Grand Theft Auto III has two principal original cover designs. The European/PAL release kept the early, action-packed single-scene montage. North American packaging was revised into separate illustrated panels around the Grand Theft Auto logo, a layout that became the series’ signature cover style. To identify a physical copy, establish its region and platform first, then compare the front composition, rating mark, logos, spine, barcode and back-cover layout rather than judging the image alone.
The short answer: there are two main GTA III cover designs
When collectors ask for the “original” GTA 3 cover, they are usually comparing two legitimate retail designs rather than a genuine box with a counterfeit replacement. The first is the crowded, action-packed montage used for the European release. Characters, vehicles, weapons and other scenes are blended into one illustrated composition. It is often described as the UK, European or PAL cover.

The second is the revised North American design. Instead of one continuous scene, it places individual characters, vehicles and moments in separate panels around the Grand Theft Auto III logo. This panel or grid arrangement became the recognizable visual template for later entries in the series.
Both designs can be authentic. “Original” generally means the earlier artwork concept, while “revised” describes the North American packaging change. Region, not artistic quality or seller terminology, is the decisive first clue.

Why the North American packaging was revised
Rockstar Games explained the change in its official 2011 GTA III Q&A. The company said: “The biggest change was the US packaging which remixed the previous packaging into what became our signature style – because the previous packaging [which was released as the cover of the game in Europe] was, we felt, too raw after 9/11.”
This statement establishes three points that are easy to lose in online listings:
- The earlier action montage was released as the European cover.
- The United States package was remixed rather than simply receiving a different regional rating sticker.
- Rockstar connected the redesign to its post-9/11 judgment that the earlier image felt too raw for the US market.
The revised panel layout was therefore a deliberate packaging decision, not evidence that one region received an unofficial or incomplete version. The redesign also introduced a visual system that Rockstar continued to use as a signature style.

How to identify the artwork on a PS2 copy
Use the following procedure when a listing, flea-market copy or inherited collection piece is described only as “original GTA 3.” It is designed for a physical PS2 case, but the same logic works for PC, Xbox and later platform editions.
1. Photograph or scan the complete package
Before removing anything, capture the front, spine, back, disc and manual. Keep the case open enough to show the inner edge and any printed identifiers. A front-only photograph can hide a swapped insert, a regional reprint or a replacement case.
Record the platform name, region marks, catalogue or product number, barcode, disc label and manual language. These identifiers are more useful than a seller’s use of “first print” or “rare original,” neither of which is a standardized description.
2. Establish the market region
Look for the strongest regional clues on the front and back:
- A North American PS2 package normally displays an ESRB rating box. The ESRB entry for the North American game is M for Mature 17+, with Blood, Strong Language and Violence.
- European/PAL material may show a country-specific or regional rating mark, multilingual legal text and PAL-oriented product information.
- Do not infer region from the language of the game title alone. A case can have an English title while being sold in several European markets.
- Check the spine and back panel as well as the front. A replacement front insert can be paired with a genuine disc from another region.
Region is the first filter because the principal design split follows North American versus European packaging. Platform and release date still need to be checked afterward.
3. Identify the composition, not just the colors
On the original European design, look for one uninterrupted illustrated scene in which the people, vehicles, weapons and action share the same visual field. The image reads as a montage, but it does not use the later series-style grid of framed panels.

On the revised North American design, look for distinct illustrated sections. Individual characters, cars and scenes occupy separate panels around the Grand Theft Auto III wordmark. The boundaries and changes of scale are intentional: the cover is assembled from multiple vignettes rather than one continuous action tableau.

A faded or overexposed panel cover may look flatter, while a dark photograph of the European art may make separate elements appear joined.
4. Verify the logo and platform marks
Compare the position and treatment of the Grand Theft Auto III logo with a known scan from the same region and platform. Then check the PlayStation 2, PC or Xbox branding, publisher/developer marks and any regional legal text. A correct illustration paired with the wrong platform logo is not evidence of a matching original package; it may be a custom insert or a later adaptation.
Platform branding also helps explain apparently conflicting images. A PS2 cover and a PC cover can share a regional design language while differing in dimensions, logo placement or legal copy. Treat each platform as its own edition when documenting a collection.
5. Inspect the spine and barcode
The spine should agree with the front’s region and platform. Check the title, platform logo, publisher mark and catalogue information. On the back, compare the barcode area, rating panel, screenshots, legal copy and layout. A seller may display an original-looking front while using a replacement back insert, and a genuine disc can be stored in a non-matching case.

Use it as one consistency check alongside the region, platform, rating and printed design.
6. Compare images at the same crop and scale
When using online scans or your own photographs, crop the same physical area and view both images at comparable size. Check:
- Whether the art is a single scene or a panel arrangement.
- The position of the Grand Theft Auto III logo.
- The characters, vehicles and action elements selected.
- Color palette and background treatment, while allowing for lighting and print fade.
- Rating box size and location.
- Platform, publisher and developer marks.
- Spine width, barcode placement and back-cover copy.
Do not compare a full European case scan with a tightly cropped US front image. Different aspect ratios can make a panel edge disappear and create a false match.
7. Record the result with qualifying details
A useful collection note says, for example, “European/PAL PS2 case, original action montage, country rating mark, barcode and spine recorded,” or “North American PS2 case, revised panel montage, ESRB M box, barcode and back insert photographed.” This is more precise than writing only “original cover.” Include the source country when it is known and identify whether the item is a first retail release, a reprint or a later platform edition only when the physical evidence supports that conclusion.
What the two designs look like in practice
The European/PAL action montage
The European design is best recognized by its unified scene. The artwork brings multiple GTA III ingredients together: people, cars, weapons and motion are composed as one large illustration. Elements may overlap or sit at different depths, but they belong to the same visual field.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Listings often call this the “UK cover” because UK scans are easy to find, yet “European” or “PAL” is the safer description when the exact country is unknown. Rating symbols, legal text and language panels can differ among European territories even when the principal illustration is shared.
The North American panel montage
The North American design breaks the image into discrete panels. Each vignette can show a different character, vehicle or action moment, with the Grand Theft Auto III logo acting as the organizing center. This structure is the visual hallmark Rockstar later used for the series’ cover identity.
A panel cover can still be an early retail copy. “Revised” refers to the artwork change relative to the European action montage, not automatically to a later manufacturing run. The ESRB box and North American legal information provide stronger regional evidence than the word “revised” in a marketplace title.
Region, platform and reissue pitfalls
“Original” is not the same as “North American first print”
Collectors use “original” in at least two ways: the earlier artwork concept, or an early copy from a particular country and manufacturing run. In this case, the earlier artwork is the action montage retained in Europe, while the North American launch package used the revised panels. State which meaning you intend when buying or cataloguing.
PAL is a useful clue, not a complete authentication
PAL identifies the television and distribution family used by many European releases, but it does not by itself prove a particular country, print run or cover condition. Confirm the rating, language information, barcode and publisher marks. A PAL disc in a generic case does not establish that the case insert is the original European artwork.
Do not merge platform editions
PS2, PC and Xbox packaging can differ in dimensions, branding and legal information. The research-backed comparison establishes the principal regional cover distinction, but it does not establish that every platform reprinted the same front at every date. Label your records with both region and platform.
Later reprints can alter the package
Later reissues may reuse or modify front artwork. Changes can include rating placement, publisher marks, legal text, barcode, screenshots or the spine. A panel design with a later-looking insert is not automatically counterfeit, and an action montage in a replacement case is not automatically a first European release. Photograph the disc and manual identifiers before assigning a date or rarity claim.
Using reliable visual references
Start with Rockstar’s official GTA III anniversary material and its official 2011 Q&A. The anniversary material documents printed posters featuring the North American and European cover designs, while the Q&A explains the regional packaging decision. These sources establish the historical relationship between the two principal designs.
For image-finding, the iGrandTheftAuto archive has entries labeled “PS2 Box Art (original),” “Alternate Box Artwork (UK Cover Art),” and “Alternate Box Artwork.” Treat those labels as scan-finding aids, not as a substitute for checking the complete physical package. Cross-check the archive images against Rockstar’s descriptions and against the region, platform and rating information printed on the item you own.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board database is useful for confirming the North American rating details. It identifies the game as M (Mature 17+) and lists Blood, Strong Language and Violence. A visible ESRB box supports a North American identification, but it cannot by itself prove that the surrounding insert is an untouched first issue.

A detailed visual-forensics checklist
Use this checklist when two photographs look similar or when a listing supplies only a partial view:
Recommended Free Tools
- Scene structure: Is the illustration one continuous action montage, or are there clear panels with separate vignettes?
- Logo location: Does the Grand Theft Auto III wordmark sit within a single scene or organize a panel grid?
- Element boundaries: Do characters and vehicles share one background, or do they appear in framed or sharply separated sections?
- Regional rating: Is there an ESRB M box, a European rating symbol or no visible rating because the crop is incomplete?
- Platform: Does the cover say PlayStation 2, PC or Xbox, and does that match the disc?
- Publisher/developer marks: Are the marks consistent with the region and platform?
- Spine: Does the spine title, logo and catalogue information match the front?
- Barcode: Is the barcode present and printed as part of the insert rather than added on a sticker?
- Back panel: Do screenshots, legal copy, rating information and layout agree with the claimed edition?
- Physical condition: Could fading, glare, a replacement case or a reprinted insert be changing what the photograph shows?
No single visual clue should overrule every other clue. A convincing identification is a consistent set of region, platform, composition and physical identifiers.
How to document a copy for a collection or sale
- Assign an inventory number. Use a neutral identifier rather than “rare original” in the filename or spreadsheet.
- Capture all sides. Photograph the front, back, spine, disc, manual and inner case markings in even light.
- Write the region and platform first. For example, “North American PS2” or “European/PAL PS2,” if the marks support that description.
- Describe the artwork separately. Record “single-scene action montage” or “panel/grid montage,” not just “original” or “US cover.”
- Transcribe identifiers. Preserve the barcode, catalogue number, disc text and rating information exactly as printed.
- Note uncertainties. If the case or insert may be a replacement, say so instead of assigning an unsupported print-run claim.
- Keep reference images with the record. Save the comparison crop and identify whether it came from Rockstar’s anniversary material, the official Q&A context or an archive scan.
This record lets another collector understand what was actually inspected and prevents a regional artwork difference from being mistaken for a counterfeit.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the panel design as fake because it is different
The North American panel montage is an official redesign and was the launch packaging for that market. A different composition is expected when comparing it with the European action montage.
Mistake: calling every action montage a UK first print
The action montage is associated with the European release, but country, platform and manufacturing run still need to be established. Use “European/PAL action montage” when the exact country is not documented.

Mistake: judging authenticity from the front cover alone
Replacement inserts and mixed-region cases are common sources of confusion. Check the spine, back, disc, manual, barcode and legal marks together.
Mistake: using color as the primary test
Scanners, camera white balance, sun exposure and paper aging change color. Composition, panel boundaries and logo placement are more reliable.
Mistake: assuming a later reissue must use the launch artwork
Later reprints can reuse or modify the front. Record the edition evidence you can see and avoid claiming a first print without matching physical identifiers.
A quick decision path
- If the cover is a single, crowded action scene, check for European/PAL markings and describe it as the original European action montage when the other identifiers agree.
- If the cover is made of separate panels around the logo, check for North American markings, especially the ESRB M box, and describe it as the revised North American panel montage when the package is consistent.
- If the artwork and regional marks disagree, stop at “mixed or replacement packaging” until the disc, manual, spine and back insert are examined.
- If the platform is unclear, do not compare it with a PS2 reference as though all editions were identical; identify the platform first.
Posters and reproductions
Rockstar’s anniversary materials document printed GTA III posters featuring both the North American and European cover designs. That makes “Grand Theft Auto III poster” a legitimate collecting search, but a poster is not proof of the region or print run of a game case. Verify the seller’s photographs, dimensions, printing information and condition separately from the box-art question.

Reproductions can also be useful for display, but label them as reproductions in your collection notes. Do not remove an original insert from a complete case merely to create a cleaner comparison photograph; document the item in place and use a separate scan or reference image for side-by-side analysis.
What to remember
The European/PAL release retained GTA III’s original action-packed montage. North American packaging used a revised panel/grid montage, and Rockstar said the earlier design felt too raw for the US after 9/11. When identifying a copy, match the artwork to the region, platform, rating mark, logos, spine, barcode and back-cover layout. Those combined checks distinguish the two authentic designs from a swapped insert or a later reissue far more reliably than the seller’s use of “original.”
