To tame a wild animal in Fallout 76, equip Animal Friend at rank 3, have 3 Charisma, and search random encounter locations for a lone creature with a Tame prompt. Tameable encounters are not guaranteed. Once you send an animal to your C.A.M.P., stay logged in until it arrives: Bethesda says a tamed animal cannot be respawned if it is lost.
What taming does in Fallout 76
The legacy taming mechanic sends a wild creature to your C.A.M.P. to guard it. Bethesda’s support page says the creature walks there after you tame it. This is different from later pet features: the C.A.M.P. Pets described by Bethesda in October 2024 stay around your base and do not follow you through the world. Bethesda’s World Pets feature, described in a September 18, 2026 Public Test Server (PTS) article, is a separate system for summoning owned pets as travel companions; that PTS description does not say the legacy taming mechanic was removed or replaced.
Bethesda summarized the 2024 feature this way: “C.A.M.P. Pets will not follow you in the world – they are just that – a C.A.M.P. pet!” Bethesda’s C.A.M.P. Pets announcement explains that feature; its September 2026 World Pets article discusses a PTS feature, not a guarantee of live-game behavior.
What you need before searching
- Animal Friend, rank 3: Bethesda says rank 3 gives a chance to tame an animal and send it to your C.A.M.P.
- 3 Charisma: Bethesda’s support page lists this as necessary.
- The perk equipped before you approach: A community guide updated in June 2025 recommends equipping Animal Friend before entering a random encounter area. Treat this as community guidance, not a separately confirmed official rule.
Bethesda also says you can have only one tamed animal guarding your C.A.M.P. at a time. Its support page is in French and does not show a visible update date, so check localized creature names in-game rather than relying on translated labels for exclusions.

Where to find a tameable pet
Search random encounter locations rather than expecting a pet at a fixed spawn. Each stop can produce one of many possible scenes, and a tameable animal is only one outcome. A community location update dated April 28, 2026 warns that game-map changes made older encounter maps obsolete; use a currently maintained, numbered map such as this updated random encounter location guide instead of treating an old map pin as a guarantee.
When you reach a location, look for a creature that is by itself. A June 2025 community guide says the Tame option requires the creature to be alone. If the encounter has no eligible animal, or the animal is accompanied by other enemies, move on or clear the scene and keep searching. Rare creatures may take more attempts to find, according to the community location guide.

How to tame an animal and send it to camp
- Equip Animal Friend at rank 3 and confirm you have 3 Charisma before you set out.
- Visit random encounter locations and check each scene for a lone, potentially eligible creature. No location guarantees a tame.
- Approach until the Tame prompt appears. The community guide says that if you see only Pacify, get closer. It also suggests an unscoped weapon may let the prompt appear from farther away, but this is a tip, not a guaranteed method.
- Select Tame and confirm sending the animal to your C.A.M.P.
- Stay logged in while it travels. Bethesda warns that disconnecting before the animal reaches your C.A.M.P. can make it disappear. Community guidance recommends letting it make the trip alone rather than escorting it, because following may draw hostile attention.
Which creatures can you tame?
Bethesda confirms the perk and Charisma requirements, but the creature examples below come from a community-maintained June 2025 roster, not an official exhaustive list. Availability and the prompt can depend on the encounter you find.
| Animal Friend rank | Community-reported examples |
|---|---|
| Rank 1 | Cats, dogs, brahmin, and wolves |
| Rank 2 | Mirelurk hunters, mirelurk kings, radtoads, snallygasters, and yao guai |
| Rank 3 | Deathclaws and mega sloths |
Bethesda’s French support page also says some creature categories are no longer considered animals for Animal Friend and cannot be pacified, including mega sloths, mirelurks, and scorchbeasts in its wording. Because that is a localized page and uses terminology that may not map neatly to the English roster, verify a creature’s actual Tame prompt rather than treating a translated category list as exhaustive.

How to protect a newly tamed animal
The trip and the C.A.M.P. itself can expose the animal to danger. Bethesda says a tamed animal cannot be respawned and warns that disconnecting before it reaches camp can cause it to disappear. Community advice offers these precautions:
Quick Recap

- Purchase 500 Atoms, an in-game currency you can use in Fallout 76 to buy a variety of customization items for your character.
- Visit the in-game Atomic Shop to see what’s available.

- Let the animal travel to camp without following it, to reduce the chance that you draw threats toward it.
- Place the C.A.M.P. module near ground level and leave open space for the animal to patrol.
- Consider whether hostile enemies or other players may reach the C.A.M.P. and attack it.
Why the Tame prompt may not appear
- You see Pacify instead: The community guide recommends moving closer. It also notes that an unscoped weapon may help the prompt appear at a distance, but does not guarantee it.
- The creature is not alone: The same guide says a lone creature is needed for Tame to appear. Move on or clear the encounter and check another location.
- The animal is not eligible: Creature lists are community-reported examples, not a complete official roster. Some creatures may also be excluded under Bethesda’s Animal Friend rules.
- The encounter has no tameable creature: Random encounter sites have multiple possible outcomes. Try another maintained location rather than waiting at one spot for a guaranteed spawn.
