version, installation type, activation status, and Belongs to account.
- Sign in to Microsoft Services & subscriptions with that account.
- If this is a compatible legacy installation, run the matching
OSPP.VBS /dstatuscommand. - Record the last five characters returned, not as a replacement for the full key but as a license identifier.
- If you need the complete key, retrieve it from the original purchase channel or contact Microsoft with proof of purchase.

Bottom line: For most installed Office copies, find the account under File > Account > Belongs to and use that account to activate or reinstall Office. If you have a compatible older installation, OSPP.VBS /dstatus can identify the last five characters of the installed key. There is no Microsoft-supported way to extract the complete product key from an ordinary already-installed Office copy.
