Verify that the person still holds the role, and keep residential details out of the search and correspondence.
How do I contact my representative without using their home address?
- Identify the right level of government. In the United States, start at USAGov’s Find and contact elected officials page. It links to federal, state and territorial, and local officials, including city, county, and town contacts. For state or local government service and office contacts, USAGov’s state and local government page is another official starting point.
- Open the government body’s own contact page. Follow links to the relevant official’s office or agency. Use a channel the government body publishes for public or official correspondence: an office phone, institutional email, contact form, or public office address. A message routed through staff or a central correspondence team is still an appropriate work channel when the agency designates it for public contact.
- Confirm the person and role. Check the name and current position against a current agency, legislature, or chamber page. Look for an update date or signs that the directory is maintained. USAGov’s elected-official guide was updated March 2, 2026, while a House directory result included an older update marker and a September 2023 phonebook. An official-domain page is not necessarily current just because it is on an official website.
- Keep the request focused on the office. If the listed contact appears stale or unclear, contact the agency’s general public contact channel and ask how to reach the office. Do not search for, infer, or circulate the official’s residence address.
Which contact channel should I use?
Choose the channel the government body itself designates for official correspondence. These options differ in how directly they reach an office, but all are preferable to people-search listings or scraped personal profiles for a work-related inquiry.
| Channel | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Office phone | You need to ask a question or confirm the right contact route. | That the number appears on the official body’s current page and belongs to the office, not a residence. |
| Work or institutional email | You need to send a written request or supporting details. | That the address is published by the government body for work contact. |
| Official contact form | The agency or office directs public correspondence through a web form. | That the form is hosted or linked by the official website and is intended for your type of message. |
| Public office mailing address | You need to send a letter to the office. | That it is explicitly identified as an office or agency address, not a residential address. |
How can I tell whether a contact listing is trustworthy?
- Prefer primary sources. Start with an official government directory, then follow through to the agency, legislature, or local government page responsible for the office.
- Match the person to the position. Confirm the current name, title, jurisdiction, and office; similarly named officials can serve different districts or levels of government.
- Check freshness. Use an update date where available. If a phone number or email looks old, ask the agency’s general public contact channel to confirm the current route rather than relying on a third-party listing.
- Check what the channel is for. A work contact method should be published for office or public correspondence. A personal profile or scraped record is not an official office channel.
Why a work contact does not make a home address appropriate
A public office address and a person’s residence address are different kinds of information. Finding an office phone or work email does not establish that a residence address is public, appropriate to use, or safe to disclose. Keep your search and message directed to the official’s work role; do not use property records to infer a home address or repost residential information.
Disclosure rules depend on the jurisdiction, the record, and the person involved. For example, the Texas Secretary of State describes confidentiality protections for residence addresses in voter-registration records for certain officials and other eligible people. Its guidance says a registrar may verify that a protected official lives in a district without disclosing the actual address: Texas Secretary of State voter-registration guidance.

What do privacy rules say about publishing work contact details?
There is no single global rule that makes every public employee’s work contact details disclosable. The rules and policies below illustrate why readers should check the applicable jurisdiction rather than generalize from another place.
- New South Wales: The NSW Information and Privacy Commission’s September 2021 fact sheet on access to information about public officials says that, under the NSW Government Information (Public Access) framework, “non-personal contact details” include a work telephone number, work mobile number, or work email address. It also notes that disclosure considerations include the public interest and exceptional risks such as harm or serious harassment. This is NSW guidance, not a rule for other jurisdictions.
- U.S. Government Publishing Office: Its privacy policy says employee names, work telephone numbers, work email addresses, and other business-related identifying information may be disclosed in the regular course of agency activities when otherwise permitted by law or regulation. That is GPO policy, not a blanket disclosure rule for every U.S. government body.
- Texas: The Secretary of State’s voter-registration guidance describes protections for certain residence addresses in voter-registration records. It concerns specified people and records in Texas, not every official or address in every context.
If the official is outside the United States
Use the relevant country or region’s official government portal, or the official website of the legislature, ministry, department, municipality, or court. The directories cited here are U.S.-focused and do not establish a universal directory. Follow the same practical distinction: seek a contact channel published for the office, verify the official’s current role, and do not substitute a residence address for a work contact.
