On an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, open the Store, search or browse for a game, check that its product page is the console version and marked free-to-play, then select the free installation option shown there. The exact button label and layout may vary as the console interface changes.
Find free games in the Xbox Store
- From the console home screen, open Store.
- Search for a game by name, or browse the Store’s navigation and game categories to discover titles. Xbox recommends using Store universal search and its navigation to find games: Xbox digital games guidance.
- Open the game’s product page and confirm it is the Xbox console listing and is marked free or free-to-play. Similar titles can have listings for different platforms, so check that the page is for Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One.
- Select the free installation action displayed on that page and follow any on-screen prompts. The precise wording can vary by interface version.
- Wait for the game to download and install. Digital games are downloaded to the console and use its storage; if the installation cannot proceed because storage is limited, make room and try again.
Browse Xbox’s free-to-play catalog
Xbox’s free-to-play catalog for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One is another place to discover games before searching for them on your console. The catalog provides genre browsing, including action-adventure, fighting, strategy, kids and family, racing and flying, role-playing, shooter, and sports.
Examples shown in the catalog when accessed on October 4, 2026, included Fortnite, Roblox – Xbox, Call of Duty: Warzone, Rocket League, and eFootball. The page is a changing catalog, not a guarantee that every title or highlighted game will remain available in every region.
Choose a game and check its listing
Use the catalog’s genres to narrow your options, then inspect each Xbox product page for details that matter to you. Check the game’s content rating and whether the mode or features you want have specific requirements. The catalog does not provide a complete comparison of age ratings or install sizes, so confirm those details on the individual listing rather than assuming they are the same across games.

What “without Game Pass” does and does not mean
Game Pass is not required simply to find and install a game listed as free-to-play in the Xbox catalog. Xbox presents the free-to-play catalog separately from Game Pass and may promote Game Pass benefits within individual games. Those benefits are distinct from downloading the free-to-play game itself.
Do not assume that every game’s online multiplayer or optional features have identical subscription requirements. The official catalog and digital-games guidance do not establish the online requirements for every title. Check the game’s current product page or Xbox support information for the specific game and mode you intend to use.

Xbox’s digital-games guidance says that a Microsoft Account and valid payment instrument are needed for a purchase. That purchase requirement does not establish that a payment method is required to download a free-to-play game.

If a game does not install
- Confirm the platform: make sure you opened the Xbox console listing, rather than a similarly named Windows version.
- Check the price or free-to-play label: verify the product page identifies the game as free before proceeding.
- Check available storage: downloads need console storage. If there is not enough space, free space and retry; the cited Xbox guidance does not specify a storage-management path.
- Review the game’s requirements: if installation succeeds but a mode or feature is unavailable, consult that title’s current listing or Xbox support guidance for its requirements.
