To fact-check a C example, first pin down the C language edition, compiler, platform, and input assumptions behind the claim. Then check language rules against the applicable C standard, implementation-specific claims against that compiler or platform’s documentation, and behavior by compiling and running the complete example. A successful build is evidence about one configuration—not proof that the code is correct, portable, or secure.

1. Turn the article’s claim into something testable

Write down what the example is claimed to do, including its inputs, result, side effects, error handling, and constraints. Separate claims about C syntax or semantics from claims that depend on a compiler, operating system, ABI, library, or hardware. WG14 describes portability as a goal of C while recognizing machine-dependent features, so the execution context matters when assessing a claim. See the WG14 C committee materials.

2. Reconstruct the complete example and its context

Do not test a detached fragment if the article’s claim depends on omitted details. Collect the complete code, required headers, declarations, macros, build commands, dependencies, and setup. Identify the intended C version and implementation. If the article does not say, make the assumption explicit in your review and check whether the code relies on a compiler extension rather than standard C.

For compiler-specific behavior, consult that compiler’s documentation. For example, the GNU C Reference Manual describes C as implemented by GCC; it is relevant evidence for GCC-specific statements, not a substitute for the language standard.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Check each kind of claim against the right authority

Language rules

Use the applicable C standard for normative claims about the language. Distinguish standard-mandated behavior from implementation-defined choices, extensions, and environmental assumptions. A code example that works under one implementation does not establish behavior under every conforming implementation.

Security and reliability recommendations

For security guidance, identify the precise weakness and the conditions under which it occurs, then consult a recognized C secure-coding source. ISO/IEC TS 17961:2013 specifies C secure-coding rules and code examples; ISO lists it as published in November 2013 and last reviewed and confirmed in 2024. The SEI CERT C Coding Standard provides rule descriptions and compliant and noncompliant examples. Its scope centers on C11, with application to earlier versions such as C99 and version differences noted where relevant. CERT also says compliance is necessary but not sufficient for safety, reliability, and security.

Do not present a secure-coding recommendation as a universal language requirement unless the C standard supports that claim. ISO/IEC TR 24772-3:2020 is another reference on how vulnerabilities manifest or can be avoided in C; ISO says its guidance applies to software developed, reviewed, or maintained for any application.

4. Compile with the configuration the claim requires

Compile the complete example in the stated C language mode with the stated compiler. Record the compiler and version, flags, dependencies, and diagnostics. If the article claims portability, test another relevant implementation or say why you did not. WG14 notes that implementations and language-feature support vary; one successful build cannot substantiate a universal portability claim.

A clean build establishes only that the tested compiler accepted the code under the recorded configuration and checks. Warnings or analyzer findings are also bounded evidence. There is no universally sufficient compiler command or warning set established here, so do not label a particular set exhaustive.

If you use runtime instrumentation or a static analyzer, name the tool and the checks enabled. ISO/IEC TS 17961 describes analyzers as checking its specified secure-coding rules; a result against that rule set does not prove every correctness or security property.

6. Assess security and portability as separate questions

A program can compile and produce the expected output in a test while still having a security weakness or depending on nonportable behavior. For security, connect the concern to the relevant CERT C or ISO rule and describe the conditions that trigger it. For portability, identify what the language standard requires and what instead depends on implementation-defined behavior, extensions, or the environment. WG14 treats portability and reducing ambiguity as design principles while recognizing implementation-dependent features.

7. Report reproducible evidence and its limits

A useful fact-check note gives another reader enough information to understand or repeat the check:

  • The complete snippet or the repository revision tested.
  • The compiler and version, C language mode, and platform.
  • The command, flags, dependencies, and analyzer or instrumentation settings.
  • The inputs used and the observed output or side effects.
  • What the check did not cover, including untested implementations, inputs, or properties.

Describe the scope precisely: for example, “compiled with [compiler and version] in [C mode]” is more defensible than “works everywhere.” Report a test result only if that test was actually performed.

How to interpret common evidence

Evidence What it supports What it does not establish by itself
Language-standard text Whether a claim matches the relevant normative C rule. That a particular compiler, platform, or complete program behaves as claimed.
Compiler or platform documentation Behavior or support specific to that documented implementation. Portability to other implementations.
Successful compilation Acceptance by the tested compiler, mode, flags, and dependencies. Runtime correctness, security, or universal portability.
Runtime tests Observed behavior for the tested build and inputs. Behavior for untested inputs, platforms, or execution conditions.
Static analyzer findings or a clean report Findings within the analyzer’s enabled checks and scope. Proof that the program has no defects or is secure.
CERT or ISO secure-coding guidance Relevant security rules and guidance for the conditions they address. A guarantee of safety, reliability, or security from compliance alone.
