To collect ice as a block, mine it with a Silk Touch tool. Regular ice forms in snowy and cold environments and can be renewed by freezing water under an open sky in an icy biome. Packed ice appears in several cold-world structures and is crafted from nine ice blocks; blue ice appears near the bottoms of icebergs and is crafted from nine packed-ice blocks. Packed and blue ice resist melting near bright light, while regular ice can melt, so blue ice is the usual choice for a permanent, high-speed boat road.
Ice blocks at a glance
Minecraft has three established ice blocks that matter for survival builds, decoration, water management and transport: ice, packed ice and blue ice. They are related, but they are not interchangeable in cost or behavior.
- Ice: the basic block. It generates in snowy and cold environments, can be renewed in an icy-biome farm, and is vulnerable to melting.
- Packed ice: a denser, permanent building and road material. It generates in several structures and landscapes and can be crafted from ice.
- Blue ice: the most slippery of the established three. It generates in the lower parts of icebergs and can be crafted from packed ice, but the two-step recipe makes it expensive.
All three are useful for moving boats, but the practical decision is usually simple: use regular ice when you need a renewable basic supply or do not mind replacing melted blocks, packed ice when you want a permanent surface at lower material cost, and blue ice when transport speed justifies the extra mining or crafting.
Where to find each type
Regular ice
Search snowy or cold biomes, especially frozen bodies of water. Frozen lakes, rivers and shorelines can expose broad sheets of ice that are easy to harvest once you have Silk Touch. Regular ice is also the only variant you can renew directly by freezing water in an icy biome, so finding one suitable location can provide a long-term supply instead of forcing repeated exploration.

Packed ice
Packed ice occurs naturally in more places than many players expect. Check ice spikes, frozen-ocean icebergs, frozen peaks, ice patches, igloos, villages in snowy plains and ancient cities. These locations are useful when you need packed ice before building a crafting chain, or when you want to collect naturally generated blocks without first establishing an ice farm.
Blue ice
Look at the lower portions of frozen-ocean icebergs. Blue-ice blobs generate at or below the water surface in iceberg formations, so the visible upper iceberg is not a reliable guide to how much blue ice is present. Bring enough equipment to work underwater or clear a safe access route before mining the submerged sections.

How to harvest ice without losing it
Silk Touch is the key requirement. Without it, regular ice does not drop an ice item and may become water instead. Packed ice likewise drops nothing without Silk Touch. A Silk Touch pickaxe is the straightforward choice because it lets you mine quickly while retaining the block, but the important part is the Silk Touch enchantment rather than a particular pickaxe material.
- Prepare the tool. Put Silk Touch on the tool you will use for mining. Carry a spare tool or repair materials if you are clearing a large iceberg or frozen ocean.
- Secure the site. Light and protect the area enough to work safely. For an iceberg, make an access path before breaking submerged blocks so you are not trapped by water currents.
- Mine the target block with Silk Touch. The block should appear as an item rather than disappearing or turning into water.
- Store the harvest immediately. Ice is often collected in remote, exposed biomes; use a chest or shulker box so a fall, drowning incident or hostile-mob attack does not erase a long trip’s work.
If you only need water, regular ice can be intentionally broken without Silk Touch in a suitable setup. If you need the ice itself for a road, wall or crafting chain, do not use an unenchanted tool.
Crafting packed ice and blue ice
Both upgrades use the full 3×3 crafting grid. They are compression recipes, not shapeless recipes that accept partial materials.

The 81-block figure follows directly from the two nine-to-one steps: nine ice make one packed ice, and nine packed ice make one blue ice. For example, a batch of 81 regular ice produces nine packed ice and then one blue ice, with no remainder if you craft the entire batch in those stages. Plan the source material before laying out a long highway; blue-ice roads consume ice far faster than their finished appearance suggests.

A renewable farm works by letting water freeze, harvesting the frozen layer, and allowing protected source blocks to spread water back across the cleared area. The farm must be in an icy biome and have direct access to the sky. A roof, cave ceiling or other obstruction prevents the basic freezing setup from working as intended.
Choose and prepare the location
- Build in an icy biome where water can freeze naturally.
- Flatten a working area so you can move across the surface and see which blocks have frozen.
- Leave the farm open to the sky. Do not cover it with a roof or place an overhead platform that blocks the sky above the water.
- Add walls or a low protective lip around the pan. The barrier keeps water-source blocks in place while you mine the frozen layer and helps prevent accidental spills.
Protect the refill sources
Do not expose every source block to your mining tool. Select source blocks and shield them with the farm’s walls or lip so they survive each harvest. When the frozen layer is removed, those covered sources refill the cleared spaces. Keep the edges from becoming waterlogged; a farm that loses its source pattern may stop refilling evenly and require manual repairs.
Use a repeatable harvest cycle
- Let the exposed water freeze in the open air.
- Walk the surface and mine the frozen layer with Silk Touch, leaving the protected source blocks untouched.
- Allow the refill water to spread back across the cleared sections.
- Wait for the new layer to freeze, then repeat the harvest.
Larger layouts can include occasional protected central blocks as well as protected edge sources. That arrangement shortens the distance water must travel when a broad section is mined. The exact shape is flexible; the essential principles are open sky, an icy biome, protected sources and Silk Touch harvesting.
Make the farm comfortable to operate
Refill water can slow movement while you wait for the next freeze. Depth Strider boots make walking through that water faster and are a practical quality-of-life upgrade for repeated collection. Keep storage close to the pan, mark the protected blocks so you do not break them accidentally, and fence or light the perimeter if the farm is exposed at night.

Choosing ice for roads, builds and water

When regular ice is the right choice
Use regular ice for a starter path, a decorative frozen pond or a farm whose blocks you can replace. It is the easiest variant to renew, but light sources and warm surroundings can melt it. If the build must remain unchanged while illuminated, choose packed or blue ice instead.
When packed ice is the better compromise
Packed ice gives you a permanent surface near bright light without the 81-ice cost of blue ice. It is a strong choice for medium-length boat routes, storage-room floors and cold-themed architecture where top transport speed is not the only goal.
When blue ice earns its cost
Blue ice is the specialist option for long boat highways and other routes where reducing travel time matters. Its slipperiness is the highest among the three established variants, but the nine-to-one upgrade after packed ice means every finished block represents 81 regular ice. A farm that seems large enough for packed ice may still be too small for an all-blue network.
Designing a boat road
Ice blocks are valuable because boats glide over them with very little friction. A practical road starts with a straight, continuous lane and enough surrounding space to enter and leave without colliding with walls. Blue ice is the preferred surface when maximum speed is the objective; packed ice is the lower-cost permanent alternative.

- Measure the route between the destinations and multiply by the number of lanes or parallel paths you intend to build.
- Use the resulting block count to estimate regular-ice needs: packed ice requires nine times the finished count, while blue ice requires 81 times the finished count.
- Reserve extra blocks for turns, junctions, loading areas and repairs. A route that is exactly the measured distance leaves no material for mistakes or future extensions.
Keep the surface permanent
Use packed or blue ice wherever the road will be lit, exposed to bright lighting or expected to remain in place for a long time. Regular ice can be appropriate for a temporary test lane, but replacing melted sections along a distant route is tedious and can interrupt transport.

Use the road for more than boats
An ice farm can supply packed and blue ice for boat highways as well as faster item transportation systems that use boats. Because ice is slippery, secure the sides and endpoints of a route so boats do not slide into ravines, lava or open water. Test a short section before committing the entire material stockpile to a long-distance build.

Water and basic construction
Regular ice is useful when you need a renewable frozen surface or want to manage water through controlled melting and replacement. It also provides the base ingredient for both denser variants. Packed and blue ice are reliable decorative blocks for frozen halls, roofs, walls and paths because bright light does not melt them.

A large ice farm can double as a resettable spleef arena. The exact behavior depends on whether players use Silk Touch: harvesting with Silk Touch preserves blocks for rebuilding, while breaking without it can remove ice and, in suitable conditions, create water. Design the arena around the rule set you want and test it before inviting players.
Troubleshooting common problems
“My ice disappeared when I mined it.”
The usual cause is a tool without Silk Touch. Regular ice drops no ice item without that enchantment, and packed ice also drops nothing. Equip a Silk Touch tool and mine a test block before clearing an entire area.
“The farm will not freeze.”
Check the biome and the sky above the pan first. The renewable method depends on an icy biome and direct sky access. A roof, cave ceiling or overhead construction can block the required exposure. Also verify that you built a water pan rather than leaving isolated flowing-water fragments.

“The farm freezes, but it does not refill after harvesting.”
You may have mined or waterlogged the source blocks that were supposed to refill the pan. Rebuild a protected source pattern, shield those blocks with a wall or lip, and leave them untouched on every harvest. Larger farms may need protected central sources as well as protected edges.
“My permanent ice road keeps melting.”
Regular ice is the wrong material for a brightly lit permanent road. Replace it with packed ice or blue ice, neither of which melts near bright light. Choose packed ice when material efficiency matters and blue ice when maximum boat speed matters.
“I have enough packed ice, but not enough blue ice.”
Check the conversion ratio. One blue ice block requires nine packed ice, and each packed ice requires nine regular ice, for 81 regular ice per blue block. Expand the farm or mine additional frozen regions before extending an all-blue route.
Snapshot-only mechanic: brittle ice
Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 4 introduced brittle ice, a separate mechanic that should not be assumed to exist in every stable release. The snapshot announcement describes brittle ice generating in ice caves, being obtainable with Silk Touch, and forming when flowing water borders blue ice horizontally. Because this is a snapshot feature, verify the exact stable version you are playing before designing a farm or build around it. Until the feature is confirmed in that release, treat regular, packed and blue ice as the dependable established choices.
Practical recommendation
Start with Silk Touch, harvest regular ice from frozen water, and establish an open-to-sky farm in an icy biome when you need a renewable supply. Craft packed ice for durable, economical roads and decoration. Upgrade to blue ice only for routes where its extra slipperiness justifies consuming 81 regular ice per block. This approach answers the three practical constraints—collecting the block, keeping it from melting and budgeting enough material for transport—without relying on a rare iceberg once your farm is running.
