To find a Google Keep note, search for a distinctive word or phrase, then narrow the results with Keep’s filters for labels, note types, categories, people, or colors. For easier retrieval next time, apply a few consistent labels, pin only notes you need at the top, and archive inactive notes instead of deleting them.
Search Keep for a distinctive word or phrase
In Google Keep, select the search bar and enter an uncommon word from the note’s title or body. If you remember a label rather than the note’s wording, you can search for the label name. A specific term is usually a better starting point than a broad one such as “meeting.” Google documents search by text and label, but does not promise a particular speed improvement from using these features. Keep can also search text found in photos, such as a receipt image. Google says photo-text search is available in English only. Try a word visible in the image if you cannot find the note using its title or other text.
Narrow results with filters
After searching, use the filter icons shown in Keep to focus on notes with a particular attribute. Google documents these filter groups:

- Note type: for example, reminders, recordings, or URLs.
- Label: notes assigned to a particular label.
- Things: categories such as books, music, or travel.
- People: notes shared with a particular person.
- Color: notes with a selected color.
Choose the filter that matches what you remember. For example, if you know the note contained a link, filter for URLs; if you remember sharing it with someone, try the people filter. The icons and available categories can vary with the current interface. Google describes the search and filter options in its Keep search help.

If you have found a likely note but need a particular word within it, Google’s Android instructions document a separate in-note search:

- Open the note in the Keep Android app.
- Tap More.
- Select Find in note.
- Enter the term, then use the arrows to move between matches.

Set up labels, colors, and pins for future searches
Use labels for recurring subjects
Apply a small, stable set of labels for subjects or projects you expect to search for again. Labels group related notes, and you can search for a label or use it as a filter. Google’s desktop organization help says Keep supports up to 50 labels. Google Keep Help: Organize your notes.

Use color as a secondary cue
Color can help you visually distinguish groups of notes, and Keep also lets you filter by color. It works best as a companion to labels rather than as the only way to identify a note, since color alone may not make the note’s subject clear.
Pin only notes that need quick access
Pins move important notes to the top of the Keep feed. Reserve them for notes you regularly need at hand; labels are more useful for organizing larger collections by topic. On shared notes, Google says each person’s labels, colors, and pins are personal and visible only to that user.

Look in Archive or Trash if a note is missing
Check Archive for notes removed from the main view
Archiving removes a note from the Notes tab without deleting it. Check Archive if you may have put the note away but still need it. Google explains this behavior in its archive and restore notes help.
Check Trash promptly for deleted notes
Google says deleted Keep notes can be recovered from Trash for seven days. If you think you deleted the note, look there promptly; the documented recovery window is limited to that period. See Google Keep Help.

Use keyboard navigation on desktop
For screen-reader users, Google documents a keyboard route to search: press / to focus the search field, enter a term, then use Enter and Tab to move into the results. Google’s screen-reader help also documents keyboard operations for label tabs, pinning, and archiving.
