For a stable, shareable copy, export the note as a PDF. On a Mac, use File > Export as > PDF; on iPhone or iPad, use Share > Markup and save the PDF. To print directly, choose File > Print on Mac or Share > Print on iPhone or iPad. No format is guaranteed to preserve every Notes feature exactly, so check the result—especially if the note contains attachments or interactive items.
Choose a format based on what you need to keep
| Option | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| A stable, page-like copy to share or retain | On iPhone and iPad, an exported PDF includes only the first page of an embedded multipage PDF or scanned document. Apple does not guarantee that every Notes feature will reproduce identically. | |
| Markdown | Reusing text in a Markdown-compatible workflow | Markdown is text-oriented; it is not a promise that the original page layout will be reproduced. |
| A physical copy | Printer and pagination options depend on the device. Review the print preview and output for layout or attachment issues. | |
| Open in Pages | Continuing to edit a note in a word processor | Some Notes-specific content and behavior do not carry over; see the limitations below. |
Apple documents exporting, printing, and opening notes in Pages, but does not provide a universal guarantee of lossless formatting across these routes. For a visual record, PDF is usually the most practical choice; for editable text, use Markdown where your destination supports it.
Export or print a note on Mac
Apple’s current Mac Notes guide documents these actions for an individual note. Select the note before choosing an option:
- Export as PDF: In Notes, select the note and choose File > Export as > PDF, then choose where to save it.
- Export as Markdown: Select the note and choose File > Export as > Markdown, then save the file.
- Print: Select the note and choose File > Print, then set the available print options.

Export or print a note on iPhone or iPad
Save a PDF
- Open the note.
- Tap Share > Markup. If Markup is not shown, tap View More and look for it there.
- Save the PDF using the available save or share options.
Apple says the PDF uses the note’s current view settings for attachments. However, if the note contains a multipage PDF or scanned document, the exported note PDF includes only the first page of that embedded item. Export the attachment separately if you need its full contents.
Export Markdown
- Open the note and tap Share > Export as Markdown.
- If the option is not visible, check View More.
- Choose where to send or save the Markdown file.
Apple describes this option for workflows that support Markdown; it does not promise a layout-identical copy.

Apple’s iPhone guide to exporting or printing notes documents these routes.
What happens to attachments, checklists, and links?
Exporting or handing a note to another app can change how Notes-specific content behaves. Apple’s documented caveats are specific to particular routes:

- PDF on iPhone or iPad: Embedded multipage PDFs and scans are represented only by their first page in the exported note PDF. Apple also says attachment display follows the note’s current view settings.
- Open in Pages: Drawings cannot be edited in Pages. Scanned documents and PDFs appear as thumbnail images. Tags, mentions, checklists, and links to notes are not active items. A Pages document created from a shared note is not itself shared.
These limitations are a reason not to treat Pages as a lossless archive. Before relying on an export, inspect the saved file for attachments, tables, lists, drawings, and interactive elements; the documented caveats do not establish that every such element is always lost.
Can Markdown preserve Apple Notes formatting?
Markdown export is useful when you want text for a compatible Markdown editor or publishing workflow, not when the requirement is to reproduce the note’s exact visual page layout. Apple’s statement that Notes converts Markdown syntax to rich text that maintains formatting applies to importing Markdown into Notes on macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and later. It is not a guarantee of a lossless round trip from Notes back to Markdown.

Apple lists TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML, ENEX, and MD among Mac import types, and notes that unsupported Evernote features or attachments are not imported. See Apple’s Notes import and sharing guidance for those import details.

- Open the saved PDF or Pages file and compare it with the original note.
- Check that attachments show the pages or details you need; on iPhone and iPad, export a multipage scan or PDF separately when the note PDF contains only its first page.
- Review tables, lists, drawings, and interactive elements if they matter to the recipient or your archive.
- For printouts, check pagination and printer options in the preview.
Apple’s guides describe exporting and printing individual notes. They do not establish an official batch-export workflow for exporting an entire Notes library as PDFs or Markdown files.
