Steam offers two different ways to try a game without paying upfront: a demo, which is a limited preview you can usually play whenever it remains available, and a Free Weekend, which temporarily unlocks much or all of a normally paid game during a publisher-defined period. Find demos through Steam Next Fest, the demo hub, store pages and category listings. Find Free Weekends through Steam News, the store homepage, individual game pages and wishlist or developer-follow notifications. Always check the promotion’s exact end time in your own time zone before you start a large download.
Demo or Free Weekend: what you are actually getting
The label matters because access, scope and what happens afterward are different.

A demo is therefore the safer option when you want an ongoing preview. A Free Weekend is better for testing the complete game, but you must plan around a deadline and should not assume the license becomes permanent.

Steam Next Fest is Steam’s largest recurring demo event. Valve describes it as a celebration of upcoming games with hundreds of free demos, developer livestreams and an event schedule. Valve’s 2025 announcement said Next Fest was held three times a year—February, June and October. Those months are a useful pattern, not a permanent guarantee, so confirm the dates on the live Steam event page.

Open the current Next Fest hub
- Open the Steam Store in the desktop client or a browser.
- Search for Steam Next Fest, or select the currently promoted Next Fest banner on the store homepage.
- Read the event dates and your local equivalent of the published start and end times before planning a download session.
For example, Steam’s June 2026 preview listed June 15–22, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. That was a specific event window, not a standing annual schedule; dates and times can change.
Filter instead of scrolling randomly
Use the hub’s genre, category and tag controls to narrow the catalog to the type of game you can realistically try. The playable-demos area is the most direct starting point. When the hub provides a hover control, moving over a game tile can reveal an install-demo button without opening every store page.
- Choose a genre or tag that matches your preferred play style.
- Use the playable-demos filter so trailers and non-playable listings do not crowd out installable previews.
- Check the schedule and livestream listings for developer presentations; a stream can explain a game’s systems before you spend time downloading it.
- Open a game’s store page when you need system requirements, supported languages, controller information or a longer description.
Valve said in a 2024 Steam update that thousands of playable demos launch on Steam every year. Next Fest concentrates many of them into one event, but it is not the only place to find a demo.

Find demos outside Next Fest
Search the full game’s store page
Some developers place a demo directly on the page for the unreleased or released game. Look for an install or play-demo button near the purchase controls. The demo may appear as a separate application in your library even though you reached it from the full game listing.
Browse Steam’s demo discovery surfaces
Demos can also appear in New & Trending, New on Steam, genre and tag pages, and Steam’s dedicated demo hub. These surfaces change as new releases arrive, so a title that was not visible last week may appear without a major event.
Use search terms that describe the access type
Steam search is broad, so combine a game name or genre with terms such as demo, playable demo or prologue. A prologue is often a standalone free application rather than a conventional demo; read its store description to see what content it includes and whether progress carries to the paid game.

Install a Steam demo step by step
- Open a trusted listing. Start from the Next Fest hub, the demo hub, a category page or the game’s official Steam store page.
- Confirm that it is playable. Look for an install-demo or play-demo control, not merely a trailer, announcement or coming-soon entry.
- Start installation. Select the install button, choose an eligible Steam library and confirm the download. Steam will show the required disk space and estimated download size.
- Check your library. The demo may be listed as a separate item. Open it from Library when the download completes.
- Use the store page for updates. If a demo is patched, delisted or replaced, its store page and developer announcements are the most reliable places to see the change.
You do not always have to install immediately. Valve’s July 2024 update states that you can add demos to your library without installing them, allowing you to collect promising previews and download them later when you have time or disk space.

- Verify that you are viewing the real game or demo store page rather than a news post or video.
- Check whether the event has ended; a Next Fest listing can remain visible after its playable period while the demo is removed or disabled.
- Look for a separate demo application linked from the game page.
- Restart Steam and revisit the page if the client has stale store data.
- Read the developer’s latest announcement for regional restrictions, an unpublished demo or a temporary takedown.
Find Steam Free Weekends
Free Weekends are time-limited promotions for games that normally require purchase. Steam News listings show each game’s start and end timestamps, and those dates vary by title. Treat the stated end time as a hard deadline unless the publisher explicitly extends the event.
Monitor Steam News
- Open Steam News from the store or search Steam for free weekend.
- Open the individual announcement rather than relying on a headline or social-media excerpt.
- Record the start and end time, including the time zone and any regional qualification.
- Follow the announcement to the game’s store page and begin the download while the promotion is active.
Check the store homepage and game pages
Steam frequently places active promotions on the store homepage. If you already have a game in mind, open its store page and look for a banner or button stating that it is free to play until a specified time. The offer may not appear until the event has begun.
Use wishlists and followed developers
Wishlist a game you might buy and follow its developer or publisher. Steam documents notifications when a demo first becomes available for a wishlisted game or for a game from a followed developer. The same notification system can surface launch news and promotions, but you should still read the event announcement for the actual access window.

Join a Free Weekend without missing the deadline
- Verify the window. Convert the announcement’s start and end times to your own region. Do not assume that a promotion ending Sunday in the publisher’s time zone ends Sunday night for you.
- Open the game’s Steam store page during the window. The page should show a free-play or install control instead of only the normal purchase button.
- Install from Steam. Select the library where you want the game, confirm the disk-space requirement and let the download finish before the deadline if possible.
- Launch while the event is active. Starting the download shortly before the cutoff does not guarantee that you can begin playing after the promotion ends.
- Read the publisher’s progress policy. One official event announcement says players can retain progress if they later purchase; another describes the full game being available only during the event. These statements are event-specific, so do not generalize them to every Free Weekend.
After the event, Steam may leave the game installed while removing your play license. If you can no longer launch it, that is normally the promotion ending rather than a damaged installation. Purchasing the game restores permanent access under the title’s normal license terms.

A full-game trial can be much larger than a demo. Check the store page’s download size and required disk space before starting, particularly if your connection has a data cap. If the event ends at a fixed hour, leave time for updates and shader processing; an installation that completes at the deadline may leave little practical play time.
- Start large downloads early in the event rather than on the final evening.
- Pause optional downloads so the game receives available bandwidth.
- Keep the Steam client updated; an outdated client can display stale store controls.
- Use a wired connection or a stable Wi-Fi band when a short event window makes reliability important.
- Take screenshots or notes of the event’s end time and any stated save-transfer conditions.

Notifications that make new demos easier to catch
- Open the full game’s Steam store page and select Add to your wishlist.
- Open the developer or publisher link from the store page and choose Follow when available.
- In Steam’s notification settings, enable email or mobile alerts you are willing to receive.
- When an alert arrives, open the linked store page and confirm that the demo is currently playable; an alert can identify availability without guaranteeing that it will remain online indefinitely.
Wishlist and follow alerts are especially useful between Next Fest events, when demos are released individually and may not receive prominent placement on the store homepage.

Common problems and fixes
The game says free, but Steam asks me to buy it
Check the event’s start time and your region first. A listing may be visible before the promotion begins or after it ends. If the announcement still shows an active window, close and restart Steam, then reopen the game’s store page. If the publisher has separate editions, make sure you selected the edition covered by the event.
I installed a demo but cannot find it
Open Library and search the game title; Steam may list the demo as its own entry. If it is absent, return to the store page and select the install control again. A demo that was removed by the developer may remain in your library but no longer be downloadable.

My Free Weekend progress disappeared
Progress transfer is not a universal Steam rule. Read the event announcement and the game’s support information to determine whether saves are retained, where they are stored and whether the purchased edition uses the same build. Do not promise yourself that a later purchase will restore every save unless the publisher says so.
The event ends while I am downloading
The access license is tied to the published window, not to when you clicked Install. If the deadline is close, prioritize starting the game before the cutoff and avoid assuming that a queued download will extend your access.
The demo is unavailable in my country
Availability can vary by region, rating, age-gate requirements and publisher settings. Check the store page while signed in to your account and read the developer’s announcement for geographic exclusions. Do not use an unofficial workaround that violates Steam’s terms.
A repeatable weekly workflow
- Open the Steam Store and check the current Next Fest or demo hub when an event is running.
- Filter by genres and tags, then open only titles that show a playable-demo control.
- Add interesting demos to your library without installing immediately if you need to manage storage.
- Search Steam News for current Free Weekend announcements and record each end time in your calendar.
- Wishlist games you may buy and follow their developers.
- Enable only the Steam email or mobile notifications you will actually read.
- Before launching a trial, verify disk space, system requirements, multiplayer requirements and the publisher’s save policy.
- After playing, decide whether to buy, keep following the game or remove the unused demo to reclaim storage.
This workflow separates discovery from installation, keeps temporary promotions from being mistaken for ownership and gives you a reliable way to find new trials after a major event ends.
