Extract as soon as your run has achieved its purpose. In DMZ, loot only becomes part of your future inventory when you reach an extraction point and leave successfully. Dying removes nonpermanent items from your Backpack, so the safest profitable run is planned around an exit threshold, a practical exfil route, and enough armor, ammunition, space, and time to survive the trip. Keep the one item you cannot easily replace protected when the current version gives you a Secure slot, then move everything worth keeping into your Stash immediately after extraction.

What “extracting loot” actually means in DMZ

DMZ is an open-world extraction mode. You enter with an Operator, search containers and defeated enemies for items, complete objectives, and call an extraction helicopter at a marked exfil location. The reward is not simply what appears in your Backpack during the match; it is what remains after you successfully leave. The official tactical overview describes the original mode as a single-life experience in which dying causes the loss of all nonpermanent Backpack contents (Call of Duty, 2022).

That rule changes how you should value a find. A rare weapon, mission component, or stack of valuables has no future value if you take an unnecessary fight and die before exfil. Conversely, a modest haul that reaches the Stash can support a later deployment, craft, upgrade, or objective. The practical objective is therefore not “search every building.” It is “secure the item or progress that justified the deployment, then exit with a margin for danger.”

Name the DMZ version before applying a rule

DMZ systems have changed between releases. The 2022 tactical overview covers the original Warzone 2.0-era rules, including Al Mazrah, marked exfils, the final exfil, backpacks, and the loss of nonpermanent items on death. Current 2026 Call of Duty pages describe Modern Warfare 4 DMZ with a Forward Operating Base (FOB), a Stash, a 3D Printer, persistent Operator progression, and Secure backpack slots. A menu label or backpack behavior from one release may not exist in another.

The extraction principles in this guide apply to both descriptions: decide what success means, preserve backpack space, avoid converting a good haul into a needless risk, and offload kept items after a successful exfil. For a specific button location or inventory behavior, use the labels shown by your current release and patch.

Set an exit threshold before opening containers

An exit threshold is a condition that makes the run successful enough to leave. Set it while your risk is low, before a valuable item creates the temptation to continue. A threshold can be one mission item, a rare ingredient, a weapon for the next deployment, a cash target, or a required amount of progression.

Good threshold examples

  • Mission threshold: the named item or objective component required for the current task is in your Backpack.
  • Crafting threshold: you have the ingredient needed for a known recipe or FOB upgrade.
  • Equipment threshold: you found a weapon or gear piece that materially improves your next deployment.
  • Value threshold: you reached the cash or saleable-valuable amount that serves a stated objective.

Once the threshold is met, change your behavior from searching to traveling. You can still pick up a high-value item on the route, but do not treat every unopened container as mandatory. The marginal value of another room must justify the additional exposure to hostile forces, rival Operators, a closing route, or a missed helicopter.

Prepare a run that can actually reach exfil

Choose the objective and route together

Before deployment, identify where the objective is likely to take you and which marked exfil is practical from that area. A distant exfil can turn a successful search into a desperate cross-map sprint. A nearby point may be tactically worse if it is exposed or already contested, so “nearest” means the closest route you can approach with enough cover, supplies, and remaining time.

Reserve space for the item you are seeking

Found items must be manually placed in the Backpack. The Backpack holds weapons, equipment, Cash, and valuables. Entering a building with every slot occupied by low-priority filler creates a preventable choice: abandon the mission item or discard something you already risked your life to collect. Keep at least one flexible slot when the deployment has a specific target, and discard filler before you reach the objective rather than while enemies are shooting.

Carry an extraction margin

Approach the final leg with enough armor and ammunition to survive contact, plus mobility to reposition if the first route is exposed. Do not plan to arrive at the helicopter with only enough resources for an uncontested walk. Rival Operators and hostile forces can interrupt an exfil, and the official rules do not promise that any marked extraction location will be safe.

Backpack capacity and loot triage

The current 2026 FOB guide lists the Basic Pack as having eight available slots (Call of Duty Staff, 2026). Upgraded backpacks add item slots, and the guide also describes Secure slots that can protect an item when an exfil fails. Capacity is not just a convenience: every occupied slot can block a mission item, and every extra item can increase the value you stand to lose.

Priority Take or keep when space is limited Why it outranks lower tiers
1 Mission or progression item with a high replacement cost Its loss can force another targeted deployment or delay progression.
2 Ingredient for a known craft, upgrade, or recipe It has a defined future use rather than merely possible sale value.
3 Rare weapon or gear piece that improves the next deployment It can change your starting capability after a successful extraction.
4 Cash or saleable valuables tied to a stated objective They matter when they advance a specific target; otherwise they are replaceable.
5 Low-value filler Keep it only after higher-priority categories are covered.

Resources versus 3D Printer Ingredients

The current guide distinguishes automatically broken-down Resources from intact 3D Printer Ingredients. Ingredients remain in the Backpack during deployment. After a successful exfil, move them into the Stash, where they can support crafting and FOB upgrades. Do not assume that an item displayed as a resource will behave like an intact ingredient; check the current inventory label and keep the form required by the recipe.

Step-by-step: a reliable extraction routine

  1. Define success before deployment. Write down the mission item, ingredient, weapon, or cash target that makes the run worthwhile. This is your stop condition.
  2. Identify a practical marked exfil. Select a route that leaves enough time for travel and a possible fight. If the point becomes unsafe, keep a second marked location in mind while you can still reach it.
  3. Loot in a deliberate order. Search containers near the objective first, then take mission-critical items, known ingredients, useful equipment, and objective-related valuables before filler.
  4. Keep the Backpack readable. Manually place finds in slots, discard low-priority items when necessary, and avoid carrying several items that serve the same minor purpose.
  5. Confirm the threshold. As soon as the item or progress condition is secured, stop treating the rest of the map as required content.
  6. Start moving before the route is desperate. Travel toward the selected exfil while you still have armor, ammunition, and the ability to detour around contact.
  7. Scout the approach. Watch for hostile forces and rival Operators, use cover, and avoid exposing the helicopter call until you have a defensible position when the area allows it.
  8. Call the extraction helicopter at the marked location. Calling exfil is not the same as completing it; remain alive through the arrival and departure sequence.
  9. Adapt if the point is compromised. Reposition or use another marked exfil while one remains reachable. Do not stay locked into a bad location simply because it was your first choice.
  10. Offload immediately after success. After the deployment ends, move ingredients, weapons, mission items, and other intended keepers into the Stash before launching another run.

How to choose between marked exfil and final exfil

Use a marked exfil when it is practical

Marked exfils are the normal extraction opportunities during a match. A marked location is practical when you can reach it with a survivable route, enough resources for contact, and time to complete the helicopter sequence. The closest marker is not automatically the best choice; an exposed approach or a route through concentrated enemies may carry more risk than a slightly farther alternative.

Treat final exfil as a last opportunity, not a plan

The original tactical overview identifies the final exfil as the last escape opportunity after ordinary exfils are gone. Waiting for it removes your ability to choose among normal locations and concentrates the consequences of a delay. If your threshold is already met, leaving on an available practical exfil is usually safer than holding a full Backpack for a later chance.

When a route becomes exposed

  • Break line of sight and reposition instead of repeating the same approach.
  • Use another marked exfil if it remains reachable with a real margin for travel and combat.
  • Do not spend your last armor or ammunition on optional rooms after the threshold is met.
  • If the only remaining route is the final exfil, preserve mobility and supplies for that single attempt rather than continuing to loot.

Protect one irreplaceable item with a Secure slot

The current FOB guide describes upgraded backpacks with Secure slots that insure a protected item if you fail to exfil. Availability and behavior depend on the current release, backpack upgrade, and slot rules, so verify the item is actually in the Secure slot rather than merely somewhere in the ordinary Backpack.

What belongs in the slot

Use the slot for the item hardest to replace: a rare mission component, an unusually scarce ingredient, or a key piece of progression. Do not treat it as permission to stay longer. The slot limits the loss from a failed extraction; it does not preserve every other item, prevent a death, or make a contested exfil safe.

How to use the protection intelligently

  1. Identify the single item whose replacement would cost the most time or repeated searching.
  2. Place that item in the Secure slot as soon as the current interface permits it.
  3. Continue to pursue the exit threshold, but keep the same extraction discipline as if the item were unprotected.
  4. After a successful exfil, confirm the item and any newly recovered materials are in the Stash before redeploying.

Risk management in a PvPvE extraction

DMZ combines hostile AI forces with rival Operators. Either can interrupt a route, and a fight can attract the other. The product description frames the central tradeoff plainly: deeper runs can produce greater rewards, but staying too long, pushing too far, or failing to get out can lose the gear and resources secured during the deployment.

Recognize the “one more room” trap

Once your Backpack contains the item that justified the deployment, another container offers uncertain upside while death threatens the entire unprotected haul. The decision is not whether that room might contain something good; it is whether its expected value exceeds the risk of losing what you already have. If the answer is unclear, begin the exfil route.

Separate optional fights from necessary fights

  • Necessary: an enemy blocks the only practical route, the objective requires clearing a location, or the exfil cannot be reached without engagement.
  • Optional: a squad is guarding an unrelated building, a container is off-route, or a weapon is merely interesting after your threshold is met.

Avoiding an optional fight preserves armor, ammunition, time, and concealment for the extraction itself. If contact is unavoidable, reposition rather than repeatedly peeking the same angle, and leave as soon as the path opens.

Quick loot runs versus deep objective runs

Neither approach is universally superior. Select the run type that matches the value of the item you need and the cost of losing your current kit.

Decision axis Quick loot run Deep objective run
Primary purpose Secure one item, modest cash target, or nearby ingredient. Complete a distant mission, gather several objectives, or pursue a high-value haul.
Expected loot value Limited to what can be collected and extracted with a short route. Potentially higher because more locations are visited, but the value is not guaranteed.
Distance and time to exfil Shorter and easier to abandon when conditions change. Longer, with more opportunities for a route to become exposed or unavailable.
PvE/PvP exposure Fewer engagements if you avoid unrelated buildings and travel directly. Higher because travel, objective sites, and extra searches create more contact.
Backpack pressure Lower; reserve space for a defined target. Higher; triage is essential as the pack fills.
Secure-slot value Useful for one rare target, but not a reason to extend the run. Especially valuable when a single mission item is difficult to replace, while the rest of the haul remains at risk.
Cost of failure Usually limited to the equipment and smaller haul carried in. Can include all nonpermanent contents collected during the longer deployment.

Choose a deep run only when the additional objective value matters enough to justify the longer exposure. If your real goal is one ingredient, a short targeted deployment normally gives you more attempts at that goal because each successful extraction resets your inventory safely.

What to do immediately after a successful exfil

Extraction is not the end of inventory management. The current FOB guide explicitly advises offloading items needed in future deployments every time you extract. Open the post-deployment inventory, identify what you intend to keep, and move it into the Stash before starting the next deployment.

  • Move intact 3D Printer Ingredients into the Stash for crafting or FOB upgrades.
  • Store mission and progression items instead of leaving them in a temporary Backpack state.
  • Retain a recovered weapon or gear piece only if it serves your next deployment plan.
  • Review cash and valuables against the objective that justified carrying them.
  • Discard or sell unneeded filler before the next deployment so the next target has room.

This step prevents a common avoidable mistake: extracting successfully, launching another deployment while items remain unsorted, and then risking the items that should already have been secured in persistent storage.

Failure modes and recovery decisions

You found the item but have no free slot

Compare the item against the triage order. Drop low-value filler first, then duplicate minor equipment. Do not discard a mission-critical or known crafting item merely because it was picked up later. If every current item is important, leave the area and extract before attempting another search; returning with a planned empty slot is safer than improvising under fire.

Your chosen exfil is contested

Stop approaching the same angle. Break contact, use cover, and evaluate another marked exfil while it remains available. If the alternative requires crossing a dangerous area with no margin, the original point may still be preferable after a reposition. The key is to make the choice while you still have time and supplies, not after both are exhausted.

You are carrying valuable loot but have weak equipment

Switch from acquisition to preservation. Avoid optional fights, take the route with the least exposure, and do not enter another building solely for a possible upgrade. A stronger item found moments before exfil is worthless if the search costs the haul you already secured.

You die before extraction

Under the original single-life rule, nonpermanent items in the Backpack are lost on death. In the current system, a correctly used Secure slot may preserve its protected item, but it does not preserve ordinary Backpack contents. Rebuild by setting a smaller next objective, leaving earlier, and placing the hardest-to-replace item in Secure storage when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You reach the final exfil with a full pack

Stop looting entirely. Preserve ammunition, armor, and mobility for the last route. The final exfil is described as the last escape opportunity after ordinary exfils are gone, so another search has no strategic value unless it directly improves your chance of surviving that final attempt.

Worked examples

Example: one rare ingredient

Your deployment objective is a specific 3D Printer Ingredient. You find it early, place it in the Backpack, and still have several empty slots. The correct response is not to fill the pack with every nearby resource. Check that the ingredient is intact, mark a practical exfil, avoid unrelated fights, and leave. Afterward, move it into the Stash so it is available for the intended craft or FOB upgrade.

Example: a tempting weapon after the mission item

You secure the mission item, then see a rare weapon in an adjacent building. If the building is off-route and occupied, the weapon is optional. Entering creates a new fight and delays extraction; losing the mission item would cost more than the weapon might add. Leave unless the weapon is both materially better for your next deployment and obtainable without undermining the existing exit plan.

Example: a contested marked exfil

Your Backpack contains the objective item and several useful valuables. The nearest marked exfil is under fire. Do not continue looting while waiting for conditions to improve. Reposition and compare another marked location against the remaining travel distance and supplies. If no alternative is realistically reachable, use cover and time your approach rather than exposing yourself repeatedly. The decision is about preserving a secured haul, not maximizing the number of containers opened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compact decision checklist

  • What exact item or progress condition makes this deployment successful?
  • Which marked exfil is practical from the objective area?
  • Do I have a free slot for the target, and which filler can be discarded?
  • Is the rarest item in a Secure slot when the current backpack supports one?
  • Have I reached my exit threshold?
  • Can I survive the route with current armor, ammunition, mobility, and time?
  • Is this fight necessary for the route, or merely tempting?
  • If the first exfil is exposed, which alternative remains reachable?
  • After extraction, have I moved intended keepers into the Stash?

The principle that prevents most losses

DMZ rewards completed extraction, not the longest possible looting session. The official product description presents deeper exploration as a greater-reward, greater-loss decision, while the tactical overview makes death a direct loss of nonpermanent Backpack contents. Apply those rules together: define success, secure the hardest-to-replace item, keep the pack organized, leave when the threshold is met, and treat every additional room as a wager against the haul already in hand.
