To find a weight-inclusive doctor or dietitian, use directories and local referrals to build a shortlist, then verify each person’s credentials, availability, costs, and approach to weight directly with the practice. Terms such as “weight-neutral,” “HAES,” “anti-diet,” and “fat-friendly” can help you search, but they are leads—not guarantees of expertise or a good fit.

Start with several search terms and a specific need

Search the language you might use yourself alongside your location and the type of care you need. For example, try “weight-inclusive primary care [city],” “HAES dietitian [state],” or “weight-neutral dietitian near me.” Other useful terms include “anti-diet” and “fat-friendly.” A clinician may describe practices that suit you without using any of these labels.

Search for the relevant specialty as well as the philosophy: primary care, endocrinology, prenatal care, eating-disorder treatment, or another specific need. Online conversations can reveal phrases people use—such as “weight neutral dietician”—but a social post is not evidence that a provider is qualified or suitable.

Use directories to create a shortlist

Weight-inclusive provider directories

Size Inclusive Health Australia’s Find a Provider directory lets visitors search by state, profession, services, or name. It is specific to Australia. The directory says, “All Size Inclusive Health Australia Verified Providers offer care from a weight-neutral framework consistent with the Health at Every Size principles®.” Its published criteria are useful for understanding what the organization expects of listed providers, but the listing does not guarantee that a particular appointment will match your needs.

Dietitian directories in the United States

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Find a Nutrition Expert directory lists registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered (NDTRs). Search and filter by location, specialty, language, insurance, and payment options. Treat the results as starting points: a directory filter does not confirm a provider’s current availability, your benefits, or their approach to weight.

Eating-disorder treatment directories

If eating-disorder experience or coordinated care is important, the National Eating Disorders Association’s treatment directory includes dietitians, medical doctors, psychiatrists, therapists, and treatment centers. It supports searches by location and virtual care. NEDA identifies two nationwide virtual providers as sponsors; consider that disclosure when evaluating directory results.

Local, insurer, and community leads

  • Check your insurer’s directory for possible in-network clinicians, then confirm participation and coverage with both the practice and insurer.
  • Use professional directories and your jurisdiction’s licensing authority to find or check clinicians in your area.
  • Ask a current clinician, therapist, or trusted local organization for recommendations. HAES Health Sheets’ resources page includes self-advocacy cards and provider-related resources. Treat community lists as leads rather than endorsements.

Check qualifications and fit as separate questions

A credential or license can help establish professional qualification; it does not tell you whether a clinician’s approach, specialty experience, communication, or access arrangements will suit you.

Verify credentials and licensing

In the United States, RD and RDN are credential designations associated with the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s certification program. CDR says recipients meet academic and supervised-practice requirements and pass a registration examination; RD and RDN are legally protected designations. See CDR’s credential use or misuse guidance. Credential and protected-title rules vary by jurisdiction, so use the relevant local credential or licensing channel to check current status.

For U.S. clinicians, the CMS NPI Registry can help you locate records by provider name, specialty, or location. CMS warns: “Issuance of an NPI does not ensure or validate that the Health Care Provider is Licensed or Credentialed.” Use an NPI as an identifier or search aid—not as proof of a license or qualification—and check the appropriate state or jurisdictional licensing authority.

Assess experience, communication, and access

  • Scope and specialty: Does the clinician provide the care you need and have relevant experience?
  • Approach to weight: Do they assume weight loss is a goal, or address your presenting concern and discuss options in context?
  • Your particular needs: If relevant to you, ask about experience with eating-disorder history, chronic conditions, disability, gender-affirming care, pregnancy, or cultural needs.
  • Communication and agency: Do they answer questions clearly, take your priorities seriously, and explain options without shame?
  • Practical access: Check location, telehealth eligibility, appointment availability, language, accessible equipment or facilities, referral rules, fees, and payment options.

Contact the practice before booking

A short call or message can establish whether a promising listing is workable and give you a chance to ask about care philosophy. Adapt the questions below to your goals and medical situation; a particular request may not be clinically appropriate in every circumstance.

  • “How do you approach weight-related concerns when I come in for another health issue?”
  • “Is weight loss assumed to be a goal?”
  • “Can you discuss evidence-based options without making weight the only outcome?”
  • “Can I decline routine weighing or ask for a blind weight when medically appropriate?”

Also ask whether the clinician is accepting patients, serves your location, offers telehealth where you live, accepts your insurance, requires a referral, and can meet practical access needs. Confirm fees and coverage with the practice and your insurer: directory information and benefits can be incomplete or change.

Notice how the office responds. A respectful clinician should be able to explain their approach, listen to your priorities, and discuss options and trade-offs. If the conversation feels dismissive, you can seek another opinion or ask for a referral; you do not need to stop necessary care to look for a better fit.

Compare candidates before choosing

If more than one person looks promising, compare them on the details that matter to you rather than relying on a label or listing alone. There is no single directory or badge that guarantees suitability, and local options may be limited.

What to compare What to establish
Clinical fit Relevant specialty, experience, and ability to provide the care you need.
Weight-related approach Whether weight loss is presumed and how the clinician handles weight discussions in relation to your concern.
Credentials and status Relevant qualification and current license, checked through the appropriate credentialing or licensing channel.
Communication Whether the clinician answers plainly, invites your priorities, and explains choices without shame.
Access and logistics Location, telehealth eligibility, availability, language, accessibility, referral requirements, insurance, fees, and payment options.
