Choose Nike running shoes by matching the shoe to your running surface and purpose, then compare fit, cushioning, and support. Nike positions Structure for supportive cushioning, Pegasus for responsive cushioning, and Vomero for maximum cushioning—but those are family labels, not independent test rankings. Start with a shortlist, then check the exact model’s fit notes and specifications.
Start with where and why you run
Pick the category that matches your route and the job you need the shoe to do. Nike distinguishes road shoes, trail shoes, and specialized racing shoes in its running-shoe guide.
- Road running: Consider road models for pavement and other hard, relatively even surfaces.
- Trail running: For uneven off-road terrain, look for trail-specific traction and durability. Nike’s trail-running guide emphasizes stability, traction, and fit on uneven ground.
- Racing: Racing shoes are specialized and generally lighter, but Nike notes tradeoffs in durability and shock absorption. Consider them for race day or speed-focused running rather than assuming they are the right choice for all training.
Terrain and intended use are a better starting point than appearance. A shoe meant for a different surface or role may not suit your regular routes.
Check fit before choosing a cushioning style
Nike’s general fit guidance is to leave about a thumb’s width in front of the toes, allow the toes to move without pressure points, and have a secure heel that does not pinch. These are checks to try on the shoe, not a universal sizing formula. Fit can vary by model, so read the listing for the exact shoe and try it on if possible.

Read specifications in their model and size context
The Structure 26 men’s product page lists approximate weight of 320 g (11.3 oz) for a men’s US 10 and a 10 mm heel-to-toe drop. Those figures describe that model and stated size, not a category average or a valid weight comparison with shoes measured in different sizes. The page also describes ReactX foam and a midfoot support system.

Consider support without treating it as a diagnosis
Nike’s guide associates stability shoes with overpronation and neutral shoes with a neutral gait; the Structure 26 page describes a guided, steady ride. Use those descriptions to understand how Nike characterizes its shoes, not to diagnose your gait or predict injury outcomes. A shopping guide cannot establish that a shoe will prevent or treat an injury. If you have persistent pain or a medical concern, ask a qualified health professional.

Use the Shoe Finder to build a shortlist
- Open Nike’s Running page and select the Nike Running Shoe Finder.
- Answer its questions about your running style to get suggested shoes. Treat the result as a shortlist, not a final fit decision.
- Open each candidate’s current product listing and verify its intended surface, model-specific features, sizing or fit notes, and available widths.
- Try the shoe on where possible and check toe room, heel security, and pressure points before deciding.
Jason Fitzgerald, a USATF-certified running coach and owner of Strength Running, is quoted in Nike’s running-shoe guidance saying: “Only experience and a lot of trial and error will help runners understand their preferences and the type of shoe they prefer.” Use recommendations to narrow the field, but let comfortable fit and your own preferences guide the final choice.
