A Wi-Fi analyzer can show which nearby networks your device can see and the channels they appear to use. That makes it a useful clue when troubleshooting—not proof that a crowded channel is causing slow internet. Check the signal strength and band as well as the network count, then compare performance at home before and after changing one router setting.

What a Wi-Fi analyzer can—and can’t—tell you

An analyzer graph is a snapshot of visible access points and their channel positions from where you are standing. It can help you see whether nearby networks cluster on a channel, but it does not measure all radio activity or tell you how much airtime each network is using. A scan also may miss hidden networks and interference from electronics, and neighbors’ activity changes over time. Intel explains these limitations in its channel and width guidance.

So, a count such as 14 nearby networks is meaningful only as a local observation from a particular scan. It is not a general statistic, and it does not establish that all those networks were transmitting on your channel or causing a slowdown. Microsoft likewise recommends checking network performance in different places in the home before changing a channel, rather than relying on a scan alone: Wi-Fi and your home layout.

How to use a scan to choose a channel

On 2.4 GHz, compare channels 1, 6, and 11

Start with your router’s 2.4 GHz network. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the usual choices to compare because they avoid overlapping one another when configured at standard channel widths. Look for a channel with fewer nearby access points, but also consider their signal strengths: a strong nearby network is more relevant than a faint one at the edge of the graph. Channel availability and the best choice can vary with local regulations and equipment. Microsoft and Intel both advise considering channel overlap and nearby signal strength, rather than counting networks alone.

On 5 GHz, compare the channels your router offers

5 GHz provides more channels, so overlap is generally less of an issue than on 2.4 GHz. Choose an available option with fewer nearby access points while considering how strong your own Wi-Fi signal is where you need it. The channels a router exposes vary by region and model; do not assume that a channel shown in an app can be selected on your router. NETGEAR also warns that channel availability is regional in its router channel instructions.

Account for range and walls

Band choice involves a trade-off. Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz as having longer range and better obstacle penetration, with broad device compatibility, but fewer non-overlapping channels and more competition from household devices. 5 GHz generally offers more non-overlapping channels and higher throughput, but has shorter range and weaker penetration through walls. A compatible Wi-Fi 6E router and client can use 6 GHz, which may offer high performance and low congestion near the router, but its reach is shorter. These characteristics do not guarantee a particular result in every home.

Measure before changing anything

First record how the connection performs in several places where you actually use it. Run the same speed test under comparable conditions and note the location, band, download and upload results, and latency if your test reports it. Microsoft recommends gathering readings in multiple locations before making changes and repeating them afterward. A scan alone cannot show that a channel change improved service.

  1. Check the scan in more than one location. Your device sees access points differently depending on where it is; compare the router area with the room where performance is poor.
  2. Record a baseline. Use the same device and test method in the same locations. If possible, avoid comparing results taken at very different times or under different network loads.
  3. Change one relevant setting. If the scan and baseline suggest a channel issue, change the channel for the affected band rather than changing several Wi-Fi settings at once.
  4. Repeat the same tests. Compare the new readings with the baseline. If results do not improve consistently, restore the prior setting or investigate other causes.

Change the channel in your router’s settings

The control depends on the router and its software. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model, and choose only a channel permitted in your region. Your router may have automatic channel selection or may manage settings through an app instead of a browser.

If changing channels does not help

A channel may not be the cause of the problem. Weak signal, walls, router placement, interference from other devices, and changing neighbor activity can all affect reliability. Intel notes that hidden networks and electronics can contribute to interference, so an analyzer picture is not a complete radio-frequency survey.

For a 2.4 GHz connection that remains unreliable despite a strong signal and an apparently clear channel, check the channel width. Microsoft describes 20 MHz and 40 MHz options: 40 MHz can increase throughput, but may work poorly with some older adapters or drivers. Microsoft suggests trying 20 MHz when a strong signal and clear channel still accompany unreliable connections. Make one change at a time and repeat the same tests so you can tell whether it helped.

If coverage is the issue, a less crowded channel may not solve a weak signal in a distant room. Check placement and the connection at the problem location before concluding that the router needs replacement or an extender. If you use an extender, follow its manufacturer’s instructions for coordinating its channel with the router.
