To make a Samsung Galaxy Tab last longer between charges, first check Settings → Battery (or the closest equivalent) to find what is using power. Then update apps, limit unnecessary background activity, and adjust Power saving, display, and connectivity settings to suit how you use the tablet. Menu names and available features vary by model, software, carrier, and region.
Find what is draining the battery
Open Settings → Battery and review battery usage. On some tablets, the relevant controls are under Settings → Device care → Battery. Look for apps with unexpectedly high use, especially ones you rarely open. Samsung documents both routes, but the exact screen depends on the device and software. See Samsung’s battery-drain troubleshooting guide and Galaxy battery optimization guidance.
If the tablet is new or has just been set up, battery use may be higher for the first few days while apps and services optimize, according to Samsung UK Support. Check usage again after that initial period before deciding a particular setting or app is responsible.
Reduce unnecessary background activity
Update apps and software
Install available app and system updates. Updates can address app behavior that contributes to drain; Samsung includes updating among its recommended troubleshooting steps. Use your tablet’s available software-update screen and the app store from which you install apps.

Put infrequently used apps to sleep
Where supported, use the battery or Device care controls to put apps you seldom use to sleep. Deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and generally work only when you open them. This can reduce background activity, but it also means an app may not refresh or alert you until then.
Do not put essential messaging, alarm, synchronization, or security apps to sleep unless you are willing to miss or delay notifications, updates, or other background functions. You can also review individual apps’ notifications and background activity, and disable only what you do not need.
Choose a Power saving mode for the situation
Power saving is useful when runtime matters more than full performance—for example, while traveling or during a long reading session. Samsung says the mode can restrict background data and other features, which may affect performance, app updates, notifications, and sometimes location. After turning it on, check that your essential apps still behave as expected. Samsung explains these trade-offs in its battery guidance.
On supported tablet software, Samsung Philippines describes four modes. The names and availability are not universal, and the modes do not come with a published, measured runtime gain.
| Mode | How to think about it | Availability and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Optimized | Balances performance and battery use for everyday use. | Listed in Samsung Philippines’ tablet guide; availability depends on model and software. |
| Medium | Reduces some performance or background demands to extend use. | Listed in Samsung Philippines’ tablet guide; check essential notifications and functions after enabling. |
| Maximum | Prioritizes battery conservation over fuller functionality. | Listed in Samsung Philippines’ tablet guide; restrictions can be more noticeable. |
| Adaptive | Adjusts power behavior based on use, where offered. | Listed in Samsung Philippines’ tablet guide; not available on every Galaxy Tab or software version. |
Samsung Philippines gives the path Settings → Device care → Battery → Power mode for the tablets covered by its Power Saving modes guide. Current US support material may instead place controls under Settings → Battery. If neither path matches, search Settings for “Battery” or consult support for your model.

Lower display and connectivity demands when useful
- Brightness: Lower the screen brightness when a bright display is unnecessary. Adaptive brightness can adjust brightness to your surroundings; Samsung includes it among its battery-saving recommendations.
- Connections: Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or location services when you are not using them. Keep what you need; switching everything off can interfere with navigation, accessories, or network access.
- Weak signal: A poor network connection can contribute to faster drain. If the tablet is struggling to maintain a connection, use a stable Wi-Fi network when practical or avoid tasks that require a constant weak mobile signal.
- Syncing: Review accounts and apps that sync continuously, and reduce or disable syncing only where delayed updates are acceptable.
These are situational adjustments, not guaranteed fixed gains. Samsung’s support advice identifies display, connections, syncing, and weak signal as relevant factors, but does not quantify extra hours for individual changes. See Samsung’s battery recommendations and Samsung UK’s troubleshooting guidance.
Know when settings cannot solve the problem
Battery capacity declines over time with repeated charging and discharging. Samsung UK Support states: “The battery is a consumable component. With repeated charging and discharging, its capacity will gradually decrease, and the reduced capacity cannot be restored.” If runtime remains poor after checking battery usage and reducing avoidable activity, the battery may have worn capacity; contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider for diagnosis.
Some battery-protection options are also model- and software-specific. For example, Samsung’s update notice for the SM-X516B describes a Battery protection charge limit adjustable from 80% to 95%. That notice does not establish the same option or limit for every Galaxy Tab. Consult the support information for your model rather than assuming a universal setting.
When you need more time away from an outlet
A compatible USB-C power bank can provide access to charging when no wall outlet is available. It does not increase the tablet’s battery capacity or reduce its power consumption; confirm compatibility with your specific Galaxy Tab and charging requirements before buying one.
