Never pay to get hired or send money back from an employer’s check. A familiar job board, professional-looking message, or real company name is not proof that a particular offer is genuine.
Where to look for legitimate remote administrative jobs
Start with the employer’s own careers page
Search for organizations that hire for administrative work—such as administrative assistant, executive assistant, office coordinator, or virtual assistant roles—and visit each organization’s official website. Open its careers or jobs section and check whether the role appears there. For federal government positions, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies USAJobs.gov as the official site for federal openings.
Use job platforms as a starting point, not as verification
A listing on a recognized job platform does not establish that the offer is real. Scammers may impersonate employers or copy and hijack legitimate job advertisements, according to the FTC’s guidance on fake job ads. Before you provide sensitive information or proceed with an offer, look for the specific vacancy on the employer’s official site or verify it with the employer using independently sourced contact details.
How to verify a job posting and recruiter
- Find the employer’s official website yourself. Don’t rely only on links or phone numbers in an unexpected message. Locate the site independently and navigate to its careers page.
- Match the exact vacancy. Check that the title, duties, location or remote-work eligibility, schedule, and compensation match the official posting. If you cannot find the job there, contact the employer through a phone number or email listed on its official site and ask whether the opening and recruiter are genuine.
- Check the recruiter’s identity. Compare the sender’s email domain with the employer’s genuine domain. Search the recruiter’s and company’s names alongside terms such as “scam,” “review,” and “complaint.” The FTC recommends these checks, but finding no complaints does not prove an offer is legitimate.
- Assess the hiring process as a whole. Vague duties, an unusually rushed offer, a text-only interview, a personal email account, or early requests for your Social Security number, driver’s-license details, or bank information are reasons to stop and verify. No single clue proves fraud; consider the full picture and confirm through the employer directly.
Compare opportunities by whether the opening appears on the employer’s official site, whether identities can be independently verified, whether the duties and hiring steps are clear, and whether location, eligibility, schedule, and pay are stated. Those details can vary by vacancy and must be checked on the current official posting; an employer’s name alone cannot confirm them.

Warning signs and how to respond
Requests for money, fees, or paid training
Do not pay for a promised job, starter kit, certification, training, or access to employment. The FTC’s advice is straightforward: don’t pay to get a job or to get paid. A request for money before you start is a reason to stop and verify, not a routine hiring step. See the FTC’s work-from-home scam guidance.
Checks for equipment and money to send onward
In a fake-equipment-check scam, someone claiming to be an employer sends a check and tells you to buy equipment, pay a designated vendor, or return part of the money. The check may later prove fraudulent, while the money you sent is gone and you may be responsible for the loss. Do not deposit the check or forward money. If you already deposited a suspicious check, contact your bank promptly. The FTC describes this pattern in its guidance on phony job postings.

Unexpected texts about remote work
An unsolicited message about a remote position—especially one that starts with a generic approach and moves toward requests for money or personal information—should be verified independently. The FTC’s April 2026 alert covers unexpected job-offer texts. Don’t use the message’s links or contact details as your only way to confirm the offer.
Tasks that require you to deposit your own money
Be wary of supposed jobs that begin with simple online tasks, ratings, or similar activities and then tell you to deposit money or pay to unlock earnings. Do not pay in order to receive wages or access supposed earnings; verify the business and offer independently.

“Virtual assistant” jobs that involve forwarding packages
A role described as a virtual personal assistant but requiring you to receive, repackage, and forward goods is a reshipping scam, not legitimate assistant work. The FTC includes this warning in its job-scam guidance.

What to do if an offer looks suspicious
- Stop replying through the sender’s links, chat, or contact details while you verify the offer independently.
- Do not send money, deposit a suspicious check, or share sensitive personal or financial information.
- Report the offer to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the platform where you saw the listing.
- If you disclosed identity information, use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps.
