To use a Fortnite Creative island code, open Fortnite, choose Play, reveal the Search bar, and enter the island name or its 12-character code in xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format. To find your own code, sign in to Creator Portal, open Projects, and select a published release. To share an island, send its public code or Epic’s Direct Island Link. An unpublished project has no public island code, although you can generate a private playtest code from the island’s Creative settings.
What a Fortnite island code does
An island code is the identifier Fortnite uses to open a published Creative island. Epic documents the standard format as three groups of four characters: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx. Players can enter that code in Fortnite’s Play screen, where the Search bar accepts island names, island codes, creator codes, and custom keys.
The code is tied to a release, not simply to an unfinished project file. Epic’s support guidance states that only public or privately published Creative islands have an associated island code. An unpublished project therefore cannot have a public code that other players can enter through Discover or Search.
That distinction explains many apparent code failures. A project may exist in Creator Portal but still be unpublished; a published release may be unlisted and therefore absent from Discover; and a private playtest link is intended for invited testers rather than general discovery.

How to enter someone else’s island code
- Launch Fortnite and select Play.
- On the Play screen, scroll until the Search bar is visible. Epic’s search tool is the entry point for island names, codes, creator codes, and custom keys.
- Enter the island code exactly as provided, including its three four-character groups. A valid-looking public code follows the pattern
xxxx-xxxx-xxxx. - Choose the matching island result. If the creator supplied an island name instead of a code, enter the name in the same Search bar and verify the result before launching it.
- Open the island from the result page and use Fortnite’s normal play controls to start or join the experience.
If a creator gave you a creator code or custom key rather than an island code, enter that value in the same Search bar. Do not assume that every string is an island code: the format and the search result determine what Fortnite found.
What to check before searching
- Preserve all three groups and the hyphens when copying a code.
- Check for characters that are easy to misread when typing manually.
- Ask the creator whether the release is public, privately published, or an unlisted release shared by direct code.
- If the creator sent a URL, use the link instead of retyping the code; the Direct Island Link uses the island code as its unique identifier.
Where to find your own public island code
Your own public code is available in Creator Portal after you publish a release. The workflow is:
- Sign in to Creator Portal.
- Open Projects.
- Select the project that contains the island.
- Open the published release. Listed and unlisted releases have island codes; an unpublished release does not.
- Copy the displayed public island code for sharing.
Publishing requires enrollment in Creator Portal. The code belongs to the published release, so changes to an unpublished project do not create a new public entry until you publish a release. Keep the release state in mind when explaining availability to testers or followers.

Epic’s publishing documentation describes an unlisted project as reachable by anyone who uses its code while remaining absent from Discover. That is different from unpublished: unlisted is a published release with a code, whereas unpublished has no public island code.

How to copy a private code for playtesting
Use a private code when an island is still being tested with friends or a team. Epic’s Creative documentation identifies the relevant control as Copy Private Code.
- Open the island in Fortnite Creative.
- Open the island’s Creative settings.
- Select Copy Private Code.
- Send the copied link to the people who need to test the island.
- Tell testers that this is a playtest link, not the public island code for a released island.
An unpublished island can still be shared with friends for playtesting. This lets a creator collect feedback before enrolling in Creator Portal publishing or before making the island available to a wider audience. The private link is therefore the appropriate option when the project has no public release.

How to share a published island
Share the code as text
- Copy the public island code from the published project in Creator Portal.
- Paste it into a message, community post, website, or social post.
- Include a short instruction such as: open Fortnite, choose Play, open Search, and enter the code.
- Tell recipients whether the release is listed or unlisted so they know whether to expect it in Discover.
A code is useful when your audience already knows how to search in Fortnite or when you need a compact value for a graphic, video description, or event announcement. Keep the code in its documented three-group format so people can copy it accurately.

- In Creator Portal, open the published island release.
- Copy Epic’s Direct Island Link.
- Paste the link into a message, website, or social post.
- Recipients can follow the link, with the island code serving as the unique identifier.
The Direct Island Link is preferable when a recipient is using a device where opening a link is easier than switching to Fortnite and typing. It also reduces transcription errors. The link does not remove the need for a valid published release; it points to the island identified by that release’s code.

Sharing an unlisted release
An unlisted release still has a code and can be accessed by anyone who uses that code, but Epic says it is not available in Discover. Send the raw code or Direct Island Link directly to the intended audience. Do not tell players to browse Discover for an unlisted island, because the absence from that surface is the expected behavior.
Why your code works but the island is missing from Discover
The most common explanation is that the release is unlisted. A code search and Discover listing are separate access paths: an unlisted project remains reachable through its code but is deliberately omitted from Discover. Check the release state in Creator Portal before changing the code or republishing.
Diagnostic path
- Enter the code in Fortnite’s Play screen Search bar.
- If Fortnite opens the island, the code is functioning even if no Discover tile appears.
- In Creator Portal, open Projects and inspect the selected release.
- Confirm whether the release is listed, unlisted, privately published, or unpublished.
- For an unlisted release, continue sharing the direct code or link. For a release intended to appear in Discover, review its publishing and listing state before directing players there.
Do not confuse a missing Discover result with an invalid code. Discover is a browsing surface; the code is a direct identifier. Epic notes that millions of Fortnite players browse Discover, but a release can remain accessible by direct code without being placed in that browsing catalog. Epic’s Discover FAQ was updated August 13, 2024.
What each release state means for sharing
Unpublished project
An unpublished project is still in development and has no public island code. Use Copy Private Code from Creative settings for friend or team playtesting. If someone asks for the public code of an unpublished project, there is no such code yet; provide the private playtest link instead.

Privately published island
A privately published island has an associated island code, because Epic includes privately published islands among the releases that receive codes. Its purpose is controlled distribution rather than broad Discover exposure. Give the code or an approved link to the people who should access it.
Listed release
A listed release has a code and can appear in Discover. Share the code for direct access, or share its Direct Island Link when you want recipients to open the destination without manually entering characters.
Unlisted release
An unlisted release has a code but is not shown in Discover. It is useful when you want anyone who receives the direct code or link to reach the island without presenting it as a Discover listing.
Common problems and fixes
There is no code in Creator Portal
Check whether you selected an unpublished project or an unpublished release. Epic’s rule is that only public or privately published islands have an island code. Publish the release through the Creator Portal workflow, or use Copy Private Code for pre-release testing.

The code format looks wrong
Epic documents island codes as three groups of four characters. Recopy the value from Creator Portal or the creator’s original message rather than guessing missing characters. If the value is a creator code or custom key, enter it in the same Search bar but do not label it as an island code.
Search returns no matching island
- Verify every character and hyphen.
- Confirm that you are using the public code rather than an expired or incomplete private-playtest message.
- Ask the creator whether the release is still published.
- Try the island name in Search if the creator supplied both a name and a code.
- Have the creator confirm the release in Creator Portal and send a fresh code or Direct Island Link.
The code opens an island, but Discover does not
Check for an unlisted release. Epic says unlisted projects remain accessible to anyone with the code but are not available in Discover. Continue using direct sharing unless the creator changes the release’s listing status.
A friend cannot use the private playtest link
Confirm that the link was copied with Copy Private Code from the current island settings and resend the complete value. Private sharing is intended for playtesting, so the creator should also verify that the tester is using the link supplied for that current test session rather than an old message.

Recipients do not know where to paste the code
Send these four instructions with the code: open Fortnite; choose Play; reveal the Search bar; enter the code in xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format. If you sent a Direct Island Link, tell recipients to open the link instead of typing the value.

Creator sharing checklist
- Confirm that the project is published before promising a public island code.
- Open Creator Portal, select Projects, and copy the code from the intended release.
- Decide whether the audience needs a private playtest, a public code, or a Direct Island Link.
- Label an unlisted release clearly so players do not waste time searching Discover.
- Provide the Play → Search instructions for people unfamiliar with Fortnite’s island search.
- When a release changes, recopy the current code or Direct Island Link from the appropriate published project entry.
Player checklist
- Use Fortnite’s Play screen, not a random in-game text field.
- Reveal the Search bar and enter the island name, code, creator code, or custom key supplied by the creator.
- For a code, preserve the three groups of four characters.
- If a code works but the island is absent from Discover, treat an unlisted release as the first explanation.
- If the creator says the island is unpublished, request a private playtest link rather than a public code.
- Use a Direct Island Link when one is supplied to avoid manual typing.
Key distinctions to remember
An island code identifies a published release. A private code is a playtesting link copied from Creative settings. A listed release can appear in Discover, while an unlisted release is reachable by direct code but deliberately omitted from Discover. These are different states and sharing mechanisms, so choosing the right one prevents most confusion when distributing a Fortnite Creative island.
