For an Android phone, Google Maps Timeline may help you retrace recorded places and routes; for an iPhone, use Apple’s Find My to check its current or last-known location. First try the phone’s built-in locator, because location history is a record of the past—not a guaranteed way to find a phone now. History is useful only if it was recorded and is still accessible.
History or locator: which should you use?
| Tool | What it can show | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps Timeline | Recorded locations, addresses, and routes associated with a Google Account | Retracing where an Android phone may have been on a past date |
| Google Find Hub | Current or last-known location of an Android device, when available | Checking where the phone is now, ringing it, or securing it |
| Apple Find My | Current or last-known location of an Apple device, when available | Checking an iPhone’s location and marking it as lost |
Timeline is not a live locator. For either platform, start with its device-finding service, then use Android Timeline if you need to retrace your steps.
Find an Android phone using Timeline and Find Hub
Check the phone’s Timeline
- Open Google Maps and sign in to the Google Account used on the missing phone.
- Open Timeline and select the date you want to check.
- Review the recorded places, addresses, and routes for clues about where you left the phone.
Timeline can help only if the relevant location records were enabled, recorded, and retained. Google’s Timeline data guidance explains the controls; check the Maps app and account associated with the missing phone rather than assuming its history is available elsewhere. Google says Timeline is saved on the device for users receiving the change, with an optional encrypted cloud backup that Google cannot read. Availability can vary, so check the Timeline interface on the relevant device. Android’s guide to finding an Android phone describes using Timeline to retrace addresses and times.
Check its current or last-known location
- Open Google Find Hub in a browser, or open the Find Hub app on another Android device.
- Sign in with the Google Account associated with the missing phone and select the device.
- Review the map and choose an available action, such as playing a sound or marking the phone as lost.
Google lists requirements for remote actions, including that the device has power, is connected to a Google Account, has Find Hub enabled, and is visible on Google Play. Account and network conditions also matter. If Find Hub cannot get a current position, it may still show a last-known one. Its lost Android device instructions explain the conditions and available actions.

- STAY SAFE WITH SOS: Discreetly trigger an SOS alert to your loved ones in unsafe situations

- FIND YOUR PHONE: Phone hiding under a cushion? Use your Tile to make it ring — even when silenced

Find Hub can ring the phone at full volume for five minutes. If you choose to erase it, the device’s data is permanently deleted; after a factory reset, it is no longer available in Find Hub. Erasing is therefore a serious security decision, not a first step for a phone that may simply be misplaced.
Find an iPhone with Find My
- Open Find My on another Apple device, select the missing iPhone, and check its map.
- If you do not have another Apple device, go to iCloud.com/find and sign in.
- If appropriate, mark the iPhone as lost. This locks it and can display contact details.
Apple says Find My can show a last-known location for up to seven days when it cannot display a current location. After more than seven days without a location sent through the Find My network, it may show “No location found.” If the phone is online but cannot send its location, it may show “Not sharing location • Online.” See Apple’s Find My instructions for a lost Apple device for details.

Apple’s guidance describes device finding, not a Timeline-style history for retracing previous iPhone trips. If you decide to erase the iPhone, understand that the action cannot be undone; try locating and locking it first when circumstances allow.
What to do if the map pin is uncertain
A map pin is an estimate, not proof of the phone’s exact position. Google says location estimates can use GPS, nearby Wi-Fi, and mobile networks; GPS may be inaccurate indoors or underground. A phone shown near a building or street may be somewhere nearby rather than at the precise point marked.

- If the phone seems to be at a familiar, safe place, use the locator’s available ring or lost-device controls to help recover it.
- If the location suggests possible theft, do not confront a suspected thief. Secure the device and account, and contact local authorities as appropriate.
- If no current position appears, check any last-known location and use the relevant history only if records are available.
Why location history may not help
- The wrong account is open: Check the Google Account used on the Android phone before looking at Timeline.
- Records were not available: Timeline depends on location records being enabled and retained for the date in question.
- History is on the phone: Google’s Timeline changes mean users receiving the change may have on-device records and optional encrypted backup; do not assume the web or another device has a complete copy.
- The phone has not sent a location: A locator may show only a last-known position, or no position, depending on its connection and service conditions.
Reduce the chance of losing it again
Check that the platform’s locator is enabled and that you can sign in to the account linked to the phone. For future recovery of a phone case or other personal item, a Bluetooth tracker tag is an optional accessory; it cannot reveal a phone’s past location history or recover a phone that is already missing. Apple describes AirTag as a tracker for personal items in its Find My support information.
