Start with your city’s arts department or public-art office, then verify each wall in person before you walk or photograph it. Use an artist-linked or community street-art map as a supplement, not as proof that a mural is permanent, legally accessible, or available for commercial use. Photograph only from publicly accessible space, keep a record of the artist and location, and ask the owner or artist before any staged, close-access, drone, print-sale, or advertising use.
Find the most reliable mural locations first
A mural map is a discovery tool. The safest starting point is an official source maintained by a city arts department, public-art office, planning agency, or cultural program. Search for [city] arts department mural map, [city] public art map, and [neighborhood] mural walk. Open the map’s information or methodology page and check when it was updated, who maintains it, what kinds of walls it includes, and how corrections are handled.
Official coverage is usually narrower than the total number of painted walls. Boston’s mural map, for example, combines city-commissioned murals with community and artist initiatives and says it will expand over time. It excludes murals that function as advertisements or contain logos. That means a wall missing from the map may still be a legitimate public artwork, while a listed wall may not represent every mural in the neighborhood.
Use a street-art map for additional leads
Community-maintained services can reveal independent work that a municipal inventory does not include. BeThereGo describes a free map with city and neighborhood pages, artist links, nearby walking routes, and user submissions. Its visitor page reports coverage in 54 cities, with the amount and quality of information varying by city. Treat those listings as leads: confirm the address, check the wall’s condition, and make sure the route is genuinely public before you go.

Look for artist-linked records
An artist-linked record is especially useful when attribution matters. Murals of the World says its records begin with city open data and are checked by hand. Each wall names its artist, and the service accepts correction requests. It can also route photography or licensing questions to the artist. Those features make it more useful than a pin with only a street address, but the record still needs an on-site check.
Search local organizations and archives
Neighborhood arts nonprofits, business-improvement districts, tourism offices, libraries, and community archives often publish self-guided walks or lists of walls. These pages may have better neighborhood context than a general map, such as the name of a festival, a commissioning organization, or the date a wall was painted. Check whether the page identifies an editor or update date. An undated list can be valuable historically but unreliable for a current walking route.
Compare maps before choosing a route
Do not choose a map solely because it has the most pins. Compare the information you need for the specific outing.

Save the map page and the individual listing before leaving. Coverage changes, a mobile page may load differently in the field, and a listing can disappear while you are walking.
Verify every wall on the day of your visit
Murals are temporary in ways that ordinary landmarks are not. A building may be renovated, a wall may be repainted, or a temporary installation may be removed. Even a correct pin can lead to the wrong side of a block if an address covers multiple entrances.
- Open the listing and copy the full street address or nearest intersection into your notes.
- Check the latest update or correction date. If none is shown, mark the stop as unverified.
- Use current street imagery or a local announcement only as a preview; it may itself be out of date.
- When you arrive, confirm the wall’s subject, neighboring storefront, and orientation before unpacking your camera.
- Keep a backup stop in the same neighborhood in case the wall has been painted over, fenced off, or made inaccessible.
Do not infer legal status from visibility. A mural can be plainly visible from a sidewalk and still be on private property, inside a business courtyard, behind a gate, or subject to restricted hours.

Plan a walk that is safe and photographable
Group stops by neighborhood
Arrange stops by walking distance rather than by the order in which a search engine displays them. Leave time for changing light, pedestrian traffic, and the possibility that one location needs extra observation. A route with fewer walls and usable light is usually more productive than a rushed list spread across the city.

Prepare an offline record
Before leaving, save each address, intersection, artist name, title if known, and map URL in a notes app. Download or screenshot the route if your service supports it. Add a blank field for the date, approximate time, condition, and access notes; completing those fields on site is faster than reconstructing them later.
Check access conditions
Look for language such as “inside,” “courtyard,” “private building,” “behind gate,” or “business hours.” Plan for daylight and visible public routes. Keep sidewalks, driveways, loading areas, storefronts, and emergency access clear. Never climb a wall, fence, vehicle, or street fixture to improve your view.
Choose light and viewpoint deliberately
Photograph the whole wall first, including enough surroundings to show its relationship to the street. This establishing frame helps identify the location if the mural changes later. Make closer detail frames only while remaining in a public, unrestricted position.
- Change your angle to reduce reflections from glossy paint or protective coatings.
- Wait for cloud cover or softer light when hard shadows obscure faces, lettering, or textured paint.
- Keep the camera parallel to the wall for a documentary record; a tilted angle can be expressive, but it makes the geometry harder to compare.
- Photograph a visible signature, plaque, or identifying text in a separate frame.
- Do not use a flash at close range on fragile paint, and never wet, clean, lean against, or otherwise handle the wall.
Photograph from public space without disturbing the site
For an ordinary personal or local-history project, remain where any member of the public may lawfully stand. A sidewalk, public plaza, or publicly accessible street edge is generally the appropriate position, subject to local rules. Do not enter a fenced lot, employee-only area, private courtyard, or business interior simply because the mural is easier to see there.
Keep your equipment compact enough that people can pass. Do not block a doorway, ramp, driveway, bus stop, fire lane, or delivery route while composing. If a person, vehicle, or storefront sign is prominent in the frame, wait for a clear moment or recompose rather than asking strangers to move unless you have a specific reason and their cooperation.

Use a wider lens or step farther back instead of backing into traffic. If the only safe viewpoint cuts off part of the wall, record the limitation in your notes and make a second frame from another public angle. A complete but slightly distant photograph is more useful than a close view made from an unsafe position.
Understand permission, ownership, and local mural rules
Rules differ by city, property type, historic district, and intended use. A map entry does not establish that a wall was authorized, that it may remain indefinitely, or that you may license a photograph.
Los Angeles illustrates how a city can define and register murals
Los Angeles defines an Original Art Mural as “A one-of-a-kind, hand-painted, hand-tiled, or digitally printed image on the exterior wall of a building that does not contain any commercial message.” Its registration process includes property-owner permission, a neighborhood involvement meeting, and a two-year covenant for registered new murals. The city’s current FAQ lists a $60.00 registration fee. If you need to check a project’s legal status, the city’s guidance says to send the address and an image to its Public Art Division. These requirements apply to that local program; they are not a universal rule for every city.
Other cities show why local offices matter
Montreal’s guidance for work on a private building asks for owner authorization, photographs of existing conditions, a project sketch or montage, and a ground-occupancy plan with safety measures. Oklahoma City says murals in design, historic-preservation, or landmark districts may require a certificate of approval or appropriateness. If you are arranging close access, a commissioned shoot, equipment placement, or a new mural, check the local arts, planning, and historic-preservation offices before scheduling.
Ask before expanding the shoot
Use a short, specific request: “I’m documenting the mural for a personal/local-history photo project. Is this public-facing area okay to photograph from, and who should I credit?” Ask the artist or owner before requesting a ladder, entering a courtyard, staging people, operating a drone, selling prints that prominently feature the work, or licensing the image for advertising. Permission to stand in a space is not automatically permission to reproduce or commercially exploit the artwork.
Separate photography from commercial rights
Murals of the World states: “Copyright in every mural stays with its artist.” It also states: “A record here is not a licence.” That distinction is the key practical rule. A public-facing wall can be photographed from a lawful viewpoint while the artist retains rights in the underlying artwork. A map’s inclusion does not transfer those rights or guarantee that the property owner, artist, or commissioning program agrees to a particular use.

For personal documentation, keep the image and your notes together. For a book, paid editorial assignment, merchandise, advertising, a brand campaign, a prominent print sale, or any use that may imply endorsement, identify the rights holders and request written permission before publication or distribution. Ask what the permission covers: territory, duration, media, cropping, retouching, credit line, and whether people, logos, or neighboring buildings create additional issues.

When permission is uncertain, limit the image to documentary editorial use only if your publisher and legal adviser agree that the intended use qualifies.
Build a complete attribution record
Record information while you are standing at the wall. Names and titles are easy to misremember after visiting several locations.
- Artist’s name, including the exact spelling and any collective or studio name.
- Mural title, if the artist, plaque, city record, or program supplies one.
- Exact address or nearest intersection.
- Date and approximate time photographed.
- Discovery source and the date you last checked it.
- Owner, artist, or program permission, including who granted it and what use was discussed.
- Condition notes: paint-over, fading, construction, damage, scaffolding, fencing, or access restrictions.
- File names that connect each image to the location, such as
2026-10-19_city_intersection_artist_01.jpg.
Photograph the signature or plaque when visible, but do not treat a signature as conclusive if the map or program gives a different attribution. Preserve the original file and metadata, then add a short caption in your archive using the recorded facts.

Map providers often have a formal submission route. Follow the service’s stated process rather than sending personal information publicly. Detroit’s mural-hunter announcement describes a workflow in which contributors send a mural photo, artist name, and hunter contact information. BeThereGo invites users to photograph an unlisted mural for inclusion on its map. Before submitting, confirm that your image may be shared under the provider’s terms and that you have permission to disclose any contact details.

Send corrections when a wall has been removed, repainted, misattributed, or moved behind restricted access. Include the address, what changed, the date you observed it, and a neutral description. If you are unsure whether the artist name is correct, say so instead of presenting a guess as a correction.

Troubleshoot common mural-hunting problems
The pin leads to a blank wall
Check the opposite side of the building, the nearest intersection, and the listing’s photographs. If construction or a new coating is present, document the current condition and move to your backup stop. Do not enter a work zone to search for the original surface.
The mural is visible but unreachable
Find a second public viewpoint across the street or around the block. If none exists, record the location without crossing a barrier or entering a private area. Contact the owner or artist only if you need access for a legitimate project.
The artist is not credited
Look for a signature, plaque, commissioning program, city open-data entry, or artist-linked record. Keep the attribution as “artist not identified” until a reliable source confirms it. Do not copy an unverified name from a social-media comment into a permanent caption.

Note the listing date, photograph the current surroundings from public space, and submit a correction through the map’s stated channel. Keep the old listing in your private notes if it helps explain why the stop was planned, but do not present it as proof that the mural still exists.
You want to use the image commercially
Pause publication, identify the mural artist and property owner, and request written permission that matches the planned use. A public location and a map listing do not replace that process.
A field checklist for every mural
- Confirm the city or neighborhood map’s source, update date, and access notes.
- Save the address, intersection, artist, title, and discovery source offline.
- Verify the wall and its condition on arrival.
- Stay on a lawful public route; do not trespass, climb, block, or touch.
- Make a full-wall establishing frame before detail shots.
- Capture a signature, plaque, or identifying text when visible.
- Use a safe angle, soft light when possible, and no close-range flash on fragile paint.
- Record date, time, location, artist spelling, condition, and permissions.
- Back up the files and attach the notes to the image record.
- Ask the artist or owner before any close-access, drone, staged, print-sale, licensing, or advertising use.
What a good mural map can—and cannot—tell you
A strong map helps you discover a wall, identify its neighborhood, and begin attribution. It cannot guarantee that the mural is still there, that the route is open, that the work was authorized, or that you have rights to sell or license your photograph. Use official municipal information for local definitions and procedures, artist-linked records for attribution and contact pathways, and your own on-site verification for current condition and access. Keeping those roles separate produces a safer walk and a more accurate archive.
