The fastest way to find useful, non-judgmental help is to combine a regulated mental-health referral or directory with a short screening conversation about gaming. Look for a licensed clinician who treats the problem you actually want to address—such as anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, sleep, relationships, loneliness, identity, or stress—and who can assess gaming in the context of your life. A high number of hours is not, by itself, a diagnosis.
Before booking, confirm the clinician’s license and jurisdiction, age range, treatment scope, fees, insurance, availability, telehealth rules, privacy practices, and crisis procedure. Then ask how they distinguish enjoyable gaming from loss of control and meaningful harm. The right provider will take gaming seriously without treating gaming culture or enthusiasm as pathology.
Start with the problem you want help solving
“I need a gaming therapist” can mean several different things. You may be looking for help with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, loneliness, identity, relationship conflict, sleep, school or work stress, or a gaming pattern that is making those problems worse. Define the outcome you want before searching. For example, you might want to sleep regularly, attend classes, repair a relationship, reduce distress after gaming, or regain control of when you stop.
Do not diagnose yourself with “gaming addiction” from hours played alone. Some people play for long periods without significant impairment; others experience serious disruption at fewer hours because of night shifts, health conditions, caregiving, or other circumstances. A first appointment should examine control, consequences, distress, and functioning rather than apply a label based on a play-time threshold.

What gaming disorder means—and what it does not
The World Health Organization’s ICD-11 defines gaming disorder as a pattern of digital- or video-gaming behavior marked by:
- Impaired control over gaming, including difficulty starting, stopping, or limiting it.
- Increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, interests, and daily responsibilities.
- Continuing or escalating gaming despite negative consequences.
For a diagnosis, the pattern must be severe enough to cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas. It normally must have been evident for at least 12 months. WHO notes that studies suggest gaming disorder affects only a small proportion of people who engage in gaming. A clinician should therefore ask what happens to your sleep, health, relationships, school or work, mood, and safety—not simply how many hours you play.
A practical search process
1. Search an official starting point
In the United States, FindTreatment.gov is a confidential, anonymous locator for mental-health and substance-use treatment. SAMHSA’s guidance recommends comparing insurance or self-pay cost, whether a program is accepting new patients, appointment fit, and the qualities that matter to you. Use the filters to identify nearby services, then confirm every detail directly because directories and availability change.
Recommended Free Tools
In England, a GP, local council, pharmacy, or NHS talking-therapies service can help identify local options. A GP can also coordinate assessment when sleep, medication, substance use, physical health, or another mental-health condition may be involved. Local NHS pages and eligibility rules can change, so check the current service information before referring yourself.
2. Add gaming-specific search terms
Combine your location with terms such as “gaming disorder,” “problematic gaming,” “internet gaming,” “gamer-friendly therapist,” “geek therapy,” or “video-game-informed therapy.” You can also pair gaming with the concern you want treated, such as “gaming and anxiety therapist” or “sleep and gaming counseling.” A profile that says “gamer” is a useful conversation starter, not proof of clinical competence.

3. Verify credentials and scope
Check the clinician’s current license, the jurisdiction in which it is valid, the age groups served, and the conditions or concerns treated. Confirm that the person can legally provide therapy where you are physically located at the time of a telehealth session. Ask whether they work with individual clients, couples, families, parents, or groups, and whether they can coordinate with a physician or psychiatrist when needed.
The International Professionals for Gaming and Gaming Disorder Certification (IPGGC) maintains a directory of professionals with current certifications. Its International Gaming Disorder Certificate requires behavioral-health education or licensure, 15 hours of approved gaming training, 50 direct-contact hours, consultation, evaluation, and recertification requirements. Those criteria can signal focused training, but a certificate is not a substitute for a clinical license. IPGGC tells users to verify that a professional’s license or certification fits their needs.

4. Make a short screening call
Many clinicians offer a brief phone or video consultation. Prepare the questions below and take notes so you can compare providers consistently.
| What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| “What experience do you have with gamers or gaming-related concerns?” | Shows whether the clinician has worked with the issue rather than only using a marketing label. |
| “How do you distinguish healthy gaming from impairment?” | A sound answer should focus on control, consequences, distress, and functioning, not a fixed number of hours. |
| “How would gaming fit into my treatment goals?” | You should hear a collaborative plan, not an automatic demand to quit or an assumption that gaming is harmless. |
| “Do you treat my other concerns, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, or relationship stress?” | Gaming may be a coping strategy, symptom, trigger, or unrelated hobby. Treatment should address the whole picture. |
| “What are your fees, insurance options, cancellation rules, and earliest appointment?” | Clarifies the real cost and whether you can maintain regular sessions. |
| “What are your telehealth, privacy, and crisis procedures?” | Confirms where sessions can occur, how records and messages are handled, and what happens if risk escalates. |
5. Judge the response, not just the profile
A good fit takes gaming seriously as part of your context without moralizing. The clinician should be willing to learn which games, communities, schedules, and online relationships matter to you, while still asking about sleep, physical health, mood, relationships, work or school, substance use, and safety. They do not need to play every title. They do need to explain how they will assess your goals and monitor change.
Notice whether the provider listens, answers directly, and leaves room for disagreement. You should be able to discuss benefits of gaming—friendship, creativity, competition, relaxation, identity, or accessibility—as well as costs. If the clinician dismisses gaming culture, blames every difficulty on games, or promises a specialized cure without assessing you, keep searching.

Specialist and regulated routes to consider
NHS National Centre for Gaming Disorders (England)
The NHS National Centre for Gaming Disorders is a multidisciplinary service for people aged 13 and over who have difficulty controlling gaming and its impact. It accepts self-referrals and referrals from family members and professionals. Depending on need, it offers preparation-for-change work, individual or group therapy, parent workshops, peer support, and family therapy. NHS England reported 745 referrals to the centre from its opening in October 2019 through 2023.

The centre is not an emergency service. Its service information states, “We do not offer crisis interventions.” Use the emergency and urgent-care routes in the safety section below if someone may be in immediate danger.
IPGGC certification directory
The IPGGC directory can help you locate professionals who hold current IPGGC certifications. Use it as one screening source, then independently confirm license status, jurisdiction, age range, fees, availability, and treatment scope. Certification indicates additional training and supervised experience requirements; it does not grant permission to practice where a professional is not otherwise licensed or authorized.
PSYPACT Spotlight Directory (United States)
The PSYPACT Spotlight Directory lists participating interjurisdictional telepsychology authorization holders. You can search profile fields such as location, specialty, age, language, and payment. PSYPACT states that appearing in the directory is not an endorsement. Confirm that the psychologist’s authorization covers your state and the service you need, and ask how they handle emergencies when you are in a different location.
BACP Therapist Directory (United Kingdom)
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy directory lists registered or accredited BACP members. BACP advises consumers to check qualifications and professional standards because titles such as “counselor” or “psychotherapist” can otherwise be used broadly. Ask about registration, accreditation, insurance, supervision, complaints procedures, and the clinician’s experience with your concerns.

Gaming- and geek-culture training
Geek Therapeutics advertises training in geek culture, video-game interventions, fandom-based care, digital wellness, and problematic gaming. Treat completion as a training signal only. Independently verify the provider’s professional license, legal scope, current practice, and ability to treat your specific concerns. Training in a culture or hobby does not replace assessment, supervision, or evidence-informed clinical care.
How to compare two providers
When more than one clinician seems suitable, score each one against the same criteria. A simple written comparison prevents a memorable profile or a short wait time from hiding a serious mismatch.
| Criterion | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Clinical fit | Does the provider treat the concern that brought me in, and have they worked with its severity? |
| Gaming understanding | Can they discuss gaming culture without stigma and assess patterns rather than hours alone? |
| Credentials and scope | Is the license current and valid in my jurisdiction? Does the age range and treatment scope fit? |
| Access | Are location, telehealth legality, language, accessibility, wait time, and appointment schedule workable? |
| Cost | What are insurance benefits, self-pay rates, sliding-scale places, cancellation fees, and publicly funded options? |
| Treatment model | Is individual, group, family, parent, peer, CBT-informed, harm-reduction, or another evidence-informed format appropriate? |
| Safety and coordination | What is the crisis response, and can the clinician coordinate with medical, psychiatric, school, or emergency services? |
Choose the provider who meets your essential requirements and communicates clearly. A clinician who understands gaming but cannot treat your depression, trauma, eating disorder, substance use, or safety risk may not be the right primary provider; they might still be a useful consultant alongside specialized care.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What treatment can look like
The first phase usually maps the relationship between gaming and the rest of your life. You may track sleep, meals, school or work attendance, mood, social contact, spending, physical symptoms, and attempts to stop or cut back. The goal is to identify triggers and consequences without assuming that gaming is the sole cause.
Treatment might include skills for anxiety or depression, trauma-focused work, ADHD support, sleep scheduling, behavioral activation, communication practice, relapse-prevention planning, or family sessions. If gaming is serving a valuable function—such as social connection or relief from pain—an effective plan looks for safer ways to meet that need instead of removing it without replacement.

Some people aim for controlled gaming; others choose a period of abstinence from particular games or platforms. The decision should follow assessment and your goals. Agree on observable measures, such as fewer missed classes, a stable bedtime, completed work shifts, reduced conflict, or the ability to stop at a planned time. Review progress with the clinician rather than treating one difficult week as failure.
Privacy, cost, and practical checks before the first session
- Location and law: For telehealth, tell the clinician where you physically are at each appointment. Licensure and emergency obligations are jurisdiction-specific.
- Confidentiality: Ask how records, portal messages, video sessions, and payment information are protected. If you live with family or roommates, plan a private space and consider headphones.
- Insurance and payment: Confirm in-network status, deductible and copay, self-pay rates, sliding-scale availability, superbills, and cancellation or late-arrival charges.
- Access needs: Ask about evening appointments, language interpretation, disability accommodations, captions, and technology requirements.
- Age and consent: Verify minimum age, parent or guardian involvement, confidentiality limits for minors, and whether family sessions are available.
- Coordination: If medication, sleep disorders, physical symptoms, or school and workplace accommodations may matter, ask how referrals and information-sharing will work.
Warning signs that a provider is not a good fit
- They declare that any long session or particular game proves addiction.
- They dismiss gaming friendships, identity, creativity, or accessibility needs as irrelevant.
- They promise a guaranteed cure, demand immediate total abstinence without assessment, or sell a proprietary program as a replacement for licensed care.
- They will not provide license information, fees, cancellation terms, privacy details, or a clear scope of practice.
- They cannot explain what happens if you disclose suicidal thoughts, abuse, severe withdrawal from daily activities, or another urgent risk.
- They repeatedly redirect every concern to gaming instead of assessing mood, trauma, ADHD, substance use, health, relationships, and environment.
You can end a consultation without committing to treatment. If you already started, tell the clinician what feels wrong and ask for a change in approach or a referral. If the response remains dismissive or unsafe, seek another provider.
Get urgent help when safety is at risk
Gaming-related distress can coexist with suicidal thoughts, self-harm, violence, abuse, severe neglect of basic needs, intoxication, or a medical emergency. Do not wait for a specialist gaming appointment in those situations.

A first-session checklist
- Write down the changes you want, such as sleeping before midnight, attending school, reducing conflict, or stopping at planned times.
- Record a typical week: gaming times, sleep, meals, work or school, relationships, mood, physical symptoms, and attempts to cut back.
- Bring a list of medications, diagnoses, health conditions, substances, and previous treatment if relevant.
- Tell the clinician what gaming gives you as well as what it costs you.
- Agree on one or two measurable goals and how progress will be reviewed.
- Ask who to contact between sessions and what to do if risk becomes urgent.
Finding a clinician who understands gaming is a matching process, not a hunt for a perfect gamer identity. Start with regulated pathways, verify credentials and practical details, ask how gaming will be assessed, and choose care that addresses your whole life.
