These steps reduce energy use; they do not restore capacity a battery has already lost. Apple distinguishes “battery life”—time between charges—from “battery lifespan,” the time until the battery needs replacement (Apple’s battery guidance).
First, tell runtime from battery health
If a device runs down quickly, the cause may be a demanding app, bright screen, background activity, or a battery that has lost capacity with age. Settings can curb avoidable drain and improve time between charges, but they cannot reverse chemical aging. Start by checking usage; if the battery remains poor after reasonable settings changes, consult the manufacturer’s battery-health diagnostics and service guidance.
Use this order to find and reduce drain
- Check battery use by app. Look for an app or activity consuming more power than you expect. Avoid changing many settings at once; a specific culprit gives you a more useful next step.
- Reduce display power. Lower brightness and set a shorter screen timeout or display-off period. If available, reduce refresh rate when you do not need a smoother display.
- Turn on the built-in saver when extra runtime matters. Low Power Mode or Battery Saver can limit background tasks and other power use.
- Limit only the background activity you do not need. Restrict apps that use unexpected power, and turn off hotspot, navigation, streaming, or other demanding activities when they are not in use. These features are useful when needed; the trade-off is reduced convenience or access.
- Consider charging optimization separately. A charging limit can support long-term battery health but may leave you with less charge for the day.
There is no universal percentage or number of extra hours these combined changes will deliver. Results depend on the device, battery condition, settings, and how you use it.
iPhone and iPad: use Low Power Mode and check Battery Health
On supported current Apple software, go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode and turn on Low Power Mode. Apple says it reduces power use by changing or limiting features that can include Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and visual effects. The exact controls and labels can vary by device and software version. Lower brightness or use Auto-Brightness as another way to reduce display consumption (Apple: About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch; Apple: Batteries – Maximizing Performance).

To distinguish a high-drain setting from reduced battery capacity, check Battery Health in Settings; its location and available details vary by model. If health information indicates capacity has declined, power-saving settings may help you use the remaining charge more efficiently, but they do not restore the lost capacity.
MacBook: adjust Energy Saver settings for battery use
Apple’s Energy Saver settings manage power use; on battery power, a Mac can dim its display and use components sparingly. A maximum-performance setting can drain the battery faster. The settings panel and options differ across Mac models and macOS versions, so use the power settings available on your Mac rather than assuming every model has the same controls (Apple: Batteries – Maximizing Performance).

For long-term storage—not ordinary daily charging—Apple recommends powering down the MacBook and storing it at about 50% charge. Storing it fully discharged for a long time can leave the battery unable to hold charge; storing it fully charged can cause some capacity loss.
Windows laptops: Battery Saver, display settings, and app usage
Microsoft’s Battery Saver temporarily limits some power-consuming activity, such as automatic email and calendar syncing, live tiles, and apps that are not in active use. Microsoft calls it “the easiest way to extend battery life.” You can also lower brightness and refresh rate, shorten screen and sleep durations, and choose an efficient power mode if your PC offers one. Microsoft also reports that, in its browsing tests on Windows 10, Microsoft Edge lasted 36–53% longer per charge than Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. The support page does not state the test year. Treat that as Microsoft’s Windows 10 browsing-test result, not a prediction for current browser versions, newer Windows releases, or other workloads.

Pixel phones: check app use and leave adaptive optimization on
On Pixel, open the battery usage view and look for apps consuming more power than expected. Google recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization on. Adaptive Battery limits how less-used apps run in the background, which can reduce performance or delay notifications. Optimization may take a few weeks to settle after setup or a factory reset; Google also says extra drain for a few days after a software update can be normal (Google Pixel Help: Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery; Google Pixel Help: Fix battery drain problems on a Pixel phone).
Turn off the hotspot or other power-intensive features when you are not using them. These are Pixel-specific instructions; other Android phones may use different menu names and controls.

Choose an 80% charge limit only if it fits your day
On Pixel 6a and later, Google offers an 80% charging limit and Adaptive Charging. Adaptive Charging learns charging habits and finishes charging closer to the usual unplug time. The 80% limit prioritizes battery lifespan over the maximum charge available for a particular day, so it may suit people who usually end the day with charge left. Turn it off when you need the phone’s full runtime. Google says the phone needs a full charge every tenth cycle to keep capacity readings accurate (Google Pixel Help: Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery).
This is an optional lifespan measure, not a way to make the next charge last longer. Other devices may offer their own charging optimizations; availability and behavior vary by model.
Keep heat in check and know when settings are not enough
A hot Pixel battery drains faster, and Google warns that heat can damage it. Avoid unnecessary heat and keep the device within ordinary operating conditions; do not rely on a power setting to undo heat-related wear (Google Pixel Help: Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery).
Lithium-ion batteries are consumable, and their capacity declines over time. If drain persists after checking apps and settings—or the device’s health diagnostics indicate a problem—use the manufacturer’s model-specific support and service information. A setting change can reduce avoidable consumption, but it cannot replace lost battery capacity (Google Pixel Help: Get the most life from your Pixel phone battery; Google Pixel Help: Fix battery drain problems on a Pixel phone).
