The fastest route to a local fighting-game scene is to search Start.gg by game, location and date, then verify the individual event page before you travel. Cross-check the result in FindMyFGC, join the Discord or social channel attached to the listing, and attend the same weekly event often enough to meet organizers and players.
This process works for Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 and other games, whether you are looking for a first beginner-friendly bracket or a regular competitive local. The important details—online versus in-person format, venue, check-in cutoff, registration status and equipment—can change from one event to the next.
Start with an event index
Start.gg is the broadest first stop because its home page is built around “Community through competition,” with a Find events option and a Choose your game control. Use those controls rather than relying on a general web search.
Set the game and version
Choose the exact game you want to play. A listing may use a game title that covers several platforms or editions, so open the event page and confirm the version. If you practice on one release but the bracket uses another, ask the organizer before registering.

Apply location and date filters
Enter your city or region and select a date range. Check nearby cities as well: a scene may be organized around a metro area rather than a single municipal boundary. Look at both one-time events and repeating weekly listings. A tournament that appears every week is usually the easiest way to become a regular.
Open the individual event page
Search results are only leads. The event page is where you should confirm:
- Whether the event is in person or online.
- The venue name and complete address for an in-person event.
- Start time, pool or bracket schedule and the check-in cutoff.
- Whether registration is open, closed, capped or waitlisted.
- Which games and formats are actually running that day.
- Any entry, age, identification or venue requirements stated by the organizer.
Start.gg can display online and in-person events together, and dates, locations and registration states differ between listings. Never assume that a search-result title contains the current information.

FindMyFGC is a local-focused directory for Fighting Game Community events and tournaments. Its event data is pulled from Start.gg in real time, so it is useful as a second view of the same event ecosystem rather than a completely separate calendar.
What the second check can reveal
Compare the event title, date, city, game and registration state between Start.gg and FindMyFGC. If details disagree, treat the specific organizer listing as the authority and contact the organizer through the attached community channel. A directory is valuable for discovery, but the venue and day-of instructions can still be changed by the organizer.

Find the community channel behind the tournament
A bracket page tells you where and when; the community channel tells you what is happening between brackets. Join the Discord server, follow the organizer account or use the social links attached to the event.
Use organizer-focused discovery
Konnect Gaming describes discovery across Start.gg, Discord communities and local organizers. This is helpful when several events use different names but are run by the same group. An organizer’s channel may announce weekly free play, venue changes, cancellations, side tournaments and registration reminders that are not obvious in a search result.

Look beyond Discord
Not every local group uses the same platform. A San Antonio FGC hub, for example, links Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitch, Discord, X and Bluesky, along with recurring free-play and tournament links. If you do not see an active Discord, check the organizer’s other listed accounts and send a short, respectful message asking where local players coordinate.
Ask for the invite link directly
Community advice consistently points to Discord and direct contact with attendees or organizers as practical ways to obtain a local invite link. A useful message includes your game, general area and the event date you are interested in: “I play Tekken 8 and live near the city center. Is there a Discord for your weekly local?” Avoid posting personal information in a public channel.
Search by game and place when results are sparse
If the event indexes show little activity, search for the game and location together. Try queries such as:

Replace the bracketed terms with your actual city, suburb or wider region. Search several nearby places and include terms such as “locals,” “weekly,” “free play” and “tournament.” Then check whether the result points to a current organizer account or a calendar that still shows recent activity.

Verify everything before you travel
Do a final check on the specific event page on the day you plan to attend. This matters especially when you found the event through a directory, an old social post or a search result.
- Open the current event page, not just the search snippet.
- Confirm the date, local start time and check-in cutoff.
- Confirm that the event is in person and that the venue address has not changed.
- Check registration status and whether late registration is allowed.
- Read the organizer’s Discord or social update for cancellations, room changes or schedule adjustments.
- Save the venue address and a contact method before leaving.
If the page still appears ambiguous, ask the organizer directly. Do not make a long trip based solely on an event title or an old announcement.
Prepare for your first local
Use this newcomer checklist
- Confirm the game and exact version.
- Confirm online versus in-person format.
- Record the venue address, start time and check-in cutoff.
- Read entry requirements and registration instructions.
- Join the linked Discord or follow the organizer for last-minute changes.
- Ask whether setups are provided and whether bringing a controller is recommended.
- Plan to arrive early enough to check in and find the correct room.
Do not assume that every venue has identical equipment. Asking about setups in advance prevents a common first-visit problem: arriving with the right game but no available station or the wrong connection arrangement.

What to say when you arrive
Introduce yourself to the tournament organizer and mention that it is your first visit. Ask where to check in, where casual games are happening and how the bracket will be called. Most communities can explain their local procedure quickly when they know you are new.
Attend consistently
One visit tells you whether the venue and schedule work for you. Repeated attendance is how you recognize organizers and players, learn the local routine and hear about events that may not be broadly indexed. If a weekly event is a good fit, make it your anchor and use larger tournaments as additions.

No events appear in your city
Widen the location to the surrounding region, search nearby cities and try the game-plus-place queries above. Some communities advertise free play or a general FGC gathering rather than a tournament title, so include those terms. Ask in a regional game group whether a weekly event exists but is listed under a venue or organizer name.
The result is online when you need an in-person event
Return to the event page and check its format field, venue and address. If there is no physical venue, do not treat it as a local meetup. Search the organizer’s other listings or community channel for an in-person date.

There is no visible Discord link
Check the organizer’s profile and the event description for Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitch, X or Bluesky links. If those are absent, use a nearby event with an active organizer channel to ask where the local community coordinates.
You are unsure whether to bring a controller
Ask the organizer whether setups are supplied and which connection types are accepted. Bring your own controller when practical, but do not buy specialized hardware just to attend your first local.
Do you need an arcade stick?
No. A standard compatible controller is enough to find and attend a tournament. Specialized hardware is an optional practice or preference choice, not an entry requirement established by the event directories.
Arcade-style options
For players who specifically want arcade-style practice at home, the following specifications are documented by the manufacturers:
| Controller | Documented characteristics | Compatibility or ordering note |
|---|---|---|
| HORI Fighting Stick Mini | Full eight-button layout, micro-switch joystick and an approximately 8-by-6-inch body | Compatible with PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Windows 11/10 |
| 8BitDo Arcade Stick | Designed for professional and casual players and suitable for fighting games | The manufacturer page links to Amazon ordering |
| Razer Kitsune | All-button optical arcade controller for fighting games | Check the event’s accepted platform and connection requirements before bringing it |
These products differ in layout and input method, so choose only after confirming what your platform and local setups support. The practical first step remains contacting the organizer about equipment.
A simple routine for joining the competitive scene
- Every week, search Start.gg: choose your game, region and upcoming dates.
- Shortlist events: keep only listings with a clear in-person venue or a format that matches your goal.
- Cross-check FindMyFGC: compare the local event details and date.
- Join the channel: enter the linked Discord or follow the organizer’s active social account.
- Verify on the day: recheck schedule, check-in, registration and venue instructions.
- Attend and return: introduce yourself, ask about the next weekly session and add the recurring event to your calendar.
This routine separates discovery from verification: indexes help you find possibilities, while the event page and organizer channel determine whether a specific trip is worthwhile.
