The best scenic train journey in the United States depends on the landscape you want and how much time you have. Choose the California Zephyr for a multi-day mountain-and-canyon crossing, the Coast Starlight for Pacific scenery, the Empire Builder for northern mountains and park country, or the Southwest Chief for desert and historic Southwest landscapes. For a shorter, attraction-focused day, look at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad or Grand Canyon Railway.

Book through the operating railroad or an official package seller. Before paying, compare daylight timing, accommodation, station transfers, seasonal operation, weather policies, park closures and cancellation rules for your exact dates. A route name alone does not tell you what the experience will be.

Start with the landscape and trip shape

Scenic rail travel falls into two different categories. Scheduled intercity trains are long-distance transportation products that can take several days and connect cities along a fixed route. Dedicated scenic railroads are usually excursions built around a particular mountain, river, canyon or historic train. Decide which format fits your trip before comparing tickets.

  • Choose a multi-day intercity route if you want a cross-country journey, overnight travel, city-to-city transportation, or the option to add hotels and tours.
  • Choose a dedicated excursion if the train ride itself is the attraction and you want a same-day or short outing with a defined scenic segment.
  • Choose a park-access itinerary if the train is one part of a larger visit and station transfers, park transport and opening dates matter as much as the view from the carriage.

For a first decision, write down one primary priority—coast, mountains, desert, fall color, national-park access, historic equipment or a short excursion—and one practical limit, such as available days or your departure region. That prevents you from selecting a famous route that is wrong for your schedule.

Compare the major scenic Amtrak routes

These four routes are the most useful starting points for a scheduled, multi-day scenic journey. The descriptions reflect how Amtrak and Amtrak Vacations position the routes; actual views depend on the direction, date and daylight hours of your trip.

Route Principal scenery Best fit Planning points
California Zephyr Rocky Mountain and canyon landscapes between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area, via Denver Travelers who rank mountain and canyon scenery above a coastal experience Consider the full Chicago–Bay Area journey or a Denver–Emeryville segment when time is limited; check which portions fall in daylight
Coast Starlight Pacific inlets and cliffs, plus West Coast peaks and valleys, linking Seattle, Portland, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Travelers who want coastal scenery with major West Coast city access Amtrak promotes a Sightseer Lounge for viewing; select the segment and direction that put the coastline in daylight
Empire Builder Northern-tier mountain ranges, national-park areas, glaciers and Pacific Northwest forests Travelers interested in northern landscapes and park-area connections Daylight timing and station connections are central to the experience; verify each transfer before booking
Southwest Chief Midwest-to-Southwest scenery, including desert and high-desert country and historic Southwestern landscapes Travelers drawn to arid scenery, regional history and a cross-country route Check the exact segment and daylight hours rather than assuming the entire route has the same view

California Zephyr: strongest for mountains and canyons

The California Zephyr runs between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area through Denver and the Rockies. It is the clearest choice when your visual priority is a sustained mountain-and-canyon journey rather than ocean views. A full-route ticket creates a major cross-country trip; a Denver–Emeryville itinerary can concentrate your limited time on the western mountain and canyon portions without committing to the entire crossing.

When comparing dates, identify the daytime portions on the timetable and verify whether your planned direction places the most dramatic terrain outside overnight hours. If an overnight segment is unavoidable, compare departure dates rather than assuming every day produces the same balance of light and darkness.

Coast Starlight: Pacific inlets, cliffs and viewing space

The Coast Starlight links Seattle, Portland, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Amtrak describes rugged Pacific inlets and cliffs along the route and promotes a Sightseer Lounge for viewing West Coast peaks and valleys. Amtrak’s California routes page says the train is “consistently rated one of America’s most scenic train trips,” a description of its reputation rather than a guarantee that every departure will have clear weather or daylight along the coast.

Use the route when coastal scenery is the deciding factor, then examine the timetable for the specific city pair. A shorter segment may provide better daylight than a full end-to-end booking, while a longer itinerary adds more varied landscapes and city options.

Empire Builder: northern mountains and park country

Amtrak Vacations describes the Empire Builder as passing mountain ranges, national parks, glaciers and Pacific Northwest forests. It suits travelers who want a northern-tier landscape and are willing to plan around connecting stations. Because the route combines remote scenery with onward travel, a beautiful rail segment can still become a poor itinerary if a station transfer is too tight or a connecting service runs on a different schedule.

Map every connection before purchase. Confirm the station name—not just the city—and check whether the park or town you intend to visit has a shuttle, rental-car connection or other ground transport on your travel date.

Southwest Chief: desert, high desert and historic Southwest

The Southwest Chief is a major cross-country route through the Midwest and Southwest. It is a good match for travelers who value desert and high-desert scenery, broad Southwestern landscapes and historic context more than alpine or coastal views.

The route’s visual character changes substantially by segment. Select the precise origin and destination, then compare the scheduled daylight hours for that section. Do not book solely because the route is labeled “Southwest”; the segment you ride determines how much of the scenery you actually see.

Shorter dedicated scenic railroads

Excursion railroads make the train the destination. They generally offer a choice of service class and a defined operating season, so the booking questions differ from those for an intercity train.

Railroad Route and setting 2026 operating information Ticket choices
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad San Juan Mountains along the Animas River Steam excursions are listed for May 2 through November 1, 2026 Published fares range from $108 to $313; options include round-trip, one-way, and steam/bus combinations
Grand Canyon Railway Williams, Arizona, to Grand Canyon National Park The National Park Service says service operates throughout the year, weather permitting Reserve through the railway’s official reservation channel and verify current park and station information

Durango & Silverton

The Durango & Silverton route follows the Animas River through the San Juan Mountains. The railroad’s 2026 information lists a May 2–November 1 steam season and fares from $108 to $313. Those are published fare points for the stated 2026 season, not a universal price for every class, date or inventory level.

Choose among a round trip, a one-way train, or a steam-and-bus combination according to how you plan to return. A one-way ticket can work when your ground transportation is arranged at the other end; a round trip is simpler when the train is the entire day’s activity. Read the service description carefully so you know which legs use steam equipment and which use a bus connection.

Grand Canyon Railway

Grand Canyon Railway connects Williams, Arizona, with Grand Canyon National Park. The National Park Service states that the service runs throughout the year, weather permitting, and directs visitors to the railway’s reservation system and telephone information. Treat “year-round” as an operating goal, not a promise that every departure will run: weather, maintenance and park conditions can change the schedule.

Book the train and then check the park’s current information separately. Confirm the arrival point, time available in the park, return departure and any local shuttle or entrance requirements before selecting a date.

Use daylight as a booking variable

Scenery is only useful when you are awake, looking out and on the side of the train with the relevant view. Treat daylight as a core booking variable rather than an afterthought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Identify the scenic portion of the route on a map.
  • Compare the timetable with local sunrise and sunset for your travel date.
  • Check both travel directions; the same route can place a major landscape in daylight in one direction and darkness in the other.
  • Allow for seasonal changes. A departure that gives afternoon mountain views in summer may run through the same section after dark in another month.
  • Re-check the schedule shortly before departure because operational changes can alter arrival and departure times.

On routes that offer a designated viewing area, read the current onboard description. The Coast Starlight’s Sightseer Lounge is specifically promoted for viewing peaks and valleys. A compact 8×32 or 10×32 binocular can help with distant cliffs, wildlife and shoreline details without taking much room in a seat or lounge.

Book a scenic train trip step by step

  1. Define the experience. Choose coast, mountains, desert, northern forests, a canyon, a national-park connection or historic equipment. Decide whether the ride should be a day excursion or part of a multi-day journey.
  2. Choose a route and segment. Start with the operator’s route map. Compare the full route with a shorter city pair, such as Denver–Emeryville on the California Zephyr, when your available time is limited.
  3. Check the departure region and ground access. Confirm how you will reach the station, whether overnight parking or local transit is available, and how you will continue from the arrival station.
  4. Open the official calendar for your exact dates. Look for seasonal operation, engineering notices, weather policies, park closures and station-specific advisories before selecting a train.
  5. Choose accommodation and viewing access. Compare coach and sleeping accommodation on an intercity route. Check whether the train offers a lounge or observation area and whether dining is included, sold separately or unavailable on your chosen segment.
  6. Decide between a rail ticket and a package. A point-to-point ticket gives you control over hotels and stopovers. An official package can combine rail, sleeping accommodation, hotel nights, tours, activities and meals.
  7. Save the confirmation. Keep the reservation number, station names, departure time and policies offline as well as in your email or app.
  8. Re-check before travel. Verify the departure time, station, transfer arrangements, weather conditions and any park or attraction closure shortly before leaving for the station.

Point-to-point tickets versus packages

Neither format is automatically better. The right choice depends on how much coordination you want to do yourself.

Decision factor Point-to-point rail ticket Official package
Control You select the rail segments and arrange hotels, tours and local transport separately The seller can bundle rail with selected hotels, tours, activities and meals
Stopovers Often easier to design around your own overnight stops, subject to fare and schedule rules Follow the package’s included structure; confirm where independent time is allowed
Coordination You are responsible for station transfers and matching every reservation Some logistics are assembled for you, but you must read the package inclusions and change rules
Starting points Use the stations available for the specific train and date Amtrak Vacations says its packages can start from more than 500 Amtrak stations
Changes and cancellations Apply the rail operator’s fare rules and each separately booked supplier’s policy Check the package’s combined terms; rail, hotels and activities may have different conditions

Read the cancellation and change rules before paying. Compare the total cost, not just the rail fare: include sleeping accommodation, hotel nights, meals, excursions, transfers and the value of any stopover flexibility you give up.

National parks, station access and interpretation

Using a train to reach a park

A train station near a national park is not the same as a park entrance. Confirm the distance, ground transportation, operating dates and the amount of time between train arrival and your planned activity. Park roads, shuttles, visitor facilities and trails can have separate seasonal schedules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Grand Canyon Railway, start with the Williams–Grand Canyon connection and then review current National Park Service information for closures, weather and local transportation. The railway’s year-round, weather-permitting service does not eliminate the need to check park conditions.

Trails & Rails interpretation

National Park Service Trails & Rails programs place volunteers on selected Amtrak trains to share stories about parks, landmarks and places of interest. The program publishes a 2026 operating schedule. Participation is limited to selected trains and dates, so treat it as a possible enhancement rather than a guaranteed feature of every trip.

Use current National Park Service station pages and park information when planning. Those pages are where closures, time changes and local advisories are most likely to affect your itinerary.

Build an itinerary around your available time

When you have several days

Compare the full California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder or Southwest Chief route with the cities you actually want to visit. A long-distance train can serve as transportation between overnight stops, but every added stop introduces another station transfer, hotel check-in and opportunity for a schedule mismatch. Choose fewer, better-connected stops when scenery is the main purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you have limited time

Use a scenic segment instead of forcing a full cross-country trip. The Denver–Emeryville portion of the California Zephyr is an example of narrowing the itinerary around a mountain-and-canyon priority. On the Coast Starlight, choose a city pair that puts the coastal portion you care about in daylight. On the Empire Builder or Southwest Chief, select the segment whose landscape matches your goal and verify its daytime placement.

When the train itself is the attraction

Select a dedicated excursion such as Durango & Silverton or Grand Canyon Railway. Check the operating calendar first, then choose round-trip or one-way transportation, class of service, layovers and return logistics. This format reduces the number of cities involved but makes the operating season and weather policy especially important.

Understand passes and multi-segment travel

Amtrak’s January 16, 2026 USA Rail Pass announcement describes 10 trip segments within 30 days and lists the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder and Southwest Chief among eligible routes. Use the pass only after reading the current terms and confirming that each planned segment qualifies. A “segment” is a pass-defined portion of travel, so do not assume that every stopover or train change counts the way you expect.

“With ten trip segments in 30 days, the USA Rail Pass offers travelers the freedom to discover our nation’s historic destinations, scenic routes, and cultural hubs at their own pace, while avoiding the stress of flying or driving.”

A pass can suit an open-ended itinerary, while a conventional ticket may be simpler when you know the exact dates and route. Compare the pass’s reservation requirements, blackout or availability rules, accommodation charges and change conditions with the total of individual bookings.

Compare the details that change the experience

After you identify a likely route, use the same checklist for every option:

  • Total elapsed time: Include station waits, overnight periods and any required ground transfer.
  • Scenic daylight: Mark the exact landscapes you want and determine when they appear on the timetable.
  • Accommodation: Compare coach seating with sleeping accommodations for overnight portions.
  • Viewing space: Check for a lounge or observation area and learn whether access is shared or restricted by the service type.
  • Dining: Confirm what food service is offered on your train and whether meals are included in a package or accommodation.
  • Stopover flexibility: Determine whether you can break the journey and resume later under the fare or pass rules.
  • Transfer risk: Give yourself a practical margin when changing trains, buses or local transport.
  • Cancellation and change rules: Read the operator’s current conditions for the exact fare, date and package.
  • Season and weather exposure: Verify whether the railroad runs in your chosen month and how weather can affect operation.

Pre-departure checklist

  • Confirm the exact station name and address for every departure and connection.
  • Check the operator’s latest departure time and any engineering or service notice.
  • Review weather forecasts for mountain passes, canyons, coastal sections and the destination park.
  • Verify park hours, shuttle operation, closures and any reservation requirement.
  • Save rail, hotel, tour and transfer confirmations together.
  • Pack a compact 8×32 or 10×32 binocular if distant scenery matters to you.
  • Bring a current U.S. scenic train travel guide if you want historical and geographic context away from the onboard commentary.
  • Allow extra time to reach the station, especially when the departure city has multiple stations or a transfer is involved.

Common booking problems and fixes

The scenic train is sold out

Try nearby dates, a shorter segment or a different direction. Check the official calendar rather than relying on a third-party availability page, and consider whether a package has separate inventory from a point-to-point fare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The timetable puts the best scenery at night

Change the direction, travel date or segment. If the route is fixed, decide whether sleeping accommodation is worth paying for the dark portion and reserve a daytime excursion for the landscape you most want to see.

A connection leaves too little margin

Choose a later connection or an itinerary with fewer transfers. Reconfirm whether the connecting station is the same physical location and whether a bus connection is included or must be booked separately.

Weather threatens a mountain or canyon segment

Read the railroad’s weather policy and identify what happens if service is delayed or canceled. Keep park and hotel reservations flexible when the train is the only practical way to reach the destination.

A park is closed after you book

Check the National Park Service and station information immediately. Ask the operator or package seller about permitted changes, then revise the ground-transport and return-train plan rather than assuming the original schedule remains useful.
