A citation marker is not proof: ChatGPT can be wrong, cite material that does not support its wording, or produce fabricated citations and quotations.
Why a citation is not enough
OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can give incorrect or misleading information, sometimes in a confident tone. Known failure modes include incorrect facts and definitions, fabricated quotations, studies and citations, and overconfident answers to ambiguous or complex questions. Treat an answer as a first draft, not as verified fact, and check important claims yourself. OpenAI’s guidance on whether ChatGPT tells the truth explains these limitations.
For answers that use ChatGPT Search, OpenAI also cautions that search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. A source can be relevant to the topic without proving the particular statement attached to it. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search guidance recommends opening citations and checking their support and dates.
How to fact-check a ChatGPT answer
-
Separate the answer into checkable claims
Identify each factual statement that could be confirmed or disproved. Pay closest attention to claims that are consequential, surprising, numerical, technical, or likely to change. Keep compound statements separate: a sentence may contain a date, a figure, and a claim about what caused it, each requiring its own evidence.

Open the cited source and check the exact claim
Follow the citation instead of relying on its marker, title, or search-result snippet. Read the relevant material and ask whether it supports the precise wording ChatGPT used. A page about the same general subject does not necessarily substantiate a particular number, quotation, rule, or conclusion.
-
Confirm who published it and when
Check the publisher and the source’s publication or update date. For information that can change—such as a policy, technical specification, or current event—a once-reliable page may no longer be current. Match the source’s date to the date or period described in the answer.
-
Prefer the responsible or original source
When accuracy matters, look for an authoritative source, such as the original document or the organization responsible for a figure, rule, announcement, or specification. Which source is most authoritative depends on the subject; there is no single source ranking that fits every question.
-
Verify quotations, figures, technical details, and references directly
Find a quotation in the source it is attributed to and check the wording in context. Confirm figures and technical claims against the underlying document or responsible source rather than assuming a related citation proves them. Check references to external documents against the documents themselves.

Mark unsupported or uncertain claims clearly
If a source does not support a claim, is out of date, or cannot be accessed, do not treat the claim as verified. You can ask ChatGPT to search again using a specific source, date, or location, then open and inspect the new result as well. A second search is another lead to check, not a guarantee of correctness.
What to do when a ChatGPT citation fails
- The citation is missing or broken: Search for the named document or organization and verify the claim in the source you find. If you cannot locate suitable evidence, leave the claim unverified.
- The page is relevant but does not say what the answer claims: Do not count it as support. Look for a source that addresses the exact detail, or revise the claim to match what the source actually establishes.
- The source is old: Check for a newer publication or update from the responsible organization, especially when the fact may have changed.
- The source cannot be checked: Say that the claim could not be verified from the available source rather than presenting it as established.
- ChatGPT returns another citation: Apply the same checks to that citation. Search results and citations can still be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.
When is a ChatGPT answer reliable enough to use?
Use a claim as verified only when a source you can inspect directly supports it and is appropriate and current for the context. For high-stakes decisions, rely on authoritative evidence and consult the relevant professional or responsible organization where appropriate. If a claim remains unsupported or uncertain, qualify it, omit it, or find another source before repeating it as fact.
