A storefront’s Offline Mode is not the same as DRM-free: the former is a client feature, while the latter means the game’s single-player content does not depend on DRM checks or an internet connection.
How to find DRM-free games that remain playable offline
Start with the exact edition and store where you plan to buy the game. Look for explicit statements about internet access, activation, launchers, accounts, and third-party services. A general claim that a game “supports offline play” may cover only a portion of the game, or only play after an initial online setup.

GOG provides a clearly documented example of a DRM-free policy. Its developer documentation says games released on GOG should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether the Galaxy client is installed, or whether an internet connection is available. GOG’s distribution terms define DRM-free games as having no DRM, copy protection, or online-connection requirement for single-player content, with an exception for multiplayer features and any exceptions specified in the game’s distribution form. Read GOG’s porting documentation and the GOG distribution terms for those policy details; do not assume every store or every game follows the same rules.
Use a checklist before you buy
- Read the listing and publisher notes. Check for requirements to connect to the internet, activate the game, use a launcher, sign in to an account, or access a third-party service. If the language is unclear, look for a game-specific support page or ask the publisher.
- Confirm what works offline. Establish whether offline access covers the full single-player campaign, including progression and required content, or only selected modes. Check whether multiplayer, friends, leaderboards, cloud saves, timed events, account-linked rewards, and other server-dependent features will be unavailable.
- Check for a standalone installer. A downloadable installer can let you reinstall without signing in to a storefront client, but confirm it exists for the title and for the version or update you want to keep. GOG documents automatic installer generation and notes that post-launch updates can take several hours to appear; see its standalone installer documentation.
- Verify the exact store build. The same game sold on multiple storefronts may have different DRM, launcher, or installation requirements. Check the listing and documentation for the version you will actually own.
- Test your plan while online. If you plan to use a client’s offline mode, set it up while connected and consult that game’s support information. Do not wait until you have no internet access to discover that a required setup step is missing.
DRM-free and Steam Offline Mode are different
Steam Offline Mode lets users play some games without an active internet connection, but its availability does not establish that a game is DRM-free or that it will start offline in every situation. Steam Support documents Offline Mode and also describes circumstances in which a game cannot be started that way. Check Steam’s Offline Mode guidance alongside the game’s own requirements.

In practical terms, ask two separate questions: “Can I play this game offline?” and “Does this game need a launcher or an internet connection?” A game may work offline through a client after setup while still relying on account authentication, client files, or other restrictions. DRM-free is the stronger claim that the single-player content does not require those DRM checks or a connection.
What offline access does—and does not—preserve
Offline play applies to content that can run locally. Multiplayer and other features that depend on a publisher’s or platform’s servers may stop working without a connection, even when the single-player game remains playable. GOG’s policy explicitly distinguishes single-player access from multiplayer elements, and its 17 March 2022 statement says the single-player mode must be accessible offline and Galaxy will remain optional for accessing that mode. See GOG’s dated policy statement.

Offline files also cannot guarantee that a game will remain compatible with future operating systems or preserve server-dependent features. If a feature matters to you, verify it separately rather than treating “offline” as a promise that every part of the game will work indefinitely.
Keep a usable copy for later
If reinstalling without internet access matters, download the standalone installer and any separately downloadable content or dependencies you need while they are available. Keep those files in storage you control and label them with the game, edition, and version. GOG describes installer backups as part of its DRM-free approach in its 17 March 2022 statement. A backup drive is optional; the important point is to retain a copy instead of relying only on a storefront library or a future download.

Before relying on the backup, confirm that it includes the intended update and any separate content needed for installation. Keep more than one copy if losing the files would be costly, and remember that preserved installers do not solve future operating-system compatibility or restore online services.

When deciding between games, compare the exact builds rather than relying on a store label alone. Use these criteria:
Rank #4
- Choose Wisely: See how similarly you & your friends think with a game all about extremes, quick judgements & surprising standards; includes “adults only” pack for spicier scaling
- Get On The Same Wavelength: Flip the top spectrum card to reveal the round's extremes; as the judge, choose a number card & give your best hint to help everyone guess that number on the scale; at the count of 3, players reveal their numbers
- Guess Right & Win: If anyone guesses right & matches the judge's card, both the player(s) & judge get a point; the first to 7 points wins; play with 2+ players ages 18+
- Funny Random Stuff For Adult Games Night: Throw the best party ever with more party games for adults & families: Decodables, Tell Me Without Telling Me, Would You Rather?, Dumb Ways to Die & more
- Spin Master Games & Toys: Looking for kids games, yard games & card games for adults, kids or teens? Find family favorite puzzles & games for family game night, travel games, kids puzzles & more
- Does the single-player content work without authentication?
- Can you download and retain a standalone installer?
- Which modes or features depend on online services?
- Is the launcher optional, including for installation and later startup?
- Can you preserve the current update and required dependencies?
GOG’s published DRM-free definition and developer guidance make it a useful place to start, but they describe policy, not a guarantee that every title’s implementation will never change. For any particular game, check its current listing and documentation for the store build you intend to use.
