Start with the official Play! Pokémon Event Locator. Search your location, filter for Pokémon TCG, Pokémon video games (VGC), or Pokémon GO, then open each listing and record its date, venue, organizer, registration instructions, age division, event type, and stated ruleset. The listing tells you what game you are actually preparing for; a store’s recurring League listing is not automatically the same format as a Championship Series event.
Play! Pokémon’s local-tournament guidance says: “You can use the Event Locator to find local Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, and Pokémon video game tournaments near you.” Use the organizer to resolve anything the listing does not state, and recheck the current rules immediately before you travel.
Use the Event Locator as your starting point
The official Play! Pokémon Event Locator is the authoritative way to find nearby listings. It covers organized play for the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), Pokémon video games, and Pokémon GO. Search by city, region, or another location supported by the locator, then widen the distance if no suitable event appears.
Do not treat the first nearby result as automatically suitable. Open the full listing and determine three things before you plan a deck, team, or Pokémon GO roster:

- Which game is being played? TCG, Pokémon video games (often called VGC), and Pokémon GO use different rules and preparation.
- What event type and ruleset are named? A League Challenge, League Cup, Prerelease, video-game tournament, and Pokémon GO event are not interchangeable.
- Can the organizer confirm the practical details? Registration caps, entry procedures, age divisions, venue arrangements, and format notes may require confirmation from the listed League or store.
Play! Pokémon advises asking your Pokémon League beforehand for event details. That advice matters when a listing is abbreviated, when the same venue hosts several games, or when a page contains conflicting times.
Identify the game before you prepare
Pokémon TCG
TCG listings are for physical card play. The listing may identify a Standard event or name another format explicitly. Standard is described by Play! Pokémon as the most common TCG format, but “TCG event” alone does not prove that Standard is being used. Look for the stated format or ask the organizer.
Pokémon video games (VGC)
Video-game listings cover competitive Pokémon played on the platform and game version specified by the organizer. Do not infer the rules from the store name or from a TCG listing at the same location. Use the current VGC handbook or the rules link attached to the event, and ask which game, battle format, team restrictions, and version requirements apply if the listing is not explicit.

Pokémon GO events have their own rules and operational requirements. A Pokémon GO listing is not a TCG side event and should be checked against the current Pokémon GO handbook. Confirm the meeting point, start time, registration process, and any in-game or device requirements with the organizer.
Read every field in the event listing
Make a note of the following fields in a single document or calendar entry. Recording them prevents a last-minute assumption from becoming a missed registration or an illegal deck.

Save a screenshot or copy the listing details after you register. Event pages can be edited, and the information you saw during planning may not be visible in the same form on travel day.

Confirm the format instead of guessing
Ask one precise question
If the listing does not state the format, contact the organizer before buying supplies or finalizing your preparation. A useful message is:

“I’m planning to attend the [event name] on [date]. Is this for Pokémon TCG, Pokémon video games, or Pokémon GO, and what exact format or ruleset will be used? What age division, registration method, check-in time, entry requirement, and current legality information should I follow?”
For a TCG event, add: “Is the event Standard, and which regulation-mark legality date will you enforce?” For a video-game event, ask for the current VGC rules document and the required game version. For Pokémon GO, ask which handbook or event rules govern the activity.
Get a written confirmation
Keep the organizer’s reply with your registration record. If a staff member gives a verbal answer, repeat the key details in a message or email so there is less chance of misunderstanding the date, format, or age division. If the listing and organizer disagree, treat the organizer’s current written clarification as the operational answer and recheck again before leaving home.
Use the correct official rules resource
Play! Pokémon’s official resources index links the general Tournament Rules Handbook, TCG Tournament Handbook, VGC handbook, Pokémon GO rules, deck-list and team-list guidance, and legality resources. Use the resource that matches the game category on your listing rather than a general tournament article or an old community post.

- TCG Tournament Handbook: Use it for card-game procedures, deck lists, and tournament operations.
- VGC handbook: Use it for the current video-game rules, team requirements, and event procedures.
- Pokémon GO rules: Use them for the requirements and procedures specific to Pokémon GO events.
- Legality resources: Use the current legality information immediately before the event, especially for TCG cards and changing game regulations.
Rules and resources are periodically reviewed. The Pokémon Company’s January 6, 2026 Q4 2025 update listed changes to the Tournament Rules Handbook, Pokémon GO handbook, League Challenges/Cups/Prerelease Guide, and Store Handbook. A page or deck list saved months earlier can therefore be out of date.

How to verify Pokémon TCG Standard legality
Check the event’s declared format
Standard is the most common TCG format, but you still need an explicit confirmation for the particular event. A listing that merely says “Pokémon TCG” does not identify Standard, Expanded, a special event format, or a limited format such as Prerelease.
Check regulation marks, not just card names
Standard legality changes through regulation-mark rotation. A card name that remains in print can have an older regulation mark that is no longer legal, while a reprint with a current regulation mark can remain legal. Check the current rotation and legality information immediately before the event, then inspect the physical cards in your deck.
Match your deck list to the event
- Write down the exact event name, date, and format confirmed by the organizer.
- Open the current Play! Pokémon legality and rotation information for that date.
- Inspect each card’s regulation mark and confirm that the version you will use is legal.
- Check reprints individually; do not reject a card solely because an older printing rotated, and do not assume every printing of a card is legal.
- Prepare the required deck list using the current tournament guidance, and verify that the list matches the cards you bring.
- Recheck the legality information on the day before travel in case a scheduled rotation or rules update has taken effect.
Do not rely on a deck article, video, or list that does not state its legality date. Advice written before a regulation-mark rotation may describe a deck that is no longer legal for your event.
Recognize named local event types
League Challenges and League Cups
These are named Play! Pokémon event types, not generic labels for every weekly gathering. Read the listing for its game category, format, registration method, and age divisions. The event type can affect how standings, rounds, and prizes are administered, so use the applicable current guide rather than assuming that a weekly League session follows League Challenge or League Cup procedures.
Prereleases
Prerelease guidance is specific and should not be generalized to all local tournaments. The official guidance specifies at least four players, Build & Battle Boxes, 40-card decks, and Tournament Operations Manager for that event type. Confirm that the listing is actually a Prerelease before preparing for those conditions; a regular Standard event has different deck-construction expectations.
Weekly League sessions and other gatherings
A store may advertise a recurring League meeting alongside sanctioned tournaments. A casual League listing does not by itself establish a Championship Series format, a particular TCG legality window, or a competitive event structure. Ask what kind of play is scheduled and whether the session is a listed tournament.

Compare two nearby events systematically
When several listings are available, compare the fields that affect whether you can participate, not just the distance. Use “not stated” for any value the listings do not provide and ask the organizer before deciding.

Choose the event with the clearest confirmed information when two options are otherwise similar. A shorter trip is not an advantage if the format, registration cap, or age division remains unresolved.

Event times, venues, registration caps, and format details can change. Perform a final check before you leave:
- Open the current listing and compare it with the details you saved.
- Confirm that the event has not moved, sold out, or changed its start or check-in time.
- Contact the listed League or store if the page is incomplete or contradictory.
- Bring the materials required for the confirmed game: your legal TCG deck and deck list, your video-game team and required game setup, or the device and account setup specified for Pokémon GO.
- Carry the organizer’s confirmation, registration receipt, and any identification or age-division information the organizer requested.
- Arrive early enough for the stated registration or check-in window, allowing for parking, venue access, and locating the correct room.
If the organizer cannot be reached and the listing conflicts with a saved confirmation, do not silently choose the version that is most convenient. Treat the event as unverified and seek clarification through the listed contact channel before traveling.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Choosing by store name alone
Problem: The same store can host TCG, VGC, Pokémon GO, casual League play, and sanctioned tournaments.

Assuming every TCG event is Standard
Problem: “Pokémon TCG” does not identify the format, and a Prerelease uses a different deck-building process.
Fix: Obtain an explicit format confirmation and check the current legality information for that date.
Using an old deck list
Problem: Regulation-mark rotation can make older advice invalid.

Fix: Verify each card against current legality, including the regulation mark on the physical copy you will play.
Arriving at the advertised start time
Problem: Registration may close before the first round.
Fix: Record both registration/check-in and play-start times, and ask which one controls eligibility.
Applying Prerelease rules to another event
Problem: The four-player minimum, Build & Battle Boxes, 40-card decks, and Tournament Operations Manager guidance are specific to Prerelease events.
Fix: Use those requirements only when the listing identifies a Prerelease and the organizer confirms them.
A compact decision checklist
- Found the event through the official Event Locator.
- Identified the game category: TCG, video games, or Pokémon GO.
- Recorded date, check-in time, venue, organizer, and age division.
- Recorded event type and exact format or ruleset.
- Confirmed registration method, capacity, entry information, and required materials.
- Checked the matching current handbook and legality resources.
- For TCG, checked regulation marks and the current Standard rotation if Standard was confirmed.
- Saved written organizer confirmation.
- Rechecked the listing and contacted the organizer on travel day if anything changed.
Following this sequence turns a nearby listing into a reliably understood event: you know which game is being played, which rules govern it, whether you are eligible, how to register, and what preparation is legal.
