The fastest reliable gear upgrade in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is to check the armory, weaponsmith, and peddlers whenever the story opens a new settlement, then compare the new item with your vocation, weight, defenses, resistances, and enhancement cost. Buy or loot a piece you can use, equip it through Pause > Equipment, and enhance the item you expect to keep for the next region at a smithy or forge. Gear that remains in your inventory provides no weapon or armor benefits.
Vernworth is an early baseline, while Checkpoint Rest Town is reported to stock stronger equipment. Chests and quests can provide items ordinary merchants do not sell. Because inventories, prices, and progression triggers can vary with story state and updates, treat any location as progression guidance rather than a permanent level-by-level shopping list.

Where to find better weapons and armor
There is no single shop that remains best for the entire game. Equipment quality generally follows the regions and story milestones you have reached, so a newly opened settlement is a reason to inspect its merchants even if your current set still works. Capcom’s official manual states that items and equipment can be bought and sold in shops or from peddlers.

Visit every armory, armor seller, and weaponsmith in a new settlement before leaving. Check both weapons and armor rather than upgrading only one slot: a large weapon improvement can be wasted if your armor has fallen several regions behind, while replacing every piece at once can consume gold needed for enhancements.

Merchant inventory is tied to progression and can differ by region or story state. Capcom also notes that repeated business or improved affinity with a seller may unlock more valuable stock and lower prices. The practical approach is to return to a useful merchant after major story developments instead of assuming the first inventory you saw is final.
Peddlers on the road
Peddlers can offer equipment away from the major settlements. Their stock is worth checking when you pass them, especially if a long trip makes returning to town inconvenient. Compare their asking price and item quality with what you already own; a convenient purchase is not automatically a stronger one.
Regional progression
Use Vernworth as an early comparison point, then inspect later settlements as soon as routes open. Prima Games specifically reports that Checkpoint Rest Town sells stronger gear than Vernworth. That does not make every item there superior for every vocation, but it makes the town a sensible destination when your current weapon or armor is struggling.

Exploration and quest rewards can produce equipment that ordinary vendors do not carry. Search chests in caves, ruins, and other dangerous areas, and inspect reward screens before selling or dismantling anything. Keep a note of the vocation requirement for an unusual item: a reward can be excellent but unusable by your current class.
Item locations and reward contents can change with the game version, and guides do not establish one universal chest route. Treat a named location as a lead to investigate, not a guarantee that every player will receive the same item at the same point in the story.
New Game Plus and post-story progression
Equipment progression continues after the main story through New Game Plus and other post-story content. A current equipment guide also describes a Dark Arisen relic system, but those expansion-specific details are guide-reported rather than confirmed in the official manual. Verify the system, item availability, and rules against the version you are playing before spending rare materials or planning a build around it.
| Acquisition route | When to check it | What it is good for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armory or weaponsmith | Whenever a new settlement opens | Predictable upgrades for the weapons and armor your vocation uses | Stock and prices can depend on story state, seller affinity, region, and updates. |
| Peddler | When encountered during travel | Convenient purchases when returning to town is costly | Do not assume a road seller has better gear than the last settlement. |
| Checkpoint Rest Town | After reaching the area | Reportedly stronger stock than Vernworth | Compare each item with your vocation and current enhancement level. |
| Chest or quest reward | During exploration and missions | Unique or otherwise unavailable equipment | Locations and rewards can vary by version; check vocation compatibility. |
| New Game Plus and post-story content | After finishing the main story | Continued equipment progression | Late-game and Dark Arisen details in current guides are version-specific and not all are official. |
How to decide whether a piece is actually better
A higher number in one stat is not enough to make an item the right purchase. Compare the complete loadout and the enemies you expect to face next. The following checks prevent most expensive mistakes.
1. Confirm vocation and weapon type
Start with compatibility. A weapon that your current vocation cannot use is not an upgrade, regardless of its attack value. Armor and clothing also have vocation restrictions. If the item is not selectable in the relevant equipment slot, stop comparing its statistics until you confirm that your current class can use it.
2. Compare the relevant attack or defense value
For weapons, compare the physical or magical attack values that matter to your vocation and build. For armor, compare defense and any listed resistance or passive benefit. Do not trade away a meaningful resistance merely because the headline defense number is slightly higher.
3. Account for weight
Weight affects how much your character is carrying and can change the practical value of a purchase. A marginal attack or defense gain may not justify a substantial weight increase, particularly when the heavier item also leaves less room for loot and materials. Conversely, a modestly heavier item can be worthwhile if it supplies a major defensive or elemental benefit.
4. Read elemental resistances
Elemental resistance reduces incoming damage of the relevant element. If the next area contains enemies that repeatedly use an element, a piece with suitable resistance can protect you more effectively than a small raw-defense increase. The same principle works offensively: exploiting an enemy’s elemental weakness increases the damage you deal. Compare the resistance profile with the enemies you actually expect to fight rather than choosing a universally “best” set.

- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
5. Include enhancement potential
Two items with similar starting statistics can have different long-term value because their enhancement costs and benefits differ. Check the required gold and materials at a smithy before committing. A cheaper item that can be enhanced immediately may be more useful than a stronger item that consumes rare materials you need for the next region.
6. Price the whole trip
Travel is part of a purchase decision. If a shop is far away, include the time, transport resources, and risk of the journey. A slightly weaker item available nearby can be the rational choice when it lets you continue a quest, while a major upgrade may justify a dedicated visit. Player-placed Portcrystals can make recurring routes practical; their use is covered below.
| Comparison question | Why it matters | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Can my current vocation use it? | Class restrictions can make an otherwise powerful item unusable. | Reject incompatible equipment before comparing other numbers. |
| Is the attack or defense gain meaningful? | Raw values determine basic damage or survivability. | Compare the complete slot, not only the item’s price. |
| What is the weight change? | Heavier gear affects carrying capacity and practical mobility. | Accept extra weight when the defensive or offensive benefit justifies it. |
| Do the resistances match the next enemies? | Resistance reduces incoming elemental damage. | Favor the resistance that answers the encounters you are preparing for. |
| What will enhancement require? | Gold and materials are limited resources. | Check the smithy cost before buying or upgrading. |
| How difficult is the route? | A remote vendor can cost more time and travel resources. | Use a nearby adequate item or establish a practical Portcrystal route. |
How to equip weapons and armor
Buying or finding an item does not activate it. Capcom’s manual explicitly says that weapons and armor must be equipped to provide their beneficial effects, and that the types you can use depend on your current class.
- Open the Pause menu.
- Select Equipment.
- Choose the weapon, armor, or clothing slot you want to change.
- Select an item that the current vocation can use.
- Confirm the change.
- Review the resulting attack, defense, weight, elemental resistances, and any listed passive effects.
Use this procedure after every purchase and chest reward. If you leave the item in your inventory, your character continues receiving the benefits of the item currently occupying that slot. Recheck the loadout after changing vocation, because a previously valid weapon or armor piece may no longer be selectable.

How to upgrade equipment at a smithy or forge
Enhancement consumes gold and specific materials. Better base equipment can require more expensive materials or a higher gold payment, so inspect the cost before confirming rather than assuming every upgrade is affordable.
The enhancement workflow
- Travel to a settlement smithy, armorer, or other forge that offers enhancement.
- Select the weapon or armor category.
- Choose the item you intend to improve.
- Review the required gold and every material listed.
- Check the projected attack, defense, weight, resistance, and any added stat benefit.
- Confirm only after deciding that the item will remain useful through the next region.
- Return to the Equipment screen and verify that the enhanced item is still equipped.
What early enhancement tiers do
Prima Games reports up to three early enhancement tiers at a smithy. Each tier raises weapon damage or armor defense, and some enhancements can also reduce weight or add a stat benefit. The exact result depends on the item and the enhancement path offered by the smithy, so read the preview rather than assuming every tier has the same effect.
PC Gamer reports that enhancement requires gold and specific materials, with costs increasing for better base gear. No reliable player-facing percentage for overall gear-power progression is established, so avoid planning around a fixed damage increase or universal upgrade ratio.
Spend materials in the right order
Upgrade the weapon or armor piece you expect to keep through the next region first. A weapon often deserves priority when it is preventing you from defeating enemies efficiently, while armor can be the better investment when incoming damage is the immediate problem. The correct order depends on the encounters ahead and the material cost shown by the forge.
- Do not exhaust rare materials on equipment you expect to replace at the next settlement.
- Do not buy a marginal upgrade solely because you can afford the base item; reserve gold for its enhancement when the improvement matters.
- After enhancing, check whether the weight changed and whether the new item still fits your carrying plan.
- Keep enough common materials and gold for the next item that has a clear, vocation-compatible improvement.
Choosing between smithing styles or enhancement paths
When a smithy offers more than one style or path, there is no single best choice for every vocation. Select the path whose preview answers your immediate need and whose material cost fits your route.
Choose offensive gains when damage is the bottleneck
Favor the path that increases the attack value you use when enemies are taking too long to defeat or when a vocation relies heavily on weapon damage. Confirm that the increase applies to your weapon’s relevant physical or magical attack and that the required materials are not reserved for a better item arriving soon.
Choose defensive or resistance gains when survival is the bottleneck
Armor enhancement is more valuable when you are being defeated before you can complete encounters. A path that raises defense, reduces weight, or adds a useful resistance can outperform a small raw-defense increase if it matches the next area’s damage pattern.

Choose the efficient path when the item is temporary
If you expect to replace the item shortly, use the least expensive enhancement that produces a noticeable benefit, or skip enhancement and save the materials. A costly maximum tier on a temporary weapon can delay a permanent upgrade in the following region.
Re-evaluate after a vocation change
A path that suited one vocation may be less valuable after changing class. Recheck weapon compatibility, the relevant attack statistic, weight, and resistance rather than carrying an old enhancement plan forward unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Portcrystals to make gear routes practical
The official Dragon’s Dogma 2 manual documents a maximum of ten player-placed Portcrystals. They are useful for linking a town with a weaponsmith, armory, or other vendor you expect to revisit.
A practical route plan
- Identify the settlement that has the stock or smithy you use most often.
- Place a Portcrystal where it shortens repeated trips to that hub, while staying within the ten-crystal maximum.
- Keep another route for a region where you regularly collect materials or quest rewards.
- Before a long expedition, decide whether the expected gear improvement justifies the travel and whether your current route makes returning affordable.
- Move or reassign your limited placements when your progression makes an older hub less useful.
Portcrystals do not make an item compatible with your vocation and do not replace comparing price, weight, resistance, or enhancement cost. They simply reduce the travel burden of a sound shopping or smithing decision.
Why you cannot equip a weapon or armor piece
The most common cause is vocation compatibility. Capcom states that the types of weapons and armor you can use depend on your current class. An item can therefore appear in your inventory yet remain unavailable in the slot you selected.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Open Pause > Equipment and select the intended slot, rather than trying to activate the item from a general inventory view.
- Check whether the item is a weapon, armor, or clothing piece for that slot.
- Confirm that your current vocation can use the item’s type.
- If you recently changed vocation, test the equipment screen again because the allowed types may have changed.
- After confirming compatibility, equip the item and verify the attack, defense, weight, and resistance values changed as expected.
If the item remains unavailable after these checks, do not sell it immediately. Store it for a vocation that can use it, keep it as a comparison reference, or revisit it after your class changes.
Simple gear plans by stage of the story
Early game: replace obvious gaps
- Use your first settlements to establish a baseline for each weapon and armor slot.
- Buy only equipment your current vocation can use.
- Enhance the weapon or armor piece with the clearest benefit before spending on small sidegrades.
- Inspect chests and quest rewards before selling anything unusual.
Mid-game: shop regionally and specialize for encounters
- Check the merchants in every newly opened settlement, including Checkpoint Rest Town when available.
- Compare resistance profiles with the enemies expected in the next area.
- Keep materials for an item that can survive the next region instead of maximizing a temporary set.
- Use peddlers and Portcrystals to reduce unnecessary return trips.
Late game: preserve flexibility
- Track which pieces remain useful after a vocation change.
- Reserve rare materials for equipment with a long-term role.
- Evaluate post-story and New Game Plus options against the current game version.
- Treat expansion-specific relic systems described by third-party guides as version-dependent until confirmed in your installation.
Common mistakes that waste gold or materials
Buying by price alone
An expensive item is not automatically better for your vocation. Check compatibility, attack or defense, weight, resistances, and the cost of bringing it to a useful enhancement tier.
Upgrading before checking the next settlement
If a new region is about to open, a high-cost enhancement on current gear may be replaced immediately. Make a major investment when the item will carry you through the next stretch, not merely because the forge menu is available.
Ignoring elemental matchups
Raw defense and attack do not describe every encounter. Resistance can reduce incoming elemental damage, and exploiting an enemy weakness can increase your damage. Build for the threats you are actually preparing to face.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Leaving the upgrade unequipped
Enhancement changes the item, but it does not guarantee that the item occupies the slot you are using. Reopen the Equipment menu after forging and confirm the upgraded piece is active.
Treating a guide’s location list as permanent
Vendor stock, prices, and progression triggers can change with story state or updates. Use guide-reported locations as directions, then verify the actual inventory in your game.
A repeatable checklist for every gear upgrade
- Reach a new settlement or find a peddler.
- Inspect all relevant weapon and armor vendors.
- Compare only items your current vocation can use.
- Check attack or defense, weight, elemental resistances, and passive effects.
- Inspect chests and quest rewards before selling alternatives.
- At a smithy, review gold and material requirements and the projected enhancement result.
- Enhance the item you expect to keep through the next region.
- Equip it through Pause > Equipment.
- Recheck the final statistics and decide whether a Portcrystal placement will make future visits worthwhile.
This process keeps upgrades tied to your vocation and upcoming encounters instead of to a single headline number. It also protects rare materials and limits travel while still letting you take advantage of stronger regional stock, exploration rewards, and post-story progression.
