The most reliable way to find indie game events is to combine recurring official calendars with local organizer searches. Start with Steam Next Fest for online playable demos, then check the IGDA global events listing and your nearest IGDA chapter. Finally, search your city with terms such as “indie game showcase,” “indie festival,” “arcade,” “game jam” and “pop-up.” Before you travel, confirm the date, venue, RSVP or ticket rule, accessibility details and whether the event is public or industry-only on the organizer’s own page.
No single nationwide calendar captures every local pop-up. A short, repeatable verification routine is what keeps you from relying on an expired social post or arriving at a private industry session.
Use this six-step search routine
- Check Steam Next Fest. It is the dependable online option when you want to play upcoming indie games immediately.
- Search the IGDA global events listing. Use it to identify chapters, community groups and event organizers.
- Open your nearest IGDA chapter calendar. Chapter pages are often where physical showcases, meetups and pop-ups first appear.
- Search your city and event type. Try several combinations instead of one broad query.
- Inspect local venues. Independent game stores, arcades, libraries, universities, museums and convention venues may publish events separately.
- Verify every detail at the source. Confirm the date, location, access rules, accessibility information and current status before making travel plans.
This sequence moves from the most repeatable sources to the most local ones. It also separates discovery from verification: a listing can help you find an event, but the organizer’s current page is the authority for attendance details.

What Steam Next Fest offers
Steam describes Next Fest as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” It runs three times each year—in February, June and October—and is built around trying unreleased games, meeting developers through event features and giving feedback. Because it is online, you can participate without finding a venue or arranging transport.

Next Fest is especially useful when your goal is to answer “Where can I play upcoming indie games?” rather than “What is happening in my neighborhood?” You can sample many projects during one event window and make a shortlist of games or developers to follow afterward.
Check the dated edition page, not an old article
The October 2026 edition is scheduled for October 19–26, 2026. That schedule is tied to the dated Steam page and can change for future editions, so recheck the current Steamworks information whenever you plan to participate. The same page records deadlines for press previews, demo submissions and opting out; those dates matter primarily to developers and media, but they are also a warning that each edition has its own timetable.
Search for the current edition by name and year rather than assuming that a previous February, June or October schedule still applies. A search result may point to an announcement for an earlier event while the live event page has moved.
Make a useful Next Fest plan
- Set aside a defined play window during the event week instead of opening random demos without notes.
- Record the title, genre, controls and one-sentence impression for each demo you try.
- Use the event’s game pages to identify developers whose work you want to follow.
- Expect demos to vary in length and polish; a short demo is not a reliable measure of the final game.
- Revisit the dated event page if you see conflicting start or end times in third-party posts.
Use IGDA calendars to find physical events
The global IGDA events listing
The IGDA events listing aggregates chapter and community activities, including expos, conferences, meetups and indie-focused sessions. Treat it as an index: identify the organizer or chapter, then open the organizer’s own event page for the current venue, registration method and audience rules.
When a listing has only a title and broad location, do not assume it is a drop-in public event. Some entries are talks, professional gatherings or community sessions that require registration. The organizer’s page should tell you whether members of the public can attend.
Your nearest IGDA chapter
Local chapters are often the strongest source for in-person showcases and pop-ups because they know the developers and venues in their area. For example, IGDA Chicago lists Chicago Indie Game Showcase 2026 and labels entries with categories such as festival, meetup and pop-up. IGDA DC links to local opportunities including Play at the Library, Cherry Blossom Arcade and District Arcade.

These examples illustrate a search method, not a promise that the same events will recur in another city. Find the chapter closest to you, inspect its calendar, and follow each event to the organizer or venue page. If your city has no active chapter calendar, check neighboring chapters and regional game-development communities.

IGDA Foundation and nonprofit calendars
The IGDA Foundation calendar can surface events that commercial convention searches miss. It includes game jams and the Download for Charity Steam event. A 2026 event description says it showcases 100+ titles on Steam, demonstrating how a nonprofit calendar can point to a large online collection as well as smaller community activities.
Game jams may be aimed at creators rather than spectators, so read the event description before traveling. A jam can still be valuable if you want to meet developers, watch prototypes evolve or join a community, but its schedule and participation rules differ from a public showcase.
Search your city with precise phrases
Once you know an organizer, add your city and a concrete event type to your search. Rotate through the phrases below; different organizers use different terminology.
- “indie game events near me”
- “indie game showcase this weekend”
- “where can I play upcoming indie games?”
- “game festivals in [city]”
- “arcade pop-up with indie games”
- “IGDA events near me”
- “Steam Next Fest dates”
Replace [city] with your city, suburb or nearest large town. Add a month, neighborhood or venue name when results are too broad. Searching for “showcase” finds hands-on demonstrations, while “festival” may return a larger program with talks or multiple days. “Arcade,” “library,” “museum,” “university” and “game jam” expose venue-specific listings that a general search can miss.
Search the places that host games
Check calendars for independent game stores, arcades, libraries, universities, museums and convention venues. A venue may publish its own event page even when the organizer’s social account is difficult to find. Search the venue name with “indie,” “demo,” “playtest,” “arcade,” “showcase” or “festival.”

Meetup, Eventbrite and social posts are useful leads, but they should not be your final verification source. Follow the lead to the organizer or venue and check that the listing is current. If the only evidence is an undated post, contact the organizer before buying travel or accommodation.
Know what kind of event you are choosing
| Event type | What you are likely to do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Online playable-demo festival | Download and play many upcoming games from home; follow developers and leave feedback. | People who want broad discovery without travel. |
| Indie showcase | Play a curated selection, often in a single venue, and talk with creators. | Hands-on play and direct conversation. |
| Festival | See a broader program that may combine games, talks, exhibits or community activities. | A full day or multi-day experience. |
| Arcade or pop-up | Try games on shared machines or temporary installations, usually with an emphasis on free play. | Casual play, local socializing and unusual hardware. |
| Meetup or jam | Attend a discussion, workshop or creator-focused gathering; participation may be required. | Networking, learning or meeting developers. |
The labels are not perfectly standardized. Read the description to determine whether “showcase” means a public play area, a presentation or an industry appointment.
Compare listings using the same checklist
When several events compete for your time, record the same facts for each one. This prevents a nearby event with limited access from appearing better than a farther event you can actually attend.

Verify an event before you travel
Confirm the date and time
Check the organizer’s current page for the calendar date, opening hours and any separate sessions. A festival may have different public and industry periods. Compare the page with the venue’s calendar if both are available, and resolve discrepancies before leaving home.
Confirm the venue
Look for a complete venue name and address, not just a city or neighborhood. Temporary pop-ups can move between locations, and a convention venue may have multiple halls. Save the organizer’s latest directions and check whether entry is through a particular door or registration desk.

Confirm how admission works
Determine whether you need an RSVP, ticket, time slot, membership, press credential or invitation. If the event uses a registration form, complete it before the stated deadline and keep the confirmation available offline. Do not assume that an RSVP guarantees entry if the organizer describes capacity limits.

Listings can target the public, developers, press, exhibitors or a combination. Read the audience description and age policy. If you want to bring a child, verify both the event’s age rule and the venue’s policy rather than relying on a general “family-friendly” label.
Confirm accessibility information
Use the organizer’s stated accessibility information to plan entry, seating and movement through the space. If a needed detail is missing, ask the organizer directly before the event. Do not treat an absence of information as proof that an accommodation is unavailable.
Confirm that the event is still happening
Event pages change. Recheck shortly before departure, especially for pop-ups, one-day showcases and listings discovered through social media. If the page has been removed or the date is no longer visible, contact the organizer or venue rather than relying on a cached result.
A practical search workflow for a new city
- Start with the city name and “IGDA.” Find the local chapter or the closest active chapter.
- Read the chapter calendar. Note every listing tagged festival, meetup, showcase or pop-up.
- Open each organizer page. Capture date, address, access method, audience and accessibility details.
- Search the venue list. Check independent stores, arcades, libraries, universities, museums and convention centers for additional events.
- Search by weekend. Add “this weekend,” a month or a date range to catch short-lived listings.
- Cross-check social leads. Use posts on Meetup, Eventbrite or social networks to discover names, then verify them at the source.
- Choose by purpose. Pick an arcade or showcase for hands-on play, a festival for breadth, a meetup for conversation, or Steam Next Fest for remote discovery.
- Recheck before departure. Confirm every logistical detail on the current organizer or venue page.
How to avoid common search failures
You find only large conventions
Add “showcase,” “pop-up,” “arcade,” “library,” “university” or “game jam” to the city search. Large convention results can bury small community events, while venue-specific terms surface them.

The date appears in multiple versions
Prefer the dated organizer or venue page over an old article, search snippet or repost. For Steam Next Fest, use the current edition page because February, June and October editions have separate schedules.
You cannot find an event near your exact location
Expand the radius to neighboring cities and chapters, then search regional venues. Local calendars are fragmented, so the absence of a result in one city does not prove that no event exists nearby.
You are unsure whether a game will be playable
Look for words such as “playable demo,” “demo stations,” “hands-on,” “free play” or “playtest.” A talk, panel or display may present a game without allowing attendees to play it. Steam Next Fest is the clearest option when playable demos are your main requirement.

Match the event to your goal
If you want to discover many games quickly
Use Steam Next Fest during its February, June or October edition. The October 2026 window is October 19–26. Keep a shortlist so you can revisit promising demos after the event rather than trying to remember every title.
If you want to meet local developers
Prioritize an IGDA chapter showcase, meetup or pop-up. Read whether the schedule emphasizes play, talks or networking, and attend during the public hours listed by the organizer.
If you want unusual physical play
Search for arcade pop-ups, independent game stores and museum or library programs. These settings are more likely to emphasize shared machines, installations or local curation than a general conference listing.
If you want to support community or nonprofit work
Check the IGDA Foundation calendar for game jams and charity events such as Download for Charity. Confirm whether the event is intended for spectators, participants or both.

What to bring and how to participate respectfully
- Bring the registration confirmation or ticket on your phone, with an offline copy if reception may be poor.
- Use headphones where requested and follow each station’s time or queue limit.
- Ask before recording a developer, game build or conversation.
- Give concise, constructive feedback when a developer invites it; mention what you tried and what was clear or confusing.
- Respect accessibility spaces, seating and queue accommodations.
- Follow venue rules for food, drinks, bags and photography.
For online demos, feedback is most useful when it is specific and tied to the part of the game you played. Developers use these events to connect with players and gather reactions, so a clear observation is more helpful than a broad rating without context.
