If you want a browser that runs in the cloud without installing one on your own machine, Cloudflare Browser Run is the clearest free-tier option documented here: Cloudflare’s Workers Free plan lists 10 browser minutes per day and up to three concurrent Browser Sessions. That is a small, bounded allowance—not an unlimited free browser or proof that every related service is free.
Microsoft Playwright Workspaces also offers a managed remote MCP server, but it requires an Azure subscription and its MCP feature is marked preview; the reviewed documentation does not establish free browser usage. Playwright MCP itself is free software you can run locally or host yourself. “Remote” describes how a client connects, not who operates or pays for the machine running the browser.
What counts as a free remote MCP browser?
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, lets an AI client call tools exposed by a server. For browser automation, those tools may let an agent navigate pages, inspect content, or interact with a browser. The important distinction is where that browser runs and who operates it.
- Provider-hosted browser: a service runs the browser on its infrastructure. Cloudflare Browser Run and Microsoft Playwright Workspaces fit this model.
- Local MCP server: the MCP server and browser run in your own environment. Playwright MCP’s standard
npxsetup is this kind of arrangement. - Self-hosted remote MCP server: you run the server on a machine or cloud host and configure a client to connect over HTTP. HTTP transport does not make the host free or provider-managed; you remain responsible for hosting, networking, and access controls.
For a genuinely hosted browser with a documented free allowance, start by evaluating Cloudflare Browser Run. Consider Workspaces if you need Microsoft’s managed remote MCP option and can accept its preview status and Azure prerequisite. Choose Playwright MCP when you want to run the software yourself and control the environment.

Cloudflare’s product overview was updated 2026-08-11; its quotas and pricing are operational plan limits, not independent performance measurements. Cloudflare also lists 10 browser hours per month on Workers Paid before additional charges. Do not treat the Free quota as an unlimited trial or assume account setup and related services have no costs. Quotas and availability can change.
Use Cloudflare Browser Run for a hosted free-tier browser
Cloudflare documents Browser Run as headless Chrome on its network and describes AI-agent browsing through Playwright MCP or CDP with MCP clients. Its FAQ says Browser Run sessions run on Cloudflare infrastructure and confirms the daily Free-plan cap. The practical takeaway is that the browser is hosted by Cloudflare, while your MCP client still needs the appropriate current connection configuration.
- Check the current Cloudflare Browser Run and pricing documentation. Confirm that the service and its MCP/CDP connection method are available for your account and region, and verify the current Workers Free limits. The published Free allowance cited here is 10 browser minutes per day and three concurrent Browser Sessions.
- Choose an MCP-compatible client and connection path. Use Cloudflare’s current connection instructions for the supported Playwright MCP or CDP route. Do not infer endpoint URLs, authentication parameters, or client settings from another provider’s setup.
- Set a usage boundary. Keep tests short, avoid leaving sessions open, and monitor usage against the daily minute cap. Three concurrent browsers is a concurrency limit, not extra daily minutes.
- Test with a non-sensitive page first. Confirm that the client can connect and perform the intended browser action before granting access to accounts or private data.
This route suits experiments and occasional agent browsing. If your workflow needs sustained automation, estimate usage before relying on the Free allowance; the daily quota is easy to exhaust with long-lived sessions or repeated runs.
Evaluate Microsoft Playwright Workspaces when managed remote MCP matters
Microsoft documents a managed cloud browser platform with a remote MCP server for AI tools and agents. The endpoint uses Streamable HTTP and is scoped to a workspace and Azure region. Setup requires an active Azure subscription, workspace ID, region, and authentication. An Azure account signup option does not prove that browser execution is free.

- Create or identify the Azure subscription and Playwright Workspace you intend to use, then note its workspace ID and region.
- Follow Microsoft’s current remote MCP configuration instructions in a client that supports the required remote HTTP connection and authentication.
- Prefer Microsoft Entra ID, which Microsoft recommends. If using an access token where permitted, treat it as a password: do not put it in prompts, source control, or logs.
- Keep the preview qualification in mind. Microsoft says preview features have no service-level agreement and that availability and limits may change.
This option is worth evaluating when you specifically need a managed Microsoft workspace and your organization accepts preview software. The documentation reviewed does not establish a free usage quota, so check the current Azure and service billing terms before running it.
Run Playwright MCP locally or host it yourself
Playwright MCP’s standard installation starts the server with npx in your environment. It requires Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client; its installation guide lists clients such as VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop. Use the client’s current configuration format; this illustrative command shows the documented package invocation, not a complete configuration for every client:
npx @playwright/mcp@latestIn the standard arrangement, the browser runs where that server process runs. If that is your laptop, it is not a provider-hosted remote browser. Playwright also documents starting the server separately with HTTP transport so a client can connect to the resulting endpoint. To make that endpoint remotely reachable, you must arrange a host, network access, and appropriate access controls. The existence of HTTP transport is not a free hosting offer or a production security guarantee.
When local or self-hosted Playwright is the better fit
- You want control over the machine, browser environment, and when the process runs.
- You are comfortable maintaining the host and securing remote connectivity if you expose the server beyond your own machine.
- You need to distinguish the cost of the open-source software from any costs for compute, networking, or other hosting services.
For a quick local trial, install a supported Node.js version, configure your chosen MCP client to launch the package using its official instructions, and test against a harmless page. For remote use, follow Playwright’s separate HTTP-server guidance and your host’s security documentation; do not expose an unauthenticated browser-control endpoint to the public internet.

Browser-control tools can interact with pages and execute code, so a connection should be treated as a meaningful permission grant—not as a passive search integration.
- Trust the client: Playwright MCP warns, “This tool runs arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent — only enable it for trusted MCP clients.” Attribute this warning to the Playwright MCP documentation and enable the server only for clients you trust.
- Protect Microsoft credentials: Microsoft recommends Entra ID for Workspaces. Its documentation says access tokens are less secure and should be treated like passwords. Never commit a token, paste it into an AI prompt, or write it to logs.
- Limit exposure: for a self-hosted HTTP server, restrict network access to the intended client and use the authentication and transport protections supported by your deployment. The reviewed Playwright sources do not specify a complete production security architecture for self-hosting.
- Separate test and real accounts: when possible, use a low-privilege test account and avoid giving an agent access to payment, administrator, or personal accounts unless the task requires it.
Choose by workload, not by the word “free”
- Occasional cloud browsing with a published free cap: evaluate Cloudflare Browser Run, remembering the 10-minute daily quota and three-browser concurrency limit documented for Workers Free.
- Managed Microsoft environment: evaluate Playwright Workspaces if you already have an Azure subscription and can work within preview terms; do not assume browser usage is free.
- Local development or a host you control: run Playwright MCP yourself. The software may be free to install, but remote hosting and operations are yours.
Before committing a workflow, check client compatibility, authentication requirements, region availability, current quotas, and billing boundaries in the provider’s live documentation. A feature being reachable through MCP does not make its underlying browser unlimited, free, or safe to expose.
