To find what is draining your iPhone, open Settings > Battery and compare battery use with app and system activity. Then target the likely cause—such as background work, weak cellular coverage, frequent notifications, or display settings—instead of changing settings at random. Low Power Mode can conserve power temporarily; Battery Health can help identify when service may be needed.

Find the cause in Settings > Battery

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Review any suggestions or Insights shown above Daily Usage.
  3. Compare the Daily Usage chart with your recent usage. On iOS 26, Apple describes a view comparing the current day with the previous seven days; select a day to inspect its app and system activity.
  4. Check App and System Activity Usage and open an app’s details. Look at activity duration and whether it occurred on screen or in the background, as well as any displayed indicators for cellular coverage or notifications.

A large share of battery use does not, on its own, mean an app is faulty. Consider whether the app’s activity matches what you did—for example, watching video, navigating, or uploading photos.

Match the battery clues to a targeted change

Background Activity

Directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching can continue to use power when an app is not on screen. If the same app repeatedly shows substantial background activity that you do not need, adjust its background behavior or reduce your use of that feature.

No Mobile Coverage, Low Signal, or Cellular Coverage

Searching for a signal or using an iPhone where reception is poor can affect battery life. When practical, use the phone where coverage is stronger. If you know you will be somewhere without coverage for a while, Airplane Mode is an option, though it disables wireless connections until you turn them back on.

Notifications

Notifications can wake the device. Reduce or turn off alerts for apps that do not need to notify you frequently.

Ongoing iOS Update or Ongoing Device Setup

Update and setup tasks can temporarily increase background work and affect battery life or thermal performance. If the drain began after an update, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking battery use again.

Screen use and brightness

If Battery settings suggests high brightness, disabled Auto-Lock, or disabled Auto-Brightness, follow the suggestion if it fits how you use your phone. Lowering brightness and allowing the display to lock when idle can reduce power use.

Use Low Power Mode when you need to conserve charge

Low Power Mode reduces power use by changing or pausing selected features. Depending on the iPhone, effects can include reduced display brightness, a 30-second Auto-Lock, limiting supported ProMotion displays to 60 Hz, temporarily pausing iCloud Photos, disabling automatic downloads, Mail fetch, and Background App Refresh, or changing 5G behavior. The exact effects are not identical on every model. Apple says Low Power Mode turns off when the iPhone is charged to 80% or higher.

iPhone model Settings path
iPhone 14 or earlier Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode
iPhone 15 or later Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode

You can also add Low Power Mode to Control Center for quicker access. Because the mode limits selected behavior, use it when conserving charge matters more than having every supported background or display feature active.

Check whether Adaptive Power is available

Adaptive Power requires iOS 26 or later and is supported on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple says it can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%. It does not manage performance during activities that require maximum performance, such as camera use or gaming with Game Mode.

Defaults and software can change, so check Settings > Battery > Power Mode on your device.

Check Battery Health when drain persists

Daily battery usage shows what used power; Battery Health is a separate view of the battery itself. Find it at Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later, or Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier. iPhone 15 and later can also show cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date.

If the screen reports Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement. Apple says an iPhone battery should be serviced or recycled by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Any replacement battery must match the exact iPhone model; an unspecified marketplace part is not established as Apple-approved or compatible.

A practical order for troubleshooting

  1. Use Settings > Battery to identify the day and app or system activity associated with the drain.
  2. Choose a change that matches the clue: limit unnecessary background activity or notifications, address weak-signal conditions, or adjust display behavior.
  3. If you need to stretch the remaining charge, turn on Low Power Mode using the path for your iPhone generation.
  4. If the drain followed an update or setup, allow a few days for background work to settle, then review usage again.
  5. If Battery Health shows Service, consider model-compatible replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Apple’s support article puts battery life plainly: “Battery life is the amount of time that your device works before it needs to be recharged.” No single setting change guarantees a particular number of extra hours; the useful first step is to connect the Battery screen’s activity clues to what the phone is actually doing.
